Claims
- 1. A printed color image comprising a substrate having a surface, a medium printed on the surface, three color separated halftones of the image formed from the medium, each of the color separated halftones of the image having a distinct diffraction grating which reflects a different primary color when viewed at a specific angle, each diffraction grating formed from a plurality of substantially parallel grooves each having a cross section that is substantially symmetrical about a centerline whereby the three color separated halftones create a color copy of the image.
- 2. A printed color image as in claim 1 wherein the three color separated halftones are comprised of a plurality of three pixels, each of the pixels having an element corresponding to one of the distinct diffraction gratings.
- 3. A printed color image as in claim 2 wherein the elements of each of the pixels are approximately equal in size and have the shape of an equilateral triangle.
- 4. A printed color image as in claim 2 wherein the elements of each of the pixels are approximately equal in size and have the shape of a diamond.
- 5. A printed color image as in claim 2 wherein the pixels are each formed from a plurality of equilaterial triangles.
- 6. A printed color image as in claim 1 wherein the three different colors are blue, red and green.
- 7. A printed color image as in claim 1 wherein the three different colors are yellow, magenta and cyan.
- 8. A printed color image as in claim 1 wherein the groove centerline for each of the diffraction gratings is aligned at a different angle relative to the groove centerline for each of the other diffraction gratings.
- 9. A printed color image as in claim 1 wherein the substrate is printing stock and the medium is a photopolymer ink.
- 10. A printed color image comprising a sheet-like substrate having a surface, an ink printed on the surface of the substrate, three color separated halftones of the image formed from the ink, each of the color separated halftones of the image having a distinct diffraction grating formed thereon which reflects a different primary color when viewed at a specific angle, each diffraction grating formed from a plurality of substantially parallel grooves each having a cross section that is substantially symmetrical about a centerline whereby the three color separated halftones create a color copy of the image.
- 11. A printed color image as in claim 10 wherein the substrate is printing stock.
- 12. A printed color image as in claim 10 wherein the three color separated halftones of the image are formed from a portion of the ink printed on the surface of the substrate.
- 13. A printed color image comprising a substrate having a surface, a first ink printed on the surface of the substrate, a pattern of three distinct diffraction gratings formed from the first ink, each of the diffraction gratings reflecting a different primary color when viewed at a specific angle and formed from a plurality of substantially parallel grooves each having a cross section that is substantially symmetrical about a centerline, a second ink printed on a portion of the pattern of diffraction gratings so that the pattern of diffraction gratings not printed on with the second ink form three color separated halftones of the image to create a color copy of the image.
- 14. A printed color image as in claim 13 wherein the substrate is printing stock.
