Claims
- 1. The method of making a printing member for a press without dampening comprising the steps of:
- coating a conductive metal body with an organic plastic layer having an exposed surface which is highly oleophobic;
- spacing a movable point electrode opposite selected image points on said surface, and
- establishing a potential difference between said electrode and said conductive metal body to produce spark discharges between said electrode and said printing member at said image points without contacting said surface and without penetrating through said body so that there is thermal transformation of said surface structure which renders said surface oleophilic at said image points.
- 2. The method defined in claim 1 and including the step of forming said body of a metal selected from the group consisting of steel and aluminum.
- 3. The method defined in claim 1 and including the step of forming said layer of an inorganic plastic material selected from the group consisting of silicon and fluoropolymer.
- 4. The method defined in claim 1 and including the steps of moving said electrode and printing member relative to one another and applying momentary voltage pulses image-wise between said electrode and said conductive metal body so that a multiplicity of image-representing oleophilic spots are formed on the otherwise oleophobic exposed surface.
- 5. The method defined in claim 1 and including the step of forming said body as a flexible member which can be engaged around a print cylinder.
- 6. The method defined in claim 1 and including the step of forming said body as a rigid cylinder whose cylindrical surface carries said plastic layer.
- 7. A printing member for a press without dampening comprising
- a conductive metal body,
- an organic plastic layer coated onto a surface of said body, said layer having an exposed surface whose structure renders said surface highly oleophobic, said surface structure being transformed by heat at selected image points on said surface without contacting said surface and without penetrating through said body thereby rendering said surface oleophilic at said image points.
- 8. The printing member defined in claim 7 wherein said body is of a metal selected from the group consisting of steel and aluminum.
- 9. The printing member defined in claim 7 wherein said plastic layer is an organic polymer selected from the group consisting of silicon and a fluoropolymer.
- 10. The printing member defined in claim 7 wherein said body is a flexible member which can extend around a print cylinder.
- 11. The printing member defined in claim 7 wherein said body is a rigid cylinder whose cylindrical surface carries said plastic layer.
