Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a 2,2-disubstituted 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran of the formula Ia ##STR25## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, independently of one another, are C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, and
- n is 0 or 1, which comprises rearranging a phenol ester of the formula IIIa ##STR26## by means of a Fries shift in the presence of a Lewis acid, subsequently reducing the resultant 2-acylphenol of the formula IVa ##STR27## and cyclicizing the resultant 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol of the formula IIa ##STR28## to give the 2,2-disubstituted 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran Ia wherein the cyclization of the 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol of the formula IIa is carried out in an inert organic solvent in the presence of an acidic ion exchanger resin and in the presence of an inert inorganic desiccant.
