Claims
- 1. A premises gateway for connecting network devices and host systems on a network to subscriber premises devices, comprising:
a central processing device; a bus; and a plurality of network interface devices configured to establish a connection between at least one of said network devices and said host systems to a selected one of said subscriber premises devices via said premises gateway, each of said plurality of network interface devices being configured to receive inbound signals generated by said at least one of said network devices and said host systems and transmitted on a first communication link selected from the group consisting of a twisted pair wire link, a fiber optic link, a coaxial cable link, a hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable link, and a wireless communication link, to process said signals for transmission on said bus, and to receive outbound signals generated by said subscriber premises devices via said bus, each of said plurality of network interface devices comprising a switching device for suppressing the transmission of said inbound signals to said bus; wherein said central processing device is operable to control routing of said inbound signals and said outbound signals on said bus, and to command when each of said plurality of network interface devices opens or closes their corresponding said switching device; wherein a first one of said plurality of network interface devices is connected directly to a central office switch and a second one of said plurality of network interface devices is connected to a data network, said central processing device being operable to determine if said outbound signals comprise a voice call or a data call, to operate said first one of said plurality of network interface devices to direct a voice call to said central office switch, and to operate said second one of said plurality of network interface devices to direct a data call to said data network connected thereto.
- 2. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a plurality of subscriber premises interface devices which are each configured to receive said outbound signals generated by said at least one of said subscriber premises devices and transmitted on a second communication link selected from the group consisting of a twisted pair wire link, a fiber optic link, a coaxial cable link, a hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable link, and a wireless communication link, to process said signals for transmission on said bus, and to receive said inbound signals via said bus.
- 3. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 1, wherein Internet protocol conversion is implemented on said data network and said premises gateway operates as an Internet protocol gateway.
- 4. A method of selectively connecting host systems and networks to subscriber premises devices comprising the steps of:
receiving an incoming call from one of said host systems and networks at a network interface device; operating a first switching device on said network interface device to suppress said incoming call from being directed to said subscriber premises devices via a bus; determining from said incoming call for which of a plurality of subscriber premises devices said incoming call is intended; providing said incoming call on said bus; and commanding at least one of a plurality of premises node interfaces connected to respective ones of said subscriber premises devices to operate a second switching device to provide said incoming call from said bus to the corresponding one of said subscriber premises devices connected thereto.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said second switching device in each of said plurality of premises node interfaces is normally open and said commanding step comprises the step of commanding one of said plurality of premises node interfaces corresponding to said subscriber premises device to which said incoming call is intended to close said second switching device thereof to receive said incoming call.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said second switching device in each of said plurality of premises node interfaces is normally closed and said commanding step comprises the step of commanding each of said plurality of premises node interfaces to open said second switching device thereof, except said one of said plurality of premises node interfaces corresponding to said subscriber premises device to which said incoming call is intended in order to receive said incoming call.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein a plurality of said network interface devices are provided for processing an outgoing call from one of said subscriber premises devices to one of said host systems and networks, further comprising the steps of:
receiving an outgoing call from one of said subscriber premises devices; operating said second switching device on said subscriber premises device to suppress said outgoing call from being directed to said plurality of network interface devices via said bus; determining from said outgoing call to which of said plurality of network interface devices said outgoing call is intended, said plurality of network interface devices being configured to process said outgoing call for transmission to one of said host systems and networks on a communication link selected from the group consisting of a twisted pair wire link, a fiber optic link, a coaxial cable link, a hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable link, and a wireless link communication link; providing said outgoing call on said bus; and commanding at least one of said plurality of network node interface devices to operate the first switching device corresponding thereto to provide said outgoing call from said bus to the corresponding one of said plurality of network interface devices to which said outgoing call is intended.
- 8. A method as claimed in claim 7, wherein said outgoing call comprises a voice call transmitted on a first communication link transporting at least one digital subscriber line-formatted data signal, said determining step for said outgoing call comprising the step of determining to which of said plurality of network interface devices to transmit said voice call and said digital subscriber line-formatted data signal.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said determining step comprises the step of selecting a node corresponding to one of caller identification data and distinctive ringing provided with said incoming call, said node having at least one of said subscriber premises devices connected thereto, and said commanding step comprises the step of sending a command signal to said node.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein said selecting step comprises the step of performing a look-up operation in a data storage device having stored data comprising each of said nodes and at least one of caller identification data and distinctive ringing for communicating with said subscriber premises devices connected to respective said nodes.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 4, further comprising the steps of:
determining if an outgoing call from one of said subscriber premises equipment is intended for one of said host systems and network and one of said plurality of premises interface devices; sending said outgoing call to one of said host systems and networks or another one of said plurality of premises interface devices if said outgoing call is an analog signal; processing said outgoing call at said one of said plurality of premises interface devices as a message and not sending said outgoing call to one of said host systems and networks and another one of said plurality of premises interface devices if said outgoing call is a digital signal and a message; and sending said outgoing call to one of said host systems and networks and another one of said plurality of premises interface devices via said bus if said outgoing call is a digital signal and not a message.
- 12. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said incoming call comprises a voice call transmitted on a first communication link transporting at least one digital subscriber line-formatted data signal, said determining step for said incoming call comprising the step of determining to which of said subscriber premises devices to transmit said voice call and said digital subscriber line-formatted data signal.
- 13. A method of selectively connecting host systems and networks to subscriber premises equipment comprising the steps of:
receiving an incoming call from a subscribers' premises; suppressing said incoming call from being directed to one of a plurality subscriber premises devices and a plurality of network interface devices; determining if said incoming call is one of a voice call and a data call; operating a first one of said plurality of network interface devices connected to a central office switch to provide said incoming call to said central office switch if said incoming call is a voice call; and operating a second one of said plurality of network interface devices connected to a data network to provide said incoming call to said data network if said incoming call is a data call, said data network having Internet protocol conversion thereon to provide an Internet gateway for said subscriber's premises.
- 14. A premises gateway for connecting network devices and host systems on a network to subscriber premises devices, comprising:
a central processing device; a bus; and a plurality of network interface devices configured to establish a connection between at least one of said network devices and said host systems to a selected one of said subscriber premises devices via said premises gateway, each of said plurality of network interface devices being configured to receive inbound signals generated by said at least one of said network devices and said host systems and transmitted on a first communication link selected from the group consisting of a twisted pair wire link, a fiber optic link, a coaxial cable link, a hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable link, and a wireless communication link, to process said signals for transmission on said bus, and to receive outbound signals generated by said subscriber premises devices via said bus, each of said plurality of network interface devices comprising a switching device for suppressing the transmission of said inbound signals to said bus; wherein said central processing device is operable to control routing of said inbound signals and said outbound signals on said bus, and to command when each of said plurality of network interface devices opens or closes their corresponding said switching device, at least one of said network interface devices being operable to receive at least one digital subscriber line-formatted data signal via said first communication link carrying a voice call, said central processing device being operable to determine to which of said subscriber premises devices to transmit said voice call and said at least one digital subscriber line-formatted data signal.
- 15. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 14, wherein said first communication link carrying said voice call is a twisted pair wire link.
- 16. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 14, further comprising a plurality of premises node interfaces which are each configured to receive said outbound signals generated by said at least one of said subscriber premises devices and transmitted on a second communication link selected from the group consisting of a twisted pair wire link, a fiber optic link, a coaxial cable link, a hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable link, and a wireless communication link, to process said signals for transmission on said bus, and to receive said inbound signals via said bus.
- 17. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 16, wherein said premises node interfaces comprise a second switching device for suppressing the transmission of said inbound signals to said subscriber premises devices connected thereto, said central processing device being operable to control routing of said inbound signals and said outbound signals on said bus, and to command when each of said plurality of network interface devices and said premises node interfaces opens or closes their corresponding said switching device and said second switching device.
- 18. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 17, wherein at least one of said subscriber premises devices generates at least one digital subscriber line-formatted data signal that is transmitted via said second communication link carrying a voice call to one of said premises node interfaces, said central processing device being operable to determine to which of said network interface devices to transmit said voice call and said at least one digital subscriber line-formatted data signal via said bus.
- 19. A premises gateway as claimed in claim 18, wherein said second communication link is a twisted pair wire link.
