Claims
- 1. In or for a printer for printing information on a flexible sheet bearing a magnetic recording surface on a first portion of said sheet, magnetic recording/reproducing means for recording information on and reading information from said magnetic recording surface, said magnetic recording/reproducing means comprising, in combination,
- a magnetic read/write transducer,
- a guide structure for guiding said sheet past said transducer means with said magnetic recording surface in close proximity to said transducer, and
- a drive mechanism contacting a second portion of said sheet for moving said sheet past said transducer, said drive mechanism being spaced from said transducer by a distance sufficient to enable said first portion of said sheet to flex independently of said second portion of said sheet when said sheet is passing through said guide structure.
- 2. A device as in claim 1 including a resilient bias mechanism for urging said magnetic surface against said transducer means independently of said drive mechanism.
- 3. A device as in claim 1 in which said sheet is elongated and said magnetic surface is a longitudinal strip, and said drive mechanism is located transversely across said strip from said transducer and moves said strip longitudinally past said transducer.
- 4. A device as in claim 1 in which said drive mechanism includes opposed rollers gripping said sheet, and bias means for applying pressure to said rollers.
- 5. In or for a transportation document printer for printing transportation information on elongated sheets bearing magnetic recording stripes adjacent one edge,
- a read/write head,
- a first bias structure for urging said sheets against said head,
- a drive mechanism including drive rollers positioned for gripping said sheets and moving them longitudinally past said read/write head, said drive mechanism being spaced laterally from said head while maintaining a flexible portion of said sheet between said drive mechanism and said head when said sheets are passing through said printer, and a second bias structure for applying gripping pressure to said drive rollers.
- 6. In or for a transportation document printer for printing transportation information on elongated card stock sheets bearing magnetic recording stripes adjacent one edge,
- a first read/write head,
- a second read/write head in series with the first read/write head,
- bias means for urging said sheets against said heads,
- a drive belt and mating rollers positioned for gripping said sheet at a location spaced laterally from said heads to move said sheet past said heads while maintaining a flexible portion of said sheet between said belt and said first and second heads, and
- means for checking for errors in the reading or writing by the first of said heads reached by one of said sheets, and for correcting said errors using the other of said heads.
- 7. A device as in claim 1 in which said sheet is elongated and has first and second spaced-apart longitudinal edges, and said drive mechanism moves said sheet past said transducer in the direction of said longitudinal edges, with said first portion comprising a magnetic strip adjacent said first longitudinal edge, said drive mechanism being mounted in said guide structure at a position to contact said sheet at a location spaced from said first portion in a direction transverse to said direction of travel.
- 8. A device as in claim 7 in which said drive mechanism contacts said sheet approximately midway between said first and second longitudinal edges of said sheet.
