Claims
- 1. A bolted connection comprising a plurality of members formed of a metal having a first degree of hardness and each having a bolt receiving bore formed at a basic nominal diameter, the members being disposed to align the bores thereof;
- a bolt received in said aligned bores and formed of a metal having a degree of hardness greater than said first degree and being in the configuration of an elongated element having a head integrally formed with a shank extending therefrom and terminating in a fastening portion opposite the head, said shank being in the general form of a right circular cylinder of a diameter substantially equal to said basic nominal diameter, the shank having uniformly circumferentially spaced arcuate corrugations axially extending between the head and fastening portion, the corrugations forming a continuously arcuate surface and having respective alternately circumferentially spaced crests and roots all radially spaced from the basic nominal diameter at substantially the same distance and providing an interference fit between said shank and the metal surrounding the bores in said members, the number of said crests divided by the nominal circumference of said bolt resulting in a number in the range of 14 to 32, the radius of said bolt divided by the radius of said arcuate corrugation resulting in a number within the range of 2 to 5, said bolt being a force fit in said aligned bores and so proportioned to the bores that a driven insertion of said shank into the bores will effect radial compression of said surrounding metal to a degree sufficient to cause controlled plastic flow of said metal radially and circumferentially of the bolt and to bring the metal into close contact with the shank for minimizing stress corrosion of the bolted connection; and
- a cooperating fastening member secured to said fastening portion of the bolt to tension the bolt and clamp the members together.
- 2. A bolted connection according to claim 1, wherein the radial spacing of said crests and roots from said basic nominal diameter is at least 0.0005 inch, but not exceeding 0.004 inch.
- 3. A bolted connection according to claim 1, wherein the radial distance between adjacent crests and roots is 0.003 inch.
- 4. A bolted connection according to claim 2, wherein said plurality of members are formed of aluminum.
- 5. A bolted connection according to claim 4, wherein said bolt is formed of titanium.
- 6. A bolt for forming a controlled radially prestressed connection between a plurality of members formed of material relatively softer than the material of said bolt, said members having aligned bolt receiving bores of a nominal bore diameter; said bolt comprising a head and an elongated shank in the form of a right circular cylinder having a nominal bolt diameter substantially equal to said nominal bore diameter, said shank having circumferentially spaced arcuate continuously undulating axially extending alternately convex lobes and concave grooves, the number of said convex lobes divided by the nominal circumference of said bolt resulting in a number in the range of 14 to 32, the radius of said bolt divided by the radius of said convex lobes resulting in a number within the range of 2 to 5, the crests and roots of said convex lobes and concave grooves being spaced radially outwardly and inwardly, respectively, substantially the same distance from said nominal bolt diameter, said convex lobes effecting a radially outward compression of the material surrounding said bores to prestress said material to a degree sufficient to cause controlled plastic flow of said material circumferentially and radially inwardly into the concave grooves of said bolt to preclude excessive prestress of the material surrounding said bores, the maximum angle of metal flow being tangent to the arc of said convex lobes and concave grooves at the point of transition therebetween.
- 7. A bolt for forming a controlled radially prestressed connection between a plurality of members formed of material relatively softer than the material of said bolt, said members having aligned bolt receiving bores of a nominal bore diameter; said bolt comprising a head and an elongated shank in the form of a right circular cylinder having a nominal bolt diameter substantially equal to said nominal bore diameter, said shank having circumferentially spaced arcuate continuously undulating axially extending alternately convex lobes and concave grooves, the number of said convex lobes divided by the nominal circumference of said bolt resulting in a number in the range of 14 to 32, the crests and roots of said convex lobes and concave grooves being spaced radially outwardly and inwardly, respectively, a distance from said nominal bolt diameter within the range of 0.0005 to 0.003 inch, said convex lobes effecting a radially outward compression of the material surrounding said bores to prestress said material circumferentially and radially inwardly into the concave grooves of said bolt to preclude excessive prestress of the material surrounding said bores, the angle of metal flow being a maximum at the point of transition between said convex lobes and concave grooves.
- 8. A bolt for forming a controlled radially prestressed connection between a plurality of members formed of material relatively softer than the material of said bolt, said members having aligned bolt receiving bores of a nominal bore diameter; said bolt comprising a head and an elongated shank portion in the form of a right circular cylinder having a nominal bolt diameter substantially equal to said nominal bore diameter, said shank having circumferentially spaced continuously undulating arcuate axially extending alternately convex lobes and concave grooves, the number of said convex lobes divided by the nominal circumference of said bolt resulting in a number in the range of 14 to 32, the crests and roots of said convex lobes and concave grooves, respectively, being radially spaced substantially the same distance from said nominal bolt diameter, said convex lobes effecting a prestress of the material surrounding said bores to a degree only sufficient to cause controlled plastic flow of said material circumferentially oppositely and radially inwardly into the concave grooves of said bolt, the maximum angle of material flow being within the range of 10.degree. to 20.degree. relative to a tangent to said nominal bolt diameter at the point of transition between said convex lobes and concave grooves thereby to preclude excessive prestress of the material surrounding said bores.
- 9. A bolt for forming a controlled radially prestressed connection between a plurality of members formed of material relatively softer than the material of said bolt, said members having aligned bolt receiving bores of a nominal bore diameter; said bolt comprising a head and an elongated shank portion in the form of a right circular cylinder having a nominal bolt diameter substantially equal to said nominal bore diameter, said shank having circumferentially spaced continuously undulating arcuate axially extending alternately convex lobes and concave grooves, the number of said convex lobes divided by the nominal circumference of said bolt resulting in a number in the range of 14 to 32, the crests and roots of said convex lobes and concave grooves, respectively, being radially spaced from said nominal bolt diameter within the range of 0.0005 to 0.003 inch, the ratio of the radius of arc of said lobes to said nominal bolt diameter being less than 8 where said nominal bolt diameter is less than 0.1631 inch, said convex lobes effecting a radially outward compression of the material surrounding said bores to prestress said material to a degree sufficient to cause controlled plastic flow of said material circumferentially and radially inwardly into the concave grooves of said bolt.
- 10. A bolt for forming a controlled radially prestressed connection between a plurality of members formed of material relatively softer than the material of said bolt, said members having aligned bolt receiving bores of a nominal bore diameter; said bolt comprising a head and an elongated shank portion in the form of a right circular cylinder having a nominal bolt diameter substantially equal to said nominal bore diameter, said shank having circumferentially spaced continuously undulating arcuate axially extending alternately convex lobes and concave grooves, the number of said convex lobes divided by the nominal circumference of said bolt resulting in a number in the range of 14 to 32, the crests and roots of said convex lobes and concave grooves, respectively, being radially spaced from said nominal bolt diameter within the range of 0.0005 to 0.003 inch, the ratio of the radius of arc of said lobes to said nominal diameter being less than 5 where said diameter is 0.1894 inches or more.
- 11. A bolt in accordance with claim 7 wherein the spacing of said lobe crests and groove roots from said nominal bolt diameter is 0.015, respectively.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This application is a continuation of my copending application Ser. No. 182,535, filed Sept. 21, 1971, now abandoned.
