Claims
- 1. A printer adaptable for printing with a monochrome printing ribbon cartridge which is kept in a fixed vertical position during printing or a multi-color printed ribbon cartridge which is moved vertically during printing, the printer comprising:
- a printer body;
- printing ribbon cartridge holder means supported on the printer body for removably receiving a monochrome or a multicolor printing ribbon cartridge;
- transmission means supported on the printer body and coupled to the cartridge holder means for positioning and moving a cartridge held in the cartridge holder means for printing:
- selection means for selecting a first monochrome printing mode in which a monochrome printing ribbon cartridge is kept in a fixed vertical position during printing when a monochrome ribbon cartridge is mounted on the holder means and a second multi-color printing mode in which the multi-color printing ribbon cartridge is moved vertically during printing when a multi-color ribbon cartridge is mounted on the holder means;
- adjustable control signal means on the printer body for providing a first control signal at a predetermined level to establish an initial position of the printing ribbon cartridge holder means;
- setting means for adjusting the control signal from the adjustable control signal means includes a semi-fixed resistor which provides an output that is a first analog voltage; converter means for converting the first analog voltage into a first digital signal; register means having the first digital signal as an input; and drive input signal means for providing a drive input signal;
- drive means responsive to the first control signal to position the cartridge holder means, selectively mountable on the printer, selectively engageable with the transmission means, for supplying power to the transmission means to selectively position the cartridge holder means, the transmission means positioning the cartridge holder means for monochrome printing when the drive means is not present, and, when the drive means is present, for one of monochrome and multi-color printing; and
- comparing means for comparing the first digital signal in the register means with the drive input signal to provide a signal for operating the drive means.
- 2. The printer of claim 1, wherein the transmission means responds to the presence of a multi-color printing ribbon cartridge to correctly position the cartridge at a color home position and responds to the presence of a monochrome cartridge to correctly center the monochrome printing ribbon for monochrome printing.
- 3. The printer of claim 2, including one of a monochrome and a multi-color printing ribbon cartridge wherein one of the monochrome ribbon cartridge and the multi-color ribbon cartridge has a structural characteristic which distinguishes it from the other cartridge and in which the transmission means is responsive to one of the presence and the absence of the structural characteristic to correctly position the cartridge holder means for printing with the ribbon cartridge which is present.
- 4. The printer of claim 3 and including detector means for responding to one of the presence and the absence of the structural characteristic of the printing ribbon cartridge to provide a first control signal, wherein the transmission means is responsive to the first control signal to correctly position the cartridge holder means for one of monochrome and multi-color printing.
- 5. The printer of claim 4, wherein the structural characteristic includes a first projection on the multi-color printing ribbon cartridge and wherein the detector means includes a switch which is contacted by the first projection.
- 6. The printer of claim 5 and including a second projection on the carriage means, the detector means also responds to contact with the second projection to provide a second control signal, wherein the transmission means response to the second control signal to position the cartridge holder means at a color home position.
- 7. The printer of claim 6, wherein the detector means includes a single circuit switch having two sets of contacts, one set being normally closed and the other set being normally open, the first set of contacts being opened by contact with the first projection, and the second set of contacts being closed when the cartridge holder means has been positioned at the color home position.
- 8. The printer of claim 1, including
- print head means, wherein the cartridge holder means is rotated by the transmission means relative to the print head means to selectively position a printing ribbon cartridge for printing.
- 9. The printer of claim 8, including
- carriage means, wherein the print head means and the transmission means are supported on the carriage means.
- 10. The printer of claim 9, wherein the drive means is supported on the carriage means.
- 11. The printer of claim 1, wherein a monochrome or multi-color cartridge is pivotally supported in a generally horizontal position at a point intermediate its length by the cartridge holder means, the printer further including resilient means operatively connected between the carriage means and a point on the portion of the cartridge which lies on the side of the pivotal support thereof away from the print head for rotating the cartridge in a first direction.
- 12. The printer of claim 11, wherein the means for positioning a monochrome ribbon cartridge is positioned on the carriage between the print head and the cartridge holder means and restricts rotation of the cartridge when the cartridge is rotated by the resilient means.
- 13. The printer of claim 11, wherein the means for positioning a monochrome ribbon cartridge limits rotation of the cartridge by the resilient means.
- 14. The printer of claim 13, wherein the multi-color ribbon cartridge is constructed so that when it is being rotated to select a color for printing, the cartridge will not be limited from such rotation by the means for positioning a monochrome cartridge.
- 15. The printer of claim 14, wherein the multi-color ribbon cartridge includes a recessed portion in which the means for positioning a monochrome ink ribbon cartridge is received without contact therewith.
- 16. The printer of claim 1, wherein the drive means includes a motor, and the printer further includes conversion means coupled to the motor for converting rotation thereof into rotation of the multi-color ribbon cartridge.
- 17. The printer of claim 16 and further including cam follower means engaging the cartridge holder means for transmitting rotation thereto; and cam means rotated by the motor for driving the cam follower means.
- 18. The printer of claim 17, wherein the cam means includes an eccentric surface which is contacted by the cam follower means.
- 19. The printer of claim 17, wherein the cam means includes a stop in the path of the cam follower means for defining the home position for multi-color ribbon cartridge rotational positioning.
- 20. The printer of claim 19, wherein the driving unit means includes a step motor, and the printer includes means for detecting engagement of the cam follower means and the cam means by the stepping of the step motor.
- 21. The printer of claim 1, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color ribbons having widths different than those of monochrome ribbons.
- 22. The printer of claim 1, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color printing ribbons having a width of 25 mm and monochrome printing ribbons having a width of about 13 mm.
- 23. The printer of claim 1, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color printing ribbons having four longitudinal color bands.
- 24. A printer for printing with a monochrome printing ribbon cartridge that is maintained in a fixed vertical position during printing or a multi-color printing ribbon cartridge that is moved vertically during printing by interchange of a monochrome printing ribbon cartridge and a multi-color printing ribbon cartridge, the printer comprising:
- a print head;
- one of a monochrome and a multi-color printing ribbon cartridge and the multi-color ribbon cartridge has a structural characteristic including a first projection which distinguishes it from the monochrome cartridge;
- cartridge holder means for removably receiving one of a monochrome or a multi-color printing ribbon cartridge, the cartridge holder means being supported for movement relative to the print head;
- selection means for selecting a first monochrome printing mode in which a monochrome cartridge is fixed vertically during printing when it is mounted on the cartridge holder means and a second multi-color printing mode in which a multi-color cartridge is moved vertically during printing when it is mounted on the cartridge holder means, the selection means including detector means responsive to the presence or absence of the structural characteristic of the printing ribbon cartridge for providing a first control signal;
- transmission means responsive to the first control signal for correctly positioning the cartridge holder means at the print head for printing;
- carriage means supporting the print head and the transmission means and including a second structural characteristic and the detector means responds to contacting the second structural characteristic to provide a second control signal and the transmission means responds to the second control signal to position the cartridge holder means at a color home position when a multi-color cartridge is in the cartridge holder means; and the detection means includes a single circuit switch having two sets of contacts, one being normally closed and the other being normally open, the first set of contacts being opened by contact with the first projection and the second set of contacts being closed when the cartridge holder means is positioned at the home color position.
- 25. The printer of claim 24, and including drive means selectively mountable on the printer for positioning the cartridge holder means, the drive means removably coupled to the transmission means.
- 26. The printer of claim 25, wherein movement of the cartridge holder means is restricted so as to correctly position a monochrome printing ribbon for printing when the drive means is not present.
- 27. The printer of claim 25, wherein the drive means further includes control means responsive to the presence in the cartridge holder means of one of a monochrome ribbon cartridge and a multi-color ribbon cartridge for actuating the drive means to correctly position the ribbon of the cartridge at the printhead for printing.
- 28. The printer of claim 27,
- wherein the carriage means supports the print head for movement along a print line, the drive means, the transmission means, and the cartridge holder means being supported on the carriage means for movably positioning the ribbon of a cartridge, when placed in the cartridge holder means, in front of the print head.
- 29. The printer of claim 25, wherein the cartridge holder means is pivotally mounted and the transmission means rotates the cartridge holder means.
- 30. The printer of claim 24, wherein the first structural characteristic includes a projection on the multi-color ribbon cartridge and the detector means includes a switch which is actuated by the projection when the multi-color printing ribbon cartridge is in the cartridge holder means.
- 31. The printer of claim 30, wherein the multi-color ribbon cartridge is subject to movement away from the color home position to change the color of the multi-color ribbon which is selected for printing, and the second structural characteristic includes a second projection on the carriage means and a second switch in the detector means which is actuated by the second projection on the carriage means when the multi-color printing ribbon cartridge is positioned at the color home position.
- 32. The printer of claim 24, wherein the carriage means includes a recess in which the transmission means is received and hook means are on the carriage means for releasably retaining the transmission means when it is in place on the carriage means.
- 33. The printer of claim 24, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color ribbons having widths different than those of monochrome ribbons.
- 34. The printer of claim 24, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color printing ribbons having a width of about 25 mm and monochrome printing ribbons having a width of about 13 mm.
- 35. A printer adjustable for printing with either monochrome printing ribbon cartridges which are fixed vertically in position during printing or multi-color printing ribbon cartridges of different configurations which are moved vertically during printing, the printer comprising:
- a carriage supporting a print head;
- support means in the carriage for removably receiving and pivotally supporting a monochrome or multi-color ribbon cartridge;
- a stop member on the carriage, positioned to engage a portion of a monochrome ribbon cartridge to limit the rotation of a ribbon cartridge at a prescribed position, the stop member configured to not limit the rotation of a multi-color ribbon cartridge during the rotational positioning of a multi-color ribbon cartridge for color selection;
- driving unit means mounted in the carriage at a position for engagement with a multi-color ribbon cartridge to selectively rotate a multi-color ribbon cartridge for color selection, and to not engage a monochromatic ribbon cartridge said driving unit means releasably mounted on the carriage when multi-color ribbon cartridges are used, and including a motor and transmission means coupled to the motor for converting rotation of the motor into rotation of a multi-color ribbon cartridge; and
- resilient means for biasing a cartridge towards engagement with the stop member and driving unit means.
- 36. The printer of claim 35, wherein the carriage includes an aperture over which the driving unit means is seated and the driving unit means includes lock pin means mounted on the driving unit means and passing through the aperture in the carriage to engage an outer surface thereof when the lock pin means is rotated, to secure the driving unit means to the carriage.
- 37. The printer of claim 35, wherein the carriage includes a recess within which the driving unit means is received, and hook means are within the recess for detachably securing the driving unit means therein.
- 38. The printer of claim 35, wherein the carriage includes a recess within which the driving unit means is received, said recess being formed with an aperture in the bottom thereof, and the driving unit means includes lock pin means rotatably mounted on the driving unit means and positioned to pass through the aperture in the carriage to engage the outer surface thereof when the lock pin means is rotated, whereby the driving unit means is secured to the carriage.
- 39. The printer of claim 35, wherein the support means includes cartridge holder means which is pivotally supported on the carriage.
- 40. The printer of claim 35, wherein the transmission means includes
- cam follower means engaging the cartridge for transmitting rotation thereto and cam means rotated by the motor for driving the cam follower means.
- 41. The printer of claim 40, wherein the cam means is a rotary cam having a spiral profile for driving the cam follower means.
- 42. The printer of claim 40, wherein the cam means includes an eccentric surface which is contacted by the cam follower means.
- 43. The printer of claim 40, wherein the cam means includes a stop in the path of the cam follower means for defining the rotational home position for a multi-color ribbon cartridge.
- 44. The printer of claim 43, wherein the motor is a step motor, and the drive unit means includes means for detecting engagement of the cam follower and the cam means by the stopping of the step motor.
- 45. The printer of claim 35, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color printing ribbons having four longitudinal color bands.
- 46. The printer of claim 35, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color ribbons having widths different than those of monochrome ribbons.
- 47. The printer of claim 35, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color printing ribbons having a width of about 25 mm and monochrome printing ribbons having a width of about 13 mm.
- 48. The printer of claim 35, wherein the printer is adapted for printing with multi-color printing ribbons having four longitudinal color bands.
