Claims
- 1. A heat exchanger for use within a rotary kiln that includes a cylindrical steel shell with an internal refractory lining, said heat exchanger comprising a first, preformed configuration and a second, installed configuration, said heat exchanger, in the first, preformed configuration, comprising at least three loose, refractory legs, each one of the legs comprising: a foot, a mating end opposing the foot, and a body extending between the foot and the mating end, each one of the legs is continuous and between the foot and the mating surface, thereby forming a single-leg unit, and said heat exchanger, in the second, installed configuration that is formed within the kiln from the loose legs, having each one of the continuous, single-leg units assembled into a spoke-like configuration wherein each one of the legs extends substantially radially outwardly from a center thereof to proximate the shell, and metallic retainers coupling the mating ends of the leg to the shell.
- 2. The heat exchanger of claim 1 further comprising an interim configuration in which only a first one and a second one of the legs are installed in the kiln as single-leg units, the first leg being disposed at approximately the four o'clock position and the second leg being disposed at approximately the eight o'clock position, wherein the interim configuration is employed for inserting a third leg as a single-leg unit.
- 3. The heat exchanger of claim 2 wherein the mating ends of the first and second legs are mutually supporting.
- 4. The heat exchanger of claim 3 wherein the metallic retainer is a steel angle.
- 5. The heat exchanger of claim 1 wherein at least one of the mating ends adjoins adjacent ones of the mating ends.
- 6. The heat exchanger of claim 5 wherein each one of the mating ends are disposed proximate other ones of the mating ends at the center.
- 7. The heat exchanger of claim 1 wherein each one of the single-leg units has a length approximately equal to a radius of the kiln.
