Claims
- 1. A reaction medium comprising
- (a) iodine from an alkali metal iodide,
- (b) copper having an average oxidation state between 1 and 2,
- (c) a solubilizing agent for cuprous ion which is soluble in water and forms a water-soluble complex with cuprous ion, and
- (d) at least 20 moles per liter of water, the medium having a pH value of less than about 2.
- 2. The medium of claim 1 wherein the solubilizing agent is an alkali metal chloride, an alkaline earth metal chloride, or ammonium chloride.
- 3. The medium of claim 2 wherein the solubilizing agent is sodium chloride, calcium chloride or ammonium chloride.
- 4. The medium of claim 1 wherein the iodine is from sodium iodide or potassium iodide.
- 5. The medium of claim 1 wherein the copper is from cuprous chloride and cupric chloride.
- 6. A reaction medium comprising
- (a) 1.times.10.sup.-12 -0.5 gram mole per liter of iodine from sodium iodide or potassium iodide,
