- said forces being larger than the force of gravity and wherein said predetermined distance is within the range 0.5 to 0.8 of the radius of said semi-spherical lower body portion.
- 4. A prefilter for filtering particulates from a body of fluid, said prefilter comprising:
- a housing having a truncated semi-spherical surface;
- a filter screen affixed to an upper surface of said housing and sized to prevent particles greater than 100 microns from entering said housing when said prefilter is immersed in said body of fluid;
- outlet means affixed to said upper surface for enabling fluid to exit said housing of said prefilter;
- means connected to said prefilter for maintaining said prefilter below the surface of said body of fluid; and
- means connected to said prefilter for maintaining said prefilter in a position so that said filter screen is substantially horizontal when said body of fluid is not moving and for maintaining said prefilter in a position so that said filter screen is tilted from a horizontal position when said body of fluid is moving and is held under the surface of the moving fluid by the hydraulic forces caused by said tilted position and the forces caused by the flow of fluid around said semi-spherical surface.
- 5. The prefilter of claim 4 wherein said means for maintaining said prefilter below said surface includes:
- means on said prefilter having a specific gravity greater than about 0.07 pounds per cubic inch;
- wherein said means for maintaining said prefilter when said body of fluid is moving includes:
- said outlet means being positioned a predetermined distance from the center of gravity of said prefilter and further defining means for creating a moment on said prefilter in moving fluid to tilt said prefilter so that said filter screen is angled upstream so that the hydraulic forces on said semi-spherical surface and on said filter screen hold the prefilter under the surface of the moving fluid;
- said forces being larger than the gravity force; and
- wherein said predetermined distance is within the range of about one-half the radius of said semi-spherical shaped housing and about eight-tenths of said radius.
- 6. A prefilter for filtering particulates from a body of fluid, said prefilter comprising:
- a hollow member having a lower body portion and an upwardly facing top portion;
- filter screen inlet means comprising at least a portion of said upwardly facing top portion for enabling fluid to enter the interior of said hollow member when said prefilter is immersed in said body of fluid;
- said filter screen inlet means being effective for preventing fluid particles greater than 100 microns from passing through said filter screen inlet means and entering said interior of said hollow member;
- outlet means affixed to said top portion for enabling fluid in said interior of said hollow member to exit said prefilter when said outlet means is connected to an inlet of a pump; and
- means connected to said prefilter for maintaining said hollow member in said body of fluid so that said filter screen inlet means is tilted from a horizontal position when said body of fluid is moving.
- 7. The prefilter of claim 6 wherein said lower body portion comprises a truncated semi-spherical lower body portion and wherein said forces are larger than the force of gravity and wherein said predetermined distance is within the range of 0.5 to 0.8 of the radius of said truncated semi-spherical lower body portion.
- 8. The prefilter of claim 1 wherein said prefilter is held beneath the surface of said moving fluid by the hydraulic forces caused by said tilted filter screen inlet means and the forces caused by the flow of fluid around said lower body portion.
- 9. The prefilter of claim 8 wherein said means for maintaining said hollow member when said body of fluid is moving includes:
- said outlet means positioned a predetermined distance from the center of gravity of said prefilter and further defining means for creating a moment on said prefilter in moving fluid to tilt said prefilter wherein said filter screen inlet means faces upstream so that the hydraulic forces on said lower body portion and on said filter screen inlet means hold said prefilter under the surface of the said moving fluid.
- 10. The prefilter of claim 6 wherein said prefilter further includes means connected to said prefilter for maintaining said hollow member below the surface of a body of fluid so that the top surface of said filter screen inlet means faces substantially upwards when said body of fluid is not moving.
- 11. The prefilter of claim 10 wherein said means for maintaining said prefilter below said surface includes:
- means on said prefilter having a specific gravity greater than about 0.07 pounds per cubic inch.
