Claims
- 1. The process of preparing a polymer of a number average molecular weight of 500-10,000 which comprises reacting
- at least one isocyanatoalkyl acrylate or methacrylate alone or with
- at least one comonomer of the group consisting of alkyl acrylates and methacrylates; styrene; ethylene, vinyl acetate; and vinyl chloride
- in an organic solvent and in the substantial absence of water and Lewis-type bases and
- in the presence of
- (1) a mercaptan chain-transfer agent of the formula R-S-H wherein R is of at least 4 carbons and is alkyl, aryl or ##STR5## R.sub.3 being alkyl or aryl and n being an integer from 0 to 8, and (2) an organic polymerization initiator,
- the mole ratio chain-transfer agent/initiator being from 1/10 to 10/1 and the temperature being sufficient to decompose the initiator but insufficient to favor the production of a thiourethane.
- 2. The process of claim 1 accomplished at reflux.
- 3. The process of claim 1 accomplished continuously.
- 4. The process of claim 1 accomplished continuously at reflux.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the chain-transfer agent constitutes 1-20% by weight of the resultant polymer.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the chain-transfer agent is lauryl mercaptan.
- 7. The process of claim 5 wherein the chain-transfer agent is t-dodecyl mercaptan.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the polymerization initiator is a peroxide or an azo compound.
- 9. The process of claim 1 in which the solvent is at least one member of the group consisting of xylene, toluene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, cyclohexane, heptane, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ether esters and N-methyl pyrrolidone.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein the alkyl group of any isocyanatoalkyl acrylate or methacrylate has up to 8 carbons.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein the acrylate or methacrylate is isocyanatoethyl acrylate or methacrylate.
- 12. The process of claim 11 employing at least one polymerizable comonomer of the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, butyl, hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl and lauryl acrylates and methacrylates, styrene, ethylene, vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride.
- 13. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate and mercaptan.
- 14. The process of claim 13 wherein the weight ratio isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate/mercaptan is 45.9/22.9/19.4/11.8.
- 15. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, styrene and mercaptan.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein the weight ratio isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/styrene/mercaptan is 45.9/42.6/10.7.
- 17. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and mercaptan.
- 18. The process of claim 17 wherein the weight ratio of isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/mercaptan is 45.5/41.6/12.8.
- 19. The process of claim 17 wherein the isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/mercaptan weight ratio is 45.7/45.5/6.7.
- 20. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate and mercaptan.
- 21. The process of claim 20 wherein the weight ratio isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/ethylhexyl acrylate/mercaptan is 45.2/41.9/12.8.
- 22. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate and mercaptan.
- 23. The process of claim 22 wherein the weight ratio isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate/mercaptan is 28.1/57.6/9.7/2.1.
- 24. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate and mercaptan.
- 25. The process of claim 24 wherein the weight ratio isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate/lauryl methacrylate/mercaptan is 30/60/10/2.1.
- 26. The process of claim 12 employing the monomers isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, styrene and mercaptan.
- 27. The process of claim 26 wherein the weight ratio isocyanatoethyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/styrene/mercaptan is 53.27/19.6/19.1/7.04.
- 28. The process of claim 1 or claim 12 wherein the spent reaction mixture is held at an elevated temperature for a protracted period to reduce residual monomeric isocyanate.

This application is a division of our copending application Ser. No. 195,081, filed Oct. 8, 1980, as a continuation-in-part of our now abandoned but then-copending application, Ser. No. 053,301, filed June 29, 1979, as a division of our then-copending application, Ser. No. 819,121, filed July 26, 1977, but now also abandoned. All three of these earlier applications are specifically incorporated by reference herein. Ser. No. 195,081 issued as U.S. Pat. No. 4,351,755 on Sept. 28, 1982.
