Claims
- 1. A measurement system comprising:
- measurement transducer means for measuring pressure as a function of displacement of capacitor plate members in said transducer means relative to one another and to a displacement axis;
- bellow means aligned and coupled to said transducer means for displacement relative to said displacement axis, said bellow means having an interior space space for receiving fluid for pressure measurement;
- housing means enclosing said bellow means and said transducer means whereby fluid under pressure, when applied to the interior space of said bellow means produces displacement of said bellow means and said transducer means relative to said displacement axis as a function of the fluid under pressure;
- said bellow means and said transducer means being attached to opposite ends of said housing means so that said transducer means is in compression in a static condition; and
- said transducer means being constructed of a material which when subjected to compression has a relatively small displacement along said displacement axis as compared to the displacement of said bellow means and where said material responds to compression forces applied by said bellow means with repeatable elastic characteristics and has a low temperature coefficient of expansion.
- 2. The measurement system as defined in claim 1 wherein said transducer means is constructed of quartz material.
- 3. The measurement system as defined in claim 2 wherein said housing means includes a tubular inner housing member with an internally directed flange portion end wherein said transducer means has one end in engagement with said flange portion and where a terminal end of said bellow means is attached to said tubular inner housing member so that the bellow means and transducer means are supported at opposite ends of the tubular inner housing construction when assembled to one another;
- said housing means including a tubular outer housing member enclosing said inner housing member, said outer housing member being attached at one terminal end to a terminal end of said tubular inner housing member so that said inner housing member is supported by the attached terminal ends; and
- said tubular outer housing member having a length greater then the length of said tubular inner housing member and having an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of said tubular inner housing member so that there is an annular spacing between said tubular inner housing member and said tubular outer housing member and so that said bellow means and said transducer means are supported independently by said outer housing member independently of said tubular inner housing member.
- 4. The measurement system as defined in claim 3 wherein said transducer means has an outer cylindrical shape and further includes annular spacer elements disposed at both ends of said transducer means for preventing sideway movement of said transducer means in said tubular inner housing member.
- 5. The measurement system as defined in claim 3 and further including a cylindrically shaped force plate member disposed between said transducer means and said bellow means;
- said tubular inner housing member having an annular internal groove;
- said face plate member having a flange portion displaceable in said groove between the facing surfaces of said groove whereby said flange portion mechanically limits travel of said face plate member; and
- said face plate member and said tubular housing construction being constructed from metal material.
- 6. The measurement system as defined in claim 3 wherein said transducer means includes
- a cylindrically shaped member constructed with adjacent components with annular portions integrally joined together at a transverse plane relative to a central axis for said member, said adjacent components having central portions defining a spacing gap between facing surfaces on either side of said transverse plane;
- each of said components of said components being constructed of a ring member part, a toroid member part and a flanged member part where said toroid member part is integrally joined with a flange portion of said flanged member part and said ring member part is integrally joined with said flange member part for defining an annular spacing gap between facing surfaces on said toroid member part and said ring member part; and
- capacitor plate means formed by metallic surfaces on each of said central portions for providing at least two electrical capacitors for obtaining capacitance measurements as a function of the spacing gap.
- 7. The measurement system as defined in claim 6 wherein
- said transducer means is constructed of quartz material;
- said metallic surfaces are thin metallized films;
- said toroid member part and said flange member part have access openings for electrical conductor means; and
- electrical conductor means connected to said thin metallized films for connection of said capacitor plate means to electrical circuitry.
- 8. The transducer as defined in claim 7 and further including a layer of metallized film on the end surface of a flange part member so as to be disposed between said bellow means and said transducer means and between said transducer means and said inner housing construction.
- 9. The transducer as defined in claim 7 wherein said electrical conductor means include metallized films.
- 10. The transducer as defined in claim 6 wherein the flanged member part has an annular depending ring portion which has a internally located lower curved surface joining the inner cylindrical wall of the depending ring portion and which has an annular semi-circular groove located in the surface of the flange portion in a position in vertical alignment with said lower curved surface.
- 11. The transducer as defined in claim 6 wherein said toroid member part has an annular outer groove.
- 12. The measurement system as defined in claim 1 wherein said bellows means included a cylindrically shaped wall construction with a sinuous configuration in vertical cross-section and cavities therein, said wall construction including a lower cylindrically shaped closure member, an intermediate cylindrically shaped tubular member having portions of different outer diameter and an upper cylindrically shaped closure member.
- 13. The measurement system as defined in claim 12 and further including toroidal filler members disposed in said cavities.
- 14. A measurement system for use in a downhole well tool for sensing pressure data including
- well tool housing means adapted for passage through a well bore to a well depth for sensing well pressure data;
- said well tool housing means including an outer housing means constructed from load supporting materials and including interconnected sections, said interconnected sections having hollow interiors for containing instrumentation for use in sensing well pressure data;
- one of said sections including first and second tubular outer housing members interconnected by a ring member and where said first tubular outer member is constructed and arranged to enclose electrical components;
- a tubular inner support housing member disposed within said second tubular outer housing member where said second outer housing member is connected at a terminal end to a terminal end of said second tubular outer housing member, said inner support housing member having an inwardly directed flange portion at an opposite terminal end, said inner support housing member being separated from the inner wall of said second outer housing member by an annular space;
- bellows means and measurement transducer means disposed within said inner support housing member with said transducer means including a quartz material under compression and with said bellows means attached at a terminal end to said inner support housing member so that fluid under pressure applied to the interior of said bellows means produces a displacement of said quartz material as a function of pressure; and
- means for providing fluid access from the exterior of said well tool to the interior of said bellows means.
- 15. The measurement system as set forth in claim 14 and further including
- mechanical limit means disposed between said bellows means and said transducer means and cooperative with said inner support housing member for mechanically limiting the axial displacement of said bellows means relative to said inner support housing member.
- 16. The measurement system as set forth in claim 14 wherein said quartz material is functionally integral and said transducer means defines a first set of first facing surfaces defining a first spacing gap where said first facing surfaces are displaceable relative to one another as a function of compression of said transducer means, first capacitor plate means on said first facing surfaces of deriving a first capacitance measurement as a function of displacement of said first facing surfaces;
- said transducer means defines a second set of second facing surfaces defining a second spacing gap located transversely relative to said first spacing gap in said transducer means; and
- second capacitor plate means on said second facing surfaces for deriving a second capacitance measurement as a function of displacement of said second facing surface where said first and second capacitance measurements are interrelated functions of the displacement of said first facing surfaces and said second facing surfaces.
