Claims
- 1. A normally tacky composition comprising (I) a polyacid component selected from the group consisting of (a) aminopolyphosphonic acids, (b) hydroxypolyphosphonic acids, (c) aminopolycarboxylic acids, (d) mixtures of (a), (b), and (c), and (e) salts of (a), (b), (c), and (d), and (II) a coppolymer having a Tg of about 0.degree. C. or less and containing at least one polymerized functional monomer of formula A: ##STR9## in which R.sub.1 is a divalent organic radical of at least 3 atoms in length, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, halo, amino and monovalent organic radicals, and X is --CO--R.sub.4 or --CN wherein R.sub.4 is hydrogen or a monovalent organic radical, the composition being a pressure sensitive adhesive and the polyacid being free of carbon-to-carbon unsaturation.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the copolymer further comprises at least about 40 weight percent of at least one polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer, based upon the weight of the copolymer.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the polyacid component is present in an amount effective for increasing cohesive strength of the composition under acidic conditions.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer, wherein the polymeried olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer is present in a concentration of at least about 40 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer and the polyacid component is present in an amount of at least about 0.1 weight percent based on the weight of the copolymer.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said amount is from about 0.5 to about 5 weight percent.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 having an acidic pH.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 having a pH of about 6.5 or less, said polyacid component being present in an amount effective for increasing cohesive strength of the composition at a pH of about 6.5 or less.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the copolymer comprises at least about 0.1 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer, of at least one polymerized functional monomer having the formula: ##STR10## wherein R.sub.4, R.sub.5, and R.sub.6 are as defined in claim 1, R.sub.3 is a divalent organic radical, Y and Z are independently selected from the group consisting of O, S, and NR.sub.7, and R.sub.7 is H or monovalent organic radical.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the copolymer comprises at least about 40 weight percent, based upon the weight of the copolymer, of at least one polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or alkyl having 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 is a divalent organic radical at least 2 atoms in length.
- 10. The composition of claim 2 wherein the copolymer further comprises a polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer.
- 11. A normally tacky composition comprising (I) a polyacid component selected from the group consisting of (a) aminopolyphosphonic acids, (b) hydroxypolyphosphonic acids, (c) aminopolycarboxylic acids, (d) mixtures of (a), (b), and (c), and (e) salts of (a), (b), (c), and (d), and (II) a copolymer having a Tg of about 0.degree. C. or less and containing pendant functional groups of formula B: ##STR11## wherein R.sub.1 is a divalent organic radical of at least 3 atoms in length and R.sub.4 is H or a monovalent organic radical, the composition being a pressure sensitive adhesive and the polyacid being free of carbon-to-carbon unsaturation.
- 12. The composition of claim 11 wherein the copolymer further contains at least about 40 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer, of at least one polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic and methacrylic acid esters having 4 to about 14 carbon atoms and combinations thereof, the copolymer comprising about 0.25 to about 10 weight percent of said pendant functional groups, based on the weight of the copolymer.
- 13. The composition of claim 11 wherein R.sub.1 is of the formula: ##STR12## wherein Y and Z are independently selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur, and NR.sub.7, R.sub.3 is a divalent organic radical at least about 2 atoms in length, and R.sub.7 is H or hydrocarbyl.
- 14. The composition of claim 13 wherein R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted alkylene, alkylene-oxy, alkyleneimine and alkylene-thio radicals.
- 15. The composition of claim 11 wherein R.sub.1 is an ethylene radical, R.sub.4 is a methyl radical, and the copolymer comprises about 0.1 to about 10 weight percent of said functional groups, based on the weight of the copolymer.
- 16. The composition of claim 11 wherein the copolymer further comprises at least about 0.1 weight percent of a polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, based on the weight of the copolymer.
- 17. The composition of claim 11 wherein said T.sub.g is from about -80.degree. C. to about 0.degree. C., said pendant functional groups are of the formula ##STR13## wherein R.sub.3 is a divalent organic radical at least 2 atoms in length, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or a monovalent organic radical, and said groups are present in an amount from about 0.1 to about 10 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer.
- 18. A mixture comprising (I) a polyacid component selected from the group consisting of (a) aminopolyphosphonic acids, (b) hydroxypolyphosphonic acids, (c) aminopolycarboxylic acids, (d) mixtures of (a), (b), and (c), and (e) salts of (a), (b), (c), and (d), and (II) a copolymer containing at least one pendant functional group of formula B: ##STR14## in which R.sub.1 is a divalent organic radical of at least 3 atoms in length and X is -- CO -- R.sub.4 or -- CN wherein R.sub.4 is hydrogen or a monovalent organic radical, the mixture being a pressure sensitive adhesive and the polyacid being free of carbon-to-carbon unsaturation.
- 19. The mixture defined in claim 18 wherein the copolymer further comprises at least about 40 weight percent of at least one polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer, based on the weight of the copolymer.
- 20. The composition of claim 1 further comprising at least about 40 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer, of a polymerized olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester monomer, wherein the copolymer comprises at least about 0.1 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer, of the polyacid component and at least about 0.1 weight percent, based on the weight of the copolymer, of a polymerized functional monomer of formula A.
