Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a compound having the structural formula ##STR21## wherein R is hydrogen, halogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl comprising reacting a mole of a phenol compound having the structural formula ##STR22## wherein R and R.sup.2 are as defined with at least two moles each of acetyl halide and a Lewis acid with the proviso that the phenol and at least one mole of the Lewis acid are reacted to form a complex before the addition of the acetyl halide and any remaining Lewis acid.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein R is chlorine, bromine or methyl, R.sup.2 is methyl or ethyl, the acetyl halide is acetyl chloride and the Lewis acid is aluminum chloride.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein R is chlorine and R.sup.2 is ethyl.
