Claims
- 1. A composition consisting essentially of a pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consisting of the reaction product of:
- (a) 25-97 parts by weight of an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a T.sub.g less than 0.degree. C.;
- (b) 3-75 parts by Weight of a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer whose homopolymer has a solubility parameter of no greater than 10.50 and a T.sub.g greater than 15.degree. C.; and
- (c) 0-5 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer whose homopolymer has a solubility parameter greater than 10.50 and a T.sub.g greater than 15.degree. C.,
- the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer being chosen such that the 90.degree. peel adhesion of said reaction product to a polypropylene surface is at least 2 lbs/0.5 in. after a 72 hour dwell at room temperature as measured according to Test Procedure B, with the proviso that the composition contains essentially no emulsifier.
- 2. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer are chosen such that the 90.degree. peel adhesion of said reaction product to a polypropylene surface is at least 2.5 lbs/0.5 in. after a 72 hour dwell at room temperature as measured according to Test Procedure B.
- 3. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer are chosen such that the 90.degree. peel adhesion of said reaction product to a polypropylene surface is at least 3 lbs/0.5 in. after a 72 hour dwell at room temperature as measured according to Test Procedure B.
- 4. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer are chosen such that the shear strength of said reaction product at both room temperature and at 70.degree. C. is greater than 50 minutes as measured according to Test Procedure C.
- 5. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer are chosen such that the shear strength of said reaction product at both room temperature and at 70.degree. C. is greater than 1,000 minutes as measured according to Test Procedure C.
- 6. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer are chosen such that the shear strength of said reaction product at both room temperature and at 70.degree. C. is greater than 10,000 minutes as measured according to Test Procedure C.
- 7. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the 1 radian/second tan delta maximum glass transition temperature of said reaction product is between -45.degree. C. and 15.degree. C., inclusive.
- 8. The pressure sensitive adhesive of claim 1, wherein the 1 radian/second tan delta maximum glass transition temperature of said reaction product is between -20.degree. C. and -5.degree. C., inclusive.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and 0 parts by weight of said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
- 10. The composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of said acrylic acid ester is between 40 and 85 parts by weight.
- 11. The composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is between 15 and 60 parts by weight.
- 12. The composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is between 0 and 3 parts by weight.
- 13. The composition of claim 1, wherein said acrylic acid ester is selected from the group consisting of isooctyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, isononyl acrylate, isodecyl acrylate, decyl acrylate, lauryl acrylate, hexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, octadecyl acrylate, and combinations thereof.
- 14. The composition of claim 1, wherein said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is a monomer other than a methacrylate monomer.
- 15. The composition of claim 1, wherein said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is selected from the group consisting of 3,3,5 trimethylcyclohexyl acrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, isobornyl acrylate, N-octyl acrylamide, t-butyl acrylate, and combinations thereof.
- 16. The composition of claim 1, wherein said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, itaconic acid, N,N dimethyl acrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam, acrylonitrile, tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate, glycidyl acrylate, 2-phenoxyethylacrylate, benzylacrylate, and combinations thereof.
- 17. The composition of claim 1, wherein said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is isobornyl acrylate.
- 18. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate, isobornyl acrylate, and acrylic acid.
- 19. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate and isobornyl acrylate.
- 20. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate, N-octyl acrylamide, and acrylic acid.
- 21. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexyl acrylate.
- 22. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate, 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexyl acrylate, and acrylic acid.
- 23. The composition of claim 1, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive polymer consists of the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, and acrylic acid.
- 24. A pressure sensitive adhesive consisting essentially of:
- (A) the reaction product of:
- (i) 25-97 parts by weight of an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a T.sub.g less than 0.degree. C.;
- (ii) 3-75 parts by weight of a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer whose homopolymer has a solubility parameter of no greater than 10.50 and a T.sub.g greater than 15 .degree. C.;
- (iii) 0-5 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer whose homopolymer has a solubility parameter of greater than 10.50 and a T.sub.g greater than 15.degree. C.; and, optionally,
- (iv) a crosslinking agent; and, optionally,
- (B) one or more additives selected from the group consisting essentially of microspheres, plasticizers, tackifiers, coloring agents, reinforcing agents, fire retardants, foaming agents, thermally conductive agents, electrically conductive agents, post-curing agents, accelerators, and combinations thereof,
- the relative amounts of said acrylic acid ester, said non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and said polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer being chosen such that the 90.degree. peel adhesion of said reaction product to a polypropylene surface is at least 2 lbs/0.5 in. after a 72 hour dwell at room temperature as measured according to Test Procedure B.
