A process for preparing 1-(3,3-dimethyl-2-norbornyl)-2-propanone comprising the step of intimately admixing camphene, acetaldehyde, and a 1,2-diketone photochemical hydrogen abstractor; then simultaneously irradiating the reaction mixture with ultraviolet light and adding additional quantities of said, 1,2-diketone photochemical hydrogen abstractor; and isolating said 1-(3,3-dimethyl-2-norbornyl)-2-propanone from the reaction mass.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the 1,2-diketone photochemical hydrogen abstractor is diacetyl.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the reaction time is about 55 hours and the reaction is carried out at ambient temperature and pressure.
