Claims
- 1. A print head, comprising: a support assembly including a support frame, a first set of wheels rotatably mounted by the support frame, each wheel of the first set having a plurality of sides which are relatively long in its rotational plane, a support assembly module mounted by the support frame, the support assembly module including a module frame, a second set of wheels rotatably mounted by the module frame, each wheel of the second set having a plurality of sides which are relatively short in its rotational plane, a first set of printing bands engaged with and movable relative to the respective wheels of the first set, each printing band of the first set having a plurality of printing blocks with a printing block in supported contact with a side of a wheel of the first set, and a second set of printing bands engaged with and movable relative to the respective wheels of the second set, the module frame being mounted relative to the support frame so that the first and second sets of wheels are disposed in a row for enabling the printing bands to print a line of data, each printing band of the second set having a plurality of printing blocks with a printing block being in supported contact with a side of a wheel of the second set, the axis of rotation of the first set of wheels being parallel to the axis of rotation of the second set of wheels, the printing blocks of the first and second printing band which are in supported contact with the respective first and second wheels being disposed in a common plane.
- 2. A print head as defined in claim 1, wherein the support assembly module further includes a separate detent for each wheel of the first set.
- 3. A print head as defined in claim 1, wherein the first and second sets of wheels are square, the mounting means comprising a first shaft for mounting the first set of wheels for independent rotation and a second shaft for mounting the second set of wheels for independent rotation, the first and second shafts being parallel.
- 4. A print head, comprising: a support assembly including a support frame, a first set of wheels rotatably mounted by the support frame and filling the support frame to less than its full capacity, each wheel of the first set having a plurality of sides which are of a certain length in its rotational plane, a support assembly module including a module frame and a second set of rotatably mounted wheels filling at least part of the remaining capacity of the support frame, each wheel of the second set having a plurality of sides which are of a different length in its rotational plane than the certain length of the sides of the wheels of the first set, the module frame being mounted relative to the support frame so that the first and second sets of wheels are disposed in a row for enabling the printing bands to print a line of data, a printing band engaged with and movable relative to each of the wheels, and means connecting the support frame and the module frame.
- 5. A print head as defined in claim 4, wherein each printing band engaged with a side of the respective wheel of the first set has relatively long printing blocks, and each printing band engaged with a side of the respective wheel of the second set has relatively short printing blocks.
- 6. A print head, comprising: a support assembly including a support frame, a first set of multisided wheels mounted by the support frame, a support assembly module mounted by the support frame, the support assembly module including a module frame, a second set of multisided wheels mounted by the module frame, the second set of wheels differing in radial dimension from the first set of wheels, a first set of printing bands engaged with and movable relative to the respective wheels of the first set, each printing band of the first set having a plurality of printing blocks with a printing block in supported contact with one wheel of the first set, and a second set of printing bands engaged with and movable relative to the respective wheels of the second set, each printing band of the second set having a plurality of printing blocks with a printing block being in supported contact with one wheel of the second set, the printing blocks of the first and second printing bands which are in supported contact with the respective first and second wheels being disposed in a common plane and being aligned to print a line of data.
- 7. A print head as defined in claim 6, wherein the support assembly module further includes a separate detent for each wheel of the first set, and means for connecting the support assembly module to the support frame.
- 8. A print head as defined in claim 6, wherein the first and second sets of wheels are square, a first shaft for mounting the first set of wheels for independent rotation and a second shaft for mounting the second set of wheels for independent rotation, the first and second shafts being parallel.
- 9. A print head, comprising: a support assembly including a support frame, a first set of multisided wheels mounted by the support frame and filling the support frame to less than its full capacity, a support assembly module including a module frame and a second set of multisided wheels filling at least part of the remaining capacity of the support frame, the first and second sets of wheels being disposed in the same row, the first set of wheels being of a different radial dimension than the second set of wheels, a printing band engageable with and movable relative to each of the wheels, and means connecting the support frame and the module frame.
- 10. A print head as defined in claim 9, wherein the first set of wheels are larger in radial dimension than the second set of wheels, wherein each printing band engaged with a wheel of the first set has relatively long printing blocks, and each printing band engaged with a wheel of the second set has relatively short printing blocks.
