Claims
- 1. A gas phase process for the preparation of pyrocatechol monoethers or pyrocatechols of the formula Ia or Ib respectively ##STR7## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -hydrocarbon radicals, and R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -hydrocarbon radical, which comprises dissolving a 2-hydroxycyclohexanone dialkyl ketal of the formula II ##STR8## R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 having the meanings given above in a solvent; heating the solution sufficiently to evaporate the solution, and passing the vapors over a platinum metal catalyst or a platinum metal compound catalyst for 0.1 to 60 seconds to obtain the final product.
- 2. A process as set forth in claim 1, wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen and R.sup.3 is methyl.
- 3. A process as set forth in claim 1, wherein the solvent is methanol, dioxane or tetrahydrofuran, and wherein a pyrocatechol monoether of the formula Ia is produced.
- 4. A process as set forth in claim 1, wherein the process is carried out in the presence of water and a pyrocatechol of the formula Ib is produced.
