Claims
- 1. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising
- a separate cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a rotatably driven brush roller mounted for selected engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter thereon and means for selectively directing cleaning fluid onto said printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof,
- a cleaning fluid supply,
- a separate control module associated with each printing unit, said control modules each including at least one cyclicly operated positive displacement pump for directing a predetermined quantity of cleaning fluid during each cycle of operation, means connecting said control module to said cleaning fluid supply and means connecting said control module to the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit, and said positive displacement pump being selectively operable for directing a controlled predetermined flow of cleaning fluid to the fluid directing means of at least one of said cleaning devices and upon termination of operation of said positive displacement pump the flow of cleaning fluid to said fluid directing means is simultaneously interrupted.
- 2. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 in which each said module includes a separate positive displacement pump for supplying cleaning fluid to the cleaning fluid directing means of the first printing cylinder cleaning device of the associated printing unit and a separate positive displacement pump for directing cleaning fluid to the cleaning fluid directing means for the second printing cylinder cleaning device of the associated printing unit.
- 3. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 in which said cleaning supply includes a supply of solvent and a supply of water, and each said module includes a plurality of positive displacement pumps that are selectively operable for simultaneously directing a mixture of solvent and water from said solvent and water supplies to the cleaning devices for the associated printing unit.
- 4. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 including means for moving said brush roller of each cleaning device into and out of engagement with the respective blanket cylinder, and control valve means within each said module for controlling the brush roller moving means for the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit.
- 5. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 4 including a supply of pressurized air, said brush roller moving means for each cleaning device including an air cylinder, and said control valve means of each module is selectively operable for controlling communication of pressurized air from said pressurized air supply to said air cylinders of the blanket cleaning devices of the associated printing unit for controlling operation of said air cylinders and movement of the brush rollers into and out of engagement with the blanket cylinders of the printing unit.
- 6. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 5 in which said air cylinder control valve means for each module is a single solenoid valve.
- 7. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 including hydraulic motor means for rotatably driving the brush roller of each cleaning device, a main supply of pressurized hydraulic fluid, and said control modules each include means for controlling communication of hydraulic fluid from said hydraulic fluid supply to the hydraulic motor means of each cleaning device of the associated printing unit.
- 8. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 7 in which said hydraulic fluid controlling means for each module includes a selectively adjustable flow compensating control valve for establishing a predetermined flow of pressurized fluid from the module to the hydraulic motor means of the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit and thereby controlling the rotary speed of the brush rollers.
- 9. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 7 in which said hydraulic motors means includes a hydraulic motor associated with each cleaning device, said hydraulic motors each have a hydraulic fluid supply line and a hydraulic fluid return line, said modules each including a hydraulic fluid feed reservoir connected to said main hydraulic fluid supply, and said feed reservoir being connected to the hydraulic motor fluid supply lines for the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit.
- 10. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 9 in which said modules each further include a hydraulic fluid return reservoir, and said return reservoir being connected to the hydraulic motor fluid return lines of the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit.
- 11. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 10 in which said hydraulic fluid feed and return reservoirs each are connected to said main hydraulic fluid supply to define a closed loop hydraulic flow path.
- 12. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 in which the brush roller of each cleaning device has outwardly extending bristles, and each cleaning device includes a flicker bar and means for effecting relative movement of the flicker bar and brush roller between first relative positions in which said flicker bar is in removed relation to the bristles of the brush roller and second relative positions in which flicker bar is in engaging relation with the bristles of the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are flexed to effect removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried by the bristles.
- 13. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 12 including means for moving said brush roller of each cleaning device into and out of engagement with the respective printing cylinder, and said relative movement effecting means of each cleaning device being operable in timed relation to movement of the brush roller of the printing device into and out of engagement with the respective printing cylinder.
- 14. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 12 in which said flicker bar of each cleaning device has a substantially flat surface that is in inclined relation to the bristles of the brush roller passing over the flicker bar when said flicker bar and brush roller are in said second relative positions.
- 15. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 12 in which said flicker bar engages an underside of said brush roller when said flicker bar and brush roller are in said second relative positions.
- 16. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 including air cylinder means for moving the brush roller of each cleaning device into and out of engagement with the respective printing cylinder, a supply of pressurized air, selectively operable control valve means within each module for controlling communication of pressurized air from said air supply to said air cylinder means of the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit and for controlling operation of said air cylinder means and movement of the brush rollers into and out of engagement with the blanket cylinders of the printing unit, hydraulic motor means for rotatably driving the brush roller of each cleaning device, a main supply of pressurized hydraulic fluid, and control valve means within each module for controlling communication of pressurized hydraulic fluid from said main hydraulic fluid supply to said hydraulic motor means of the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit for controlling rotational movement of the respective brush rollers.
- 17. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 in which the brush roller of each cleaning device has outwardly extending bristles, said cleaning device each including a flicker bar and fluid operated means for effecting relative movement of the flicker bar and brush roller between first relative positions in which said flicker bar is in removed relation from the bristles of said brush and second relative positions in which the flicker bar is in engaging relation with the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are flexed to effect removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried by the bristle, a main supply of pressurized fluid, and control valve means within each module for controlling communicating of pressurized fluid from said main pressurized fluid supply to said relative movement effecting means for controlling operation of said relative movement effecting means of the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit.
- 18. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 1 in which said cleaning fluid directing means sprays cleaning fluid directly onto said brush roller.
- 19. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinder cleaning devices associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a brush roller, means for moving said brush roller in a rotary direction, means for moving said brush roller laterally into and out of engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter on said cylinder, said brush roller moving means being fluid operated, a main fluid supply means, a separate control module associated with each said printing unit, a master controller remote from said control modules, and said control module for each printing unit including means for connecting said main fluid supply means to said brush roller moving means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means for controlling operation of each of said brush roller moving means in response to commands from said master controller.
- 20. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 19 in which said blanket cleaning devices each include means for directing cleaning fluid onto the associated printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof, a main cleaning fluid supply, and said control modules each including selectively operable means for connecting said cleaning fluid supply to said cleaning fluid directing means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means for controlling communicating of cleaning fluid from said cleaning fluid supply to the fluid directing means of the respective cleaning devices.
- 21. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 20 in which said cleaning fluid supply includes a supply of solvent and a supply of water, and said modules include means for selectively directing controlled quantities of water and solvent from said solvent and water supplies to the cleaning fluid directing means of the respective printing cylinder cleaning devices.
- 22. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 20 in which the brush roller of each cleaning device has outwardly extending bristles, and said cleaning devices each include a flicker bar and means for moving said flicker bar between an inoperative position removed from the bristles of said brush roller and an operative position engaging the bristles of the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are flexed to effect removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried thereby, and each said module including control valve means for controlling operation of said flicker bar moving means.
- 23. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 22 in which each said module includes control valve means for controlling movement of brush rollers of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit into and out of engagement with the associated printing cylinders, and said means for controlling said flicker bar moving means is operable for moving said flicker bar to said operative position in response to movement of said brush roller to a position out of engagement with the blanket cylinder.
- 24. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 20 in which each said module includes selectively operable pump means for directing cleaning fluid to the respective cleaning devices of the printing unit.
- 25. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 24 in which said pump means for each module includes a separate pump for supplying cleaning fluid to the cleaning fluid directing means of the first printing cylinder cleaning device of the respective printing unit and a separate pump for directing cleaning fluid to the cleaning fluid directing means for the second printing cylinder cleaning device of the respective printing unit.
- 26. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 24 in which said pump means for each module includes a pair of solvent supply positive displacement pumps each for directing solvent to a respective one of the first and second printing cylinder cleaning devices fluid directing means of the respective printing unit and a pair of water supply positive displacement pumps each for directing water to a respective one of the first and second printing cylinder cleaning devices fluid directing means of the respective printing unit.
- 27. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 24 in which said pump means is air operated, a main supply of pressurized air, and said modules each including selectively operable valve means for controlling communication of pressurized air from said air supply to said pump means of the respective module for controlling operation of said pump means and the direction of cleaning fluid to the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit.
- 28. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 20 in which said cleaning devices each include means for draining a waste effluent from the brush roller and associated printing cylinder which includes cleaning fluid directed onto the printing cylinder and foreign matter removed therefrom during a cleaning operation, a waste effluent receptacle for receiving waste effluent from said drain means of said cleaning devices, and solvent recovery means coupled to said waste effluent reservoir for separating solvent from the waste effluent accumulated in said reservoir.
- 29. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 19 in which each said control module includes control valve means operable under control of said master controller for controlling operation of said brush roller means.
- 30. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising a cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a brush roller, means for moving said brush roller in a rotary direction, means for moving said brush roller laterally into and out of engagement with said printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter on said cylinder, at least one of said brush roller moving means including pneumatically controlled means and at least one of said brush roller moving means including hydraulically controlled means, a main hydraulic fluid supply and a main pressurized air supply, a control module associated with each said printing unit, a master controller remote from said control modules and said module for each printing unit including means for connecting said hydraulic fluid and pressurized air supplies to said respective hydraulically controlled means and said pneumatically controlled means for the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means for controlling the supply of hydraulic fluid and pressurized air thereto in response to commands from said master controller.
- 31. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 30 in which said cleaning devices each include means for directing cleaning fluid onto the associated printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof, a main cleaning fluid supply, and said control modules each including selectively operable means for connecting said cleaning fluid supply to said cleaning fluid directing means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means for controlling communication of cleaning fluid from said cleaning fluid supply to the cleaning fluid directing means of the respective cleaning devices.
- 32. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 31 in which said cleaning fluid supply includes a supply of solvent and a supply of water, and said modules include means for selectively directing controlled quantities of water and solvent from said solvent and water supplies to the cleaning fluid directing means of the respective cleaning devices.
- 33. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 31 in which the brush roller of each cleaning device has outwardly extending bristles, and said cleaning devices each include a flicker bar and means for moving said flicker bar between an inoperative position removed from the bristles of said brush roller and an operative position engaging the bristles of the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are flexed to effect removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried thereby, and each said module including control valve means for controlling operation of said flicker bar moving means.
- 34. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 33 in which each said module includes control valve means for controlling movement of said brush rollers of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit into and out of engagement with the associated printing cylinder, and said means for controlling said flicker bar moving means is operable for moving said flicker bar to said operative position in response to movement of said brush roller to a position out of engagement with the printing cylinder.
- 35. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 31 in which each said module includes selectively operable pump means for directing cleaning fluid to the respective cleaning device, said pump means for each module including a separate pump for supplying cleaning fluid to the cleaning fluid directing means of the first printing cylinder cleaning device of the respective printing unit and a separate pump for directing cleaning fluid to the cleaning fluid directing means for the second printing cylinder cleaning device of the respective printing unit.
- 36. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising a cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a brush roller having radially extending deflectable, relatively stiff bristles, means for moving said brush roller in a rotary direction, means for moving said brush roller laterally into and out of engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter on said blanket cylinder, said cleaning devices for each printing unit further including a flicker bar and means for moving said flicker bar between an inoperative position removed from the bristles of said brush roller and an operative position engaging the bristles of the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are deflected to cause snap action flicking and removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried thereby, each of said brush roller moving means and said flicker bar moving means being fluid operated, main fluid supply means, a control module associated with each said printing unit, and said control module for each printing unit including means for connecting said main fluid supply means to each of said brush roller moving means and flicker bar moving means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means for controlling operation of said brush roller moving means and flicker bar moving means.
- 37. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 36 in which at least one of said brush roller moving means and flicker bar moving means includes pneumatically controlled means and at least one of said brush roller moving means and flicker bar moving means includes hydraulically controlled means, a main hydraulic fluid supply and a main pressurized air supply, and said modules for each printing unit including means for connecting said hydraulic fluid and pressurized air supplies to said respective hydraulically controlled means and said pneumatically controlled means for the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means for controlling the supply of hydraulic fluid and pressurized air thereto.
- 38. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising a cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a brush roller, means for moving said brush roller in a rotary direction, means for moving said brush roller laterally into and out of engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter on said cylinder, a separate control module associated with each said printing unit, a master controller remote from said control modules, and said control module for each printing unit each being connected to said master controller and including means selectively operable under the control of said master controller for controlling operation of each of said brush roller moving means.
- 39. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 38 in which said cleaning devices each include means for directing cleaning fluid onto the associated printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof, a main cleaning fluid supply, and said control modules each include means for connecting said cleaning fluid supply to said cleaning fluid directing means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and means operable under the control of said master controller for controlling communication of cleaning fluid from said cleaning fluid supply to the directing means of the respective cleaning devices.
- 40. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 39 in which the brush roller of each cleaning device has outwardly extending bristles, and each cleaning device includes a flicker bar and means for effecting relative movement of the flicker bar and brush roller between first relative positions in which said flicker bar is in removed relation to the bristles of the brush roller and second relative positions in which flicker bar is in engaging relation with the bristles of the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are flexed to effect removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried by the bristles, and each said module including control valve means operated under the control of said master controller for controlling operation of said flicker bar and brush roller relative movement effecting means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit.
- 41. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 38 in which said brush roller means are fluid operated, main fluid supply means, and said control module for each printing unit includes means for connecting said main fluid supply means to the brush roller moving means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and control valve means operated under the control of said master controller for controlling operation of said brush roller moving means.
- 42. The printing cylinder cleaning system of claim 38 in which said cleaning devices each include means for directing cleaning fluid onto the associated printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof, a main cleaning fluid supply, said control modules each include means for connecting said cleaning fluid supply to said cleaning fluid directing means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and being operable under the control of said master controller for controlling communication of cleaning fluid from said cleaning fluid supply to the directing means of the respective cleaning devices, said brush roller means being fluid operated, main fluid supply means, and said control module for each printing unit includes means for connecting said main fluid supply means to the brush roller moving means of the cleaning devices of the respective printing unit and control valve means operated under the control of said master controller for controlling operation of said brush roller moving means.
- 43. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising
- a separate cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a rotatably driven brush roller mounted for selected engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter thereon and means for selectively directing cleaning fluid onto said printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof,
- a cleaning fluid supply,
- a separate control module associated with each printing unit, said control modules each including selectively operable pump means, means connecting said control module pump means to said cleaning fluid supply and means connecting said control module pump means to the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit whereby selected operation of said pump means causes a predetermined flow of cleaning fluid to said cleaning devices fluid directing means, and
- said pump means for each module including a pair of solvent supply positive displacement pumps each for directing solvent to a respective one of the first and second printing cylinder cleaning devices fluid directing means and a pair of water supply positive displacement pumps each for directing water to a respective one of the first and second printing cylinder cleaning devices fluid directing means.
- 44. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising
- a separate cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a rotatably driven brush roller having outwardly extending bristles mounted for selected engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter thereon, means for moving said brush roller of each cleaning device into and out of engagement with the respective printing cylinder, and means for selectively directing cleaning fluid onto said printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof,
- a cleaning fluid supply,
- a separate control module associated with each printing unit, said control modules each including selectively operable pump means, means connecting said control module pump means to said cleaning fluid supply and means connecting said control module pump means to the cleaning devices of the associated printing unit whereby selected operation of said pump means causes a predetermined flow of cleaning fluid to said cleaning devices fluid directing means, and
- said cleaning devices each further including a flicker bar and means for effecting relative movement of the flicker bar and brush roller between first relative positions in which said flicker bar is in removed relation to the bristles of the brush roller and second relative positions in which said flicker bar is in engaging relation with the bristles of the brush roller such that the bristles thereof pass over the flicker bar and are flexed to effect removal of cleaning fluid and foreign matter carried by the bristles, said relative movement effecting means of each cleaning device being operable for moving said flicker bar and brush roller to said second relative positions in response to movement of said brush roller to a position out of engagement with the printing cylinder.
- 45. A printing cylinder cleaning system for a printing line having a plurality of printing units each having first and second printing cylinders comprising
- a separate cleaning device associated with each printing cylinder, said cleaning devices each including a rotatably driven brush roller mounted for selected engagement with the associated printing cylinder for removing inks and foreign matter thereon and means for selectively directing cleaning fluid onto said printing cylinder for facilitating cleaning thereof,
- a cleaning solvent supply,
- a water supply,
- a separate control module associated with each printing unit, said control modules each including a first cyclicly operated positive displacement pump for directing a predetermined quantity of cleaning solvent during each cycle of operation, means connecting said control module to said cleaning solvent supply and means connecting said control module to cleaning devices of the associated printing unit, said first positive displacement pump being selectively operable for directing a controlled predetermined flow of cleaning solvent to the cleaning device fluid directing means of at least one of said cleaning device, and
- said control modules each further including a second cyclicly operated positive displacement pump for directing a predetermined quantity of water during each cycle of operation, means connecting said control module to said water supply, and said second positive displacement pump being selectively operable for directing a controlled predetermined flow of water to the fluid directing means of at least one of said cleaning devices.
