Claims
- 1. A process of producing a polyvinylazide optionally containing nitrate groups, which comprises reacting a polyvinylnitrate with a metal azide in the presence of an inert organic solvent for at least one of the metal azide and polyvinylnitrate reactants at a temperature and for a time sufficient to effect replacement of a nitrate group by an azide group.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, wherein the reaction temperature is between about 20.degree. C. and 80.degree. C.
- 3. A process according to claim 1, wherein the azide is sodium azide.
- 4. A process according to claim 1, wherein the azide in lithium azide.
- 5. A process according to claim 1, wherein the solvent is selected from the group consisting of dimethyl formamide, N-methylpyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, acetone and 2-methoxyethanol, and mixtures thereof.
- 6. A process according to claim 1, wherein the solvent is dimethyl formamide.
- 7. A process according to claim 6, wherein the azide is sodium azide.
- 8. A process according to claim 1, wherein the polyvinylazide produced contains nitrate groups.
- 9. A process according to claim 1, wherein the polyvinylazide produced is soluble in acetone.
- 10. A process according to claim 1, wherein the polyvinylazide produced is insoluble in acetone.
