Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of para-xylene by the methylation of toluene which comprises using as the catalyst, a catalyst obtained by mixing colloidal silica aquasol formed from an aqueous mixture obtained by combining an alkali metal aluminate with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, with a template compound, followed by formation of a solid crystalline product, and eventual activation of the crystalline product by heating.
- 2. The process of claim 1 in which the materials fed to the process are toluene, methanol, and water.
- 3. The process of claim 2 in which the reaction is conducted at about 480.degree. C. and at a weight hour space velocity high enough to limit the methanol conversion to less than 70%.
- 4. The process of claim 3 in which the mole ratio of toluene to methanol is about 10 to 1, and in which the mole ratio of water to hydrocarbon in the feed is about 1.
- 5. The process of claim 1 in which the alkali metal aluminate is sodium aluminate trihydrate.
- 6. The process of claim 1 in which the catalyst has an alumina content in the range of 700 to 5000 parts per million.
