Claims
- 1. A sheet processing apparatus which processes a sheet manually set therein comprising:
- sheet processing means for processing a sheet;
- sheet transport means for moving the sheet adjacent and past said sheet processing means;
- sheet detection means for detecting one of a presence and an absence of the sheet set in said sheet transport means;
- an interface for receiving from a host device a first time parameter representing a desired time duration for positioning the sheet in said sheet transport means;
- first time setting means for setting a first time duration in response to said first time parameter received by said interface from the host device; and
- timing means for initiating said sheet transport means to move the sheet to said sheet processing means after the first time duration set by said first time setting means has elapsed after said sheet detection means detects the presence of the sheet.
- 2. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
- second time setting means for variably setting a second time duration as a maximum wait time for sheet insertion.
- 3. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 2, comprising warning means for producing an error signal if no sheet is detected within said second time duration.
- 4. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 2, wherein said first timing means comprises at least a first selectively programmable interval timer configured to count the first time duration and a second timer configured to count the second duration.
- 5. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 2, wherein said interface receives from the host computer various commands from a set of predetermined commands, command data, and other data strings therefrom, said commands comprising at least one command being a time setting command comprising said first time duration; wherein the sheet processing apparatus further comprises:
- analyzing means for interpreting received data and commands;
- memory means for reading and storing interpreted command data indicating at least said first time duration as specified by said first time setting command and providing said data to said timing means for measuring the time period specified by storing command data; and
- control means for operating said timing means for confirming detection of the sheet and sheet positioning, and for initiating sheet transport and printing.
- 6. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 5, wherein lengths of said first and second time durations are set by a single time setting command.
- 7. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 5, wherein said memory means comprises:
- first memory means for reading command data defining said first time duration interval as specified by the time setting command and storing it;
- second memory means for reading command data defining said second time duration as specified by the time setting command and storing it; and further comprising:
- first timer means for measuring elapsed time based on the data stored in the first memory means;
- second timer means for measuring elapsed time based on the data stored in the second memory means;
- first activation means for starting the second timer means and for confirming whether or not the sheet was inserted within the specified second time interval for sheet insertion; and
- second activation means for starting the first timer means.
- 8. the sheet processing apparatus of claim 5, wherein:
- said time setting command comprises a two-byte length parameter;
- said analyzing means is configured to interpret one byte of said two byte parameter as indicating the length of said second time interval for sheet insertion and the second byte of said two byte parameter as indicating the length of said first time interval for sheet positioning; and
- said memory means stores the interpreted parameters.
- 9. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 8, further comprising:
- calculation means for calculating at least said first time interval based on the stored parameters; and
- confirmation means connected to the sheet detection means for checking whether or not sheet has been inserted within time intervals calculated by the calculation means from the start of waiting for sheet insertion.
- 10. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 5, wherein said sheet transport means has a transport section open-close mechanism to open and close a sheet transfer path and a sheet transport roller, and a sheet and transport control means for confirming the positioning of the sheet and then operating the transport section open-close mechanism, holding the sheet so that it can be transported, and driving the sheet transport roller.
- 11. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 4, wherein said first programmable timer is configured to select a different timing interval in response to receipt of a host computer command.
- 12. The sheet processing apparatus of claim 1, wherein said timing means comprises at least a first selectively programmable interval timer configured to count said first time duration and further comprising:
- an interface connected to a host computer fort receiving various commands therefrom, at least one command being a time setting command for setting the length of said first time duration; and
- memory means for storing data indicating said first time duration as specified by said time setting command and providing said data to said timing means for measuring the time period specified by the stored data.
- 13. The sheet processing apparatus according to claim 3, further comprising:
- inhibiting means in accordance with said second time setting means for inhibiting the production of said error signal by said warning means when said second time duration is set to zero.
- 14. The sheet processing apparatus according to claim 6, wherein:
- said first time duration is set by 100 millisecond unit; and
- said second time duration is set by one minute unit.
- 15. A sheet processing apparatus which processes a sheet manually set thereto comprising:
- sheet processing means for processing a sheet;
- sheet transport means for moving the sheet adjacent and past said sheet processing means;
- sheet detection means for detecting one of a presence and an absence of the sheet set to said sheet transport means; and
- means for controlling said sheet transport means in accordance with said sheet detection means to initiate the sheet transportation after a desired time for positioning the sheet in said sheet transport means, determined in accordance with a control command received from a host device, has elapsed after said sheet detection means detects the presence of the sheet.
- 16. A method of controlling processing a sheet in a sheet processing apparatus, comprising the steps of:
- positioning the sheet during which the sheet processing apparatus will not process the sheet to allow for sheet positioning;
- detecting by the sheet processing apparatus one of a presence and an absence of the sheet set in the sheet processing apparatus;
- measuring by the sheet processing apparatus a first time duration beginning with when the presence of the sheet is detected;
- reconfirming by the sheet processing apparatus the presence of the sheet after said measuring step; and
- initiating sheet transport through a sheet processing mechanism for processing the sheet when the first time interval exceeds the first duration and when the sheet is reconfirmed in said reconfirmation step.
- 17. The control method of claim 16, further comprising the steps of:
- selecting the length of a second time duration that defines a maximum time period allowed for sheet insertion;
- detecting one of the presence and absence of sheet inserted in the sheet processing apparatus while measuring said second time duration; and
- producing an error signal when no sheet is detected within said second time duration.
- 18. The control method of claim 16, further comprising the steps of:
- confirming one of the presence and absence of sheet after said first time interval has elapsed; and
- transporting the sheet for processing when determining that sheet is present.
- 19. The control method of claim 18, wherein the steps of detecting one of the presence and absence of sheet and measuring said first time interval are repeated when no sheet is detected as being present.
- 20. The control method of claim 16, further comprising the steps of:
- receiving various predefined command data and other data strings from a host computer at least one command being a time setting command for setting the length of said first time duration;
- interpreting the received data and commands;
- storing interpreted data indicating the length of at least said first time duration as specified by a time setting command; and
- measuring a first time period specified by stored command data.
- 21. The control method of claim 20, wherein said step of storing comprises the steps of:
- storing data defining the length of said time duration as specified by the time setting command in a first memory location;
- storing data defining the length of said first time duration as specified by the time setting command in a second memory location; and further comprising the step of:
- starting a timer for measuring elapsed time for insertion of sheet based on the data stored in the second memory location;
- detecting whether or not the sheet is inserted during said second time duration; and
- starting another timer for measuring elapsed time based on the data stored in the first memory location upon sheet detection.
- 22. A method of controlling processing a sheet in a processing apparatus, comprising the steps of:
- manually inserting the sheet in the sheet processing apparatus;
- positioning the sheet during which the sheet processing apparatus will not process the sheet;
- detecting by the sheet processing apparatus the presence or absence of the sheet set in the sheet processing apparatus;
- measuring by the sheet processing apparatus a first time duration beginning with when the presence of the sheet is detected;
- reconfirming by the sheet processing apparatus the presence of the sheet after said measuring step; and
- initiating sheet transport through a sheet processing mechanism for processing the sheet when the first time interval exceeds the first duration and when the second sheet is reconfirmed in said reconfirmation step.
- 23. The controls method of claim 22, further comprising the steps of:
- receiving various predetermined command data and other data strings from a host computer at least one command being a time setting command for setting the length of said first time duration;
- interpreting the received data and commands;
- storing interpreted data indicating the length of at least said first time duration as specified by a time setting command; and
- measuring a first time period specified by stored command data.
- 24. A printing device which prints a recording sheet manually set therein comprising:
- printing means for printing on the recording sheet;
- sheet transport means for moving the recording sheet adjacent and past said sheet processing means;
- sheet detection means for detecting one of a presence and an absence of the recording sheet set in said transport means;
- an interface for receiving from a host device a first time parameter representing a desired time duration for positioning the recording sheet in said sheet transport means;
- first time setting means setting a first time duration in response to said first time parameter received by said interface from the host device;
- second time setting means for variably setting a second time duration as a maximum wait time for recording sheet insertion;
- timing means for initiating said sheet transport means to move the recording sheet to said sheet processing means after the first time duration set by said first time setting means has elapsed after said sheet detection means detects the presence of the recording sheet;
- warning means for producing an error signal if no recording sheet is detected within said second time duration; and
- inhibiting means in accordance with said second time setting means for inhibiting the production of said error signal by said warning means when said second time duration is set to zero.
- 25. A printing device which prints a recording sheet manually set therein comprising:
- printing means for printing on the recording sheet;
- sheet transport means for moving the recording sheet adjacent and past said sheet processing means;
- sheet detection means for detecting one of a presence and an absence of the recording sheet set in said sheet transport means;
- an interface for receiving from a host device a first time parameter representing a desired time duration for positioning the recording sheet in said sheet transport means;
- first time setting means for setting a first time duration in response to said first time parameter received by said interface from the host device;
- second time setting means for variably setting a second time duration as a maximum wait time for recording sheet insertion; and
- timing means for initiating said sheet transport means to move the recording sheet to said sheet processing means after the first time duration set by said first time setting means has elapsed after said sheet detection means detects the presence of the recording sheet;
- wherein:
- said first time duration is set by 100 millisecond unit; and
- said second time duration is set by one minute unit.
