Claims
- 1. In a paint batching apparatus comprising a dispensing station, said dispensing station comprising storage means for storing the paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, nozzle means for dispensing all of the paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned therebelow, pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said storage means to said nozzle means, and volumetric control means for controlling the operations of said nozzle means and said pump means for dispensing predetermined, fixed volumetric amounts of said paint ingredients according to the particular color-formula of paint to be formed, the improvement comprising:
- said dispensing station further comprising weighing means for independently weighing the dispensing of each one of the paint-ingredients dispensed by said volumetric control means, in order to determine the accuracy of said predetermined volumetric dispensing of the paint ingredients by said volumetric control means, said volumetric control means dispensing said predetermined, fixed amount of said paint ingredients independent of said weighing means.
- 2. The improvement according to claim 1, wherein said means for weighing comprises a vertically-movable weighing platform upon which rests the paint can to be weighed, means for moving said weighing platform; said weighing platform being located below said nozzle means for elevating a can theretowards for the dispensing into the can; and at least one scale-head having a specified resolution operatively coupled to said weighing platform for determining the actual weight of the ingredient dispensed into the can.
- 3. The improvement according to claim 2, wherein said station is a tint-dispensing station where liquid colorants are dispensed into a paint can; said means for weighing comprises a first scale-head defining a first resolution, and a second scale-head defining a second resolution of greater resolution than said first resolution; scale-head control means for alternatively coupling one of said first scale-head to said weighing platform and said second scale-head to said weighing platform; said scale-head control means coupling said first scale-head to said platform for a dispensing a first amount, and coupling said second scale-head to said platform for a dispensing a second amount.
- 4. The improvement according to claim 3, wherein said first resolution is within 0.10 gram, and said second resolution is within 0.01 gram.
- 5. The improvement according to claim 2, wherein said station is a base-dispensing station where only liquid base is dispensed.
- 6. The improvement according to claim 5, further comprising another, tint-dispensing station comprising another storage means for storing the colorant paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, another nozzle means for dispensing the paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned therebelow, another pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said another storage means to said another nozzle means, and another control means for controlling the operations of said another nozzle means and another pump means for dispensing desired volumetric amounts of each ones of said colorant paint ingredients, and another means for weighing the dispensing of each one of the paint-ingredients.
- 7. The improvement according to claim 6, further comprising conveyer means for conveying cans between said tint-dispensing station and said base-dispensing station, said base-dispensing station being located downstream of said tint-dispensing station along said conveyer means.
- 8. The improvement according to claim 6, wherein said tint-dispensing station's means for weighing comprises a first scale-head defining a first resolution, and a second scale-head defining a second resolution of greater resolution than said first resolution; and scale-head control means for alternatively coupling one of said first scale-head to said weighing platform and said second scale-head to said weighing platform; said scale-head control means coupling said first scale-head to said platform for a dispensing of a first amount, and coupling said second scale-head to said platform for a dispensing of a second amount.
- 9. The improvement according to claim 8, wherein said first resolution is within 0.10 gram, and said second resolution is within 0.01 gram.
- 10. The improvement according to claim 9, wherein said scale-head of said base-dispensing station's means for weighing has a resolution of 1.0 gram.
- 11. The improvement according to claim 2, further comprising conveyer means for conveying a paint can to said dispensing station at a location directly below said nozzle means, and for conveying the can from said nozzle means after the paint ingredients have been dispensed at said dispensing station; said platform comprising a first and a second vertically-mounted side plate, each said side plate defining an upper edge surface, said side plates being arranged parallel to each other and lying in parallel planes parallel to the length and movement of said conveyer means, and plate means for connecting said first and second side plates to said means for moving said platform for reciprocal movement in a vertical plane; said conveyer means defining a pair of lateral side edges extending parallel to the length and movement thereof; said side plates being juxtapositionally located adjacent opposite ones of said pair of lateral side edges of said conveyer means, such that the lateral spacing between said side plates is greater then the width of said conveyer means for clearing said conveyer means; said upper edge surfaces supporting thereon a paint can when said means for moving elevates said side plates above the plane of said conveyer means, to thereby raise the paint can to a location near and under said nozzle means.
- 12. The improvement according to claim 11, wherein each said side plate further comprises a first limit-stop extending upwardly from a rearward section of the respective said upper edge surface which serves as a stop to the movement of the paint can when said side plate is partially raised in order to locate such can at the dispensing station under said nozzle means thereof, said first limit-stop defining the placement of a larger-size paint can on said side plates; each said side plate also comprising a second vertically-slidably limit-stop extending upwardly from another rearward section of the respective said upper edge surface which serves as a stop to the movement of a smaller-sized paint can, said another rearward section being located forward and upstream of said rearward section from which projects said first limit-stop, so that when said side plate is partially raised in order to locate such can at the dispensing station under said nozzle means thereof, said second limit-stop defines the placement of such smaller-sized paint can on said side plates; each said side plate further comprising channel means in which the respective said second limit-stop may at least partially slide, and means for biassing said second limit-stop into a projecting position where it projects outwardly beyond said upper edge surface, whereby, when a larger-sized can is supported on said upper edge surfaces, the bottom of the can will cause the depression of each said second limit stop into the respective said channel means as the can is lifted to an elevated position.
- 13. The improvement according to claim 12, wherein each said limit-stop defines an upper-most end, said uppermost end of each said second limit-stop lying below said uppermost end of the corresponding said first limit-stop of the respective said upper edge surface, whereby larger-sized paint cans will clear said second limit-stops.
- 14. The improvement according to claim 13, wherein each said another rearward section of each said side plate from projects a respective said second limit-stop is vertically recessed from said rearward section from which projects the respective said first limit stop.
- 15. A method of quality-control checking of the dispensings of paint ingredients in a paint batching machine of the paint being formulated, which paint batching machine comprises a liquid-dispensing station having nozzle means for dispensing the liquid ingredients into a paint can positioned thereunder, supply means for storing the liquid paint ingredients to be dispensed, pump means for dispensing the liquid ingredients from the supply means to the nozzle means, said method comprising:
- (a) positioning a paint can under the nozzle means of the dispensing station;
- (b) dispensing a specified, predetermined, fixed volumetric amount of one liquid ingredient through the nozzle means into the paint can;
- (c) after said (b), and independently of said step (b), determining the weight of the total amount of said one liquid ingredient dispensed into the paint can;
- (d) comparing the weight obtained from said step (c) to a nominal weight value, which nominal weight value is part of a color-formula for the paint-color formulated;
- (e) determining the difference between the nominal value and the weight from said step (c); and
- (f) deciding the acceptance of said difference from said step (e).
- 16. The method according to claim 15, further comprising repeating said steps (b) through (f) for each additional liquid paint ingredient dispensed at the dispensing station.
- 17. The method according to claim 15, wherein said step (c) comprises obtaining the weight to a specific resolution, whereby for each liquid ingredient dispensed above a critical nominal-weight value, a first said resolution is used, and for each liquid ingredient dispensed below the critical nominal-weight value, said resolution is in a second, much finer one.
- 18. The method according to claim 17, wherein said second resolution is of the order of 1/10th the resolution as said first resolution.
- 19. The method according to claim 18, wherein said critical nominal weight is substantially 6.8 grams.
- 20. The method according to claim 19, wherein said first resolution 0.1 gram, and said second resolution is 0.01 gram.
- 21. The method according to claim 15, wherein said step (e) comprises determining if said amount dispensed is underweight, and if it is overweight; said method further comprising repeating said step (b) for said one ingredient at least one more time in order to provide said one ingredient in an amount that is acceptable by said step (f), when said step (e) determines said underweight dispensing.
- 22. The method according to claim 21, wherein said method further comprises repeating said steps (c) through (f), in sequence after each said step of repeating said step (b), until said step (f) decides that the total amount of said one ingredient dispensed from all said steps (b) carried out lie within acceptable resolution levels.
- 23. The method according to claim 21, said method further comprising recalculating the paint formula for the specific paint can positioned at the dispensing station during said step (a) when said step (e) determines an overweight dispensing of said one ingredient, in order to change the dispensings of subsequent paint ingredients to be dispensed to take into consideration the overage of the dispensing of said one liquid ingredient, in order to arrive at the original desired and intended color and tint for the paint of the paint can positioned during said step (a).
- 24. The method according to claim 23, wherein said method further comprises rejecting the paint can positioned during said step (a) when a recalculated formula was not achieved.
- 25. The method according to claim 16, wherein each said step (c) comprises obtaining the weight of each total amount of liquid ingredient dispensed to a specific resolution, whereby for each liquid ingredient dispensed above a critical nominal-weight value for that specific respective liquid ingredient, a first said resolution is used, and for each liquid ingredient dispensed below the critical nominal-weight value, said resolution is a second, much finer one.
- 26. The method according to claim 16, wherein each said step (e) comprises determining if said total amount dispensed for the respective said liquid ingredient is underweight, and if it is overweight; said method further comprising repeating said step (b) for said respective ingredient at least one more time in order to provide said respective ingredient in an amount that is acceptable by said step (f), when said step (e) determines said underweight dispensing.
- 27. The method according to claim 26, wherein said method further comprises repeating said steps (c) through (f), in sequence after each said step of repeating said step (b), until said step (f) decides that the total amount of said respective ingredient dispensed from all said steps (b) carried out lie within acceptable resolution levels.
- 28. The method according to claim 15, wherein said step (a) comprises lifting the paint can on a weighing platform, which weighing platform is used during said step (c).
- 29. The method according to claim 15, wherein the paint batching machine further comprises another dispensing station for dispensing liquid base thereat, said another dispensing station having another nozzle means for dispensing the liquid base ingredients into a paint can positioned thereunder, another supply means for storing the liquid paint ingredients to be dispensed, another pump means for dispensing the liquid ingredients from the another supply means to the another nozzle means, said steps (a) through (f) are performed for the dispensings of liquid colorants at the dispensing station; said method further comprising positioning the paint can from the dispensing station after said step (f) at said another dispensing station, and repeating said steps (b) through (f) at said another dispensing station for liquid base.
- 30. The method according to claim 29, wherein said step (a) comprises conveying the can to said dispensing station, and said step of positioning the paint can at said another station comprises conveying the paint can from said dispensing station to said another dispensing station.
- 31. The method according to claim 15, further comprising:
- (g) updating the amount of said one liquid ingredient in said supply means by deducting the value obtained from said step (c) from the previous amount.
- 32. In a paint batching apparatus comprising a dispensing station, said dispensing station comprising a plurality of storage means for storing paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, said paint ingredients comprising a plurality of different liquid colorants, one said liquid colorant being contained in one said storage means; a common, dispensing nozzle for dispensing the liquid colorants of said paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned below said nozzle; pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said plurality of storage means to said common nozzle; and volumetric control means for controlling the operations of said nozzle and said pump means for dispensing predetermined, fixed volumetric amounts of said liquid colorants according to the particular color-formula of paint to be formed, said paint formula indicating the volumetric amounts of each said liquid colorant to be dispensed, wherein the improvement comprises:
- said dispensing station further comprising weighing means for independently weighing each said liquid colorant dispensed by said volumetric control means in order to determine the accuracy of the volumetric dispensing of said liquid colorants by said volumetric control means.
- 33. The improvement according to claim 32, wherein said means for independently weighing comprises a vertically-movable weighing platform upon which rests a paint can, means for moving said weighing platform, said weighing platform being located below said nozzle for elevating a can theretowards for the dispensing into the can; and at least one scale-head having a specified resolution operatively coupled to said weighing platform for determining the actual weight of the respective liquid colorant dispensed into the can.
- 34. The improvement according to claim 33, wherein said station is a tint-dispensing station where liquid colorants are dispensed into a paint can; said means for weighing comprises a first scale-head defining a first resolugion, and a second scale-head defining a second resolution of greater resolution than said first resolution; scale-head control means for alternatively coupling one of said first scale-head to said weighing platform and said second scale-head to said weighing platform; said scale-head control means coupling said first scale-head to said platform for a first specified amount, and coupling said second scale-head to said platform for a second specified amount.
- 35. The improvement according to claim 34, wherein said first resolution is within 0.10 gram, and said second resolution is within 0.01 gram.
- 36. The improvement according to claim 33, further comprising conveyer means for conveying a paint can to said dispensing station at a location directly below said nozzle, and for conveying the can from said nozzle after all of the paint ingredients have been dispensed at said dispensing station; said platform comprising a first and a second vertically-mounted side plate each defining an upper edge surface, said side plates being arranged parallel to each other and lying in parallel planes parallel to the length and movement of said conveyer means, and plate means for connecting said first and second side plates to said means for moving said platform for reciprocal movement in a vertical plane; said conveyer means defining a pair of lateral side edges extending parallel to the length and movement thereof; said side plates being juxtapositionally located adjacent opposite ones of said pair of lateral side edges of said conveyer means, such that the lateral spacing between said side plates is greater than the width of said conveyer means; said upper edge surfaces supporting thereon a paint can when said means for moving elevates said side plates above the plane of said conveyer means, to thereby raise the paint can to a location near and under said nozzle.
- 37. The improvement according to claim 36, wherein each said side plate further comprises a first limit-stop extending upwardly from a rearward section of the respective said upper edge surface which serves as a stop to the movement of the paint can when said side plate is partially raised in order to locate such can at the dispensing station under said nozzle thereof, said first limit-stop defining the placement of a larger-size paint can on said side plates; each said side plate also comprising a second vertically-slidably limit-stop extending upwardly from another rearward section of the respective said upper edge surface which serves as a stop to the movement of a smaller-sized paint can, said another rearward section being located forward and upstream of said rearward section from which projects said first limit-stop, so that when said side plate is partially raised in order to locate such can at the dispensing station under said nozzle thereof, said second limit-stop defines the placement of such smaller-sized paint can on said side plates; each said side plate further comprising channel means in which the respective said second limit-stop may at least partially slide, and means for biasing said second limit-stop into a projecting position where it projects outwardly beyond said upper edge surface, whereby, when a larger-sized can is supported on said upper edge surfaces, the bottom of the can will cause the depression of each said second limit stop into the respective said channel means as the can is lifted to an elevated position.
- 38. In a paint batching apparatus comprising a dispensing station, said dispensing station comprising storage means for storing the paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, nozzle means for dispensing the paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned therebelow, pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said storage means to said nozzle means, and control means for controlling the operations of said nozzle means and said pump means for dispensing desired volumetric amounts of each ones of said paint ingredients according to the particular color-formula of paint to be formed, the improvement comprising:
- said dispensing station further comprising means for weighing the dispensing of each one of the paint-ingredients;
- said means for weighing comprising a vertically-movable weighing platform upon which rests the paint can to be weighed, means for moving said weighing platform, said weighing platform being located below said nozzle means for elevating a can theretowards for the dispensing into the can; and at least one scale-head having a specified resolution operatively coupled to said weighing platform for determining the actual weight of the ingredient dispensed into the can;
- said station being a tint-dispensing station where liquid colorants are dispensed into a paint can; said means for weighing comprises a first scale-head defining a first resolution, and a second scale-head defining a second resolution of greater resolution than said first resolution; scale-head control means for alternatively coupling one of said first scale-head to said weighing platform and said second scale-head to said weighing platform depending upon the ingredient to be dispensed; said scale-head control means coupling said first scale-head to said platform for a dispensing above a first value, and coupling said second scale-head to said platform for a dispensing a second value.
- 39. In a paint batching apparatus comprising a dispensing station, said dispensing station comprising storage means for storing the paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, nozzle means for dispensing the paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned therebelow, pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said storage means to said nozzle means, and control means for controlling the operations of said nozzle means and said pump means for dispensing desired volumetric amounts of each ones of said paint ingredients according to the particular color-formula of paint to be formed, the improvement comprising:
- said dispensing station further comprising means for weighing the dispensing of each one of the paint-ingredients;
- said station being a base-dispensing station where only liquid base is dispensed; and
- further comprising another, tint-dispensing station comprising another storage means for storing the colorant paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, another nozzle means for dispensing the paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned therebelow, another pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said another storage means to said another nozzle means, and another control means for controlling the operations of said another nozzle means and another pump means for dispensing desired volumetric amounts of each ones of said colorant paint ingredients, and another means for weighing the dispensing of each one of the paint-ingredients for quality-control of the paint.
- 40. In a paint batching apparatus comprising a dispensing station, said dispensing station comprising storage means for storing the paint ingredients for dispensing into a paint can, nozzle means for dispensing the paint ingredients directly into the paint can positioned therebelow, pump means for pumping the paint ingredients from said storage means to said nozzle means, and control means for controlling the operations of said nozzle means and said pump means for dispensing desired volumetric amounts of each ones of said paint ingredients according to the particular color-formula of paint to be formed, the improvement comprising:
- said dispensing station further comprising means for weighing the dispensing of each one of the paint-ingredients;
- said means for weighing comprising a vertically-movable weighing platform upon which rests the paint can to be weighed, means for moving said weighing platform, said weighing platform being located below said nozzle means for elevating a can theretowards for the dispensing into the can; and at least one scale-head having a specified resolution operatively coupled to said weighing platform for determining the actual weight of the ingredient dispensed into the can;
- conveyer means for conveying a paint can to said dispensing station at a location directly below said nozzle means, and for conveying the can from said nozzle means after all of the paint ingredients have been dispensed at said dispensing station; said platform comprising a first and a second vertically-mounted side plate each defining an upper edge surface, said side plates being arranged parallel to each other and lying in parallel planes parallel to the length and movement of said conveyer means, and plate means for connecting said first and second side plates to said means for moving said platform for reciprocal movement in a vertical plane; said conveyer means defining a pair of lateral side edges extending parallel to the length and movement thereof; said side plates being juxtapositionally located adjacent opposite ones of said pair of lateral side edges of said conveyer means, such that the lateral spacing between said side plates is greater than the width of said conveyer means; said upper edge surfaces supporting thereon a paint can when said means for moving elevates said side plates above the plane of said conveyer means, to thereby raise the paint can to a location near and under said nozzle means.
- 41. A method of quality-control checking of the dispensings of paint ingredients in a paint batching machine of the paint being formulated, which paint batching machine comprises a liquid-dispensing station having nozzle means for dispensing the liquid ingredients into a paint can positioned thereunder, supply means for storing the liquid paint ingredients to be dispensed, pump means for dispensing the liquid ingredients from the supply means to the nozzle means, said method comprising:
- (a) positioning a paint can under the nozzle means of the dispensing station;
- (b) dispensing a specified volumetric amount of one liquid ingredient through the nozzle means into the paint can;
- (c) after said (b), determining the weight of the total amount of said one liquid ingredient dispensed into the paint can;
- (d) comparing the weight obtained from said step (c) to a nominal value, which nominal value is part of a color-formula for the paint-color formulated;
- (e) determining the difference between the nominal value and the weight from said step (c); and
- (f) deciding the acceptance of said difference from said step (e);
- said step (c) comprising obtaining the weight to a specific resolution, whereby for each liquid ingredient dispensed above a critical nominal-weight value, a first said resolution is used, and for each liquid ingredient dispensed below the critical nominal-weight value, said resolution is in a second, much finer one.
- 42. A method of quality-control checking of the dispensings of paint ingredients in a paint batching machine of the paint being formulated, which paint batching machine comprises a liquid-dispensing station having nozzle means for dispensing the liquid ingredients into a paint can positioned thereunder, supply means for storing the liquid paint ingredients to be dispensed, pump means for dispensing the liquid ingredients from the supply means to the nozzle means, said method comprising:
- (a) positioning a paint can under the nozzle means of the dispensing station;
- (b) dispensing a specified volumetric amount of one liquid ingredient through the nozzle means into the paint can;
- (c) after said (b), determining the weight of the total amount of said one liquid ingredient dispensed into the paint can;
- (d) comparing the weight obtained from said step (c) to a nominal value, which nominal value is part of a color-formula for the paint-color formulated;
- (e) determining the difference between the nominal value and the weight from said step (c); and
- (f) deciding the acceptance of said difference from said step (e) for purposes of quality-control;
- said step (e) comprising determining if said amount dispensed is underweight, and if it is overweight; said method further comprising repeating said step (b) for said one ingredient at least one more time in order to provide said one ingredient in an amount that is acceptable by said step (f), when said step (e) determines said underweight dispensing;
- and further comprising recalculating the paint formula for the specific paint can positioned at the dispensing station during said step (a) when said step (e) determines an overweight dispensing of said one ingredient, in order to change the dispensings of subsequent paint ingredients to be dispensed to take into consideration the overage of the dispensing of said one liquid ingredient, in order to arrive at the original desired and intended color and tint for the paint of the paint can positioned during said step (a).
- 43. A method of quality-control checking of the dispensings of paint ingredients in a paint batching machine of the paint being formulated, which paint batching machine comprises a liquid-dispensing station having nozzle means for dispensing the liquid ingredients into a paint can positioned thereunder, supply means for storing the liquid paint ingredients to be dispensed, pump means for dispensing the liquid ingredients from the supply means to the nozzle means, said method comprising:
- (a) positioning a paint can under the nozzle means of the dispensing station;
- (b) dispensing a specified volumetric amount of one liquid ingredient through the nozzle means into the paint can;
- (c) after said (b), determining the weight of the total amount of said one liquid ingredient dispensed into the paint can;
- (d) comparing the weight obtained from said step (c) to a nominal value, which nominal value is part of a color-formula for the paint-color formulated;
- (e) determining the difference between the nominal value and the weight from said step (c); and
- (f) deciding the acceptance of said difference from said step (e) for purposes of quality-control;
- repeating said steps (b) through (f) for each additional liquid paint ingredient dispensed at the dispensing station;
- each said step (c) comprising obtaining the weight of each total amount of liquid ingredient dispensed to a specific resolution, whereby for each liquid ingredient dispensed above a critical nominal-weight value for that specific respective liquid ingredient, a first said resolution is used, and for each liquid ingredient dispensed below the critical nominal-weight value, said resolution is a second, much finer one.
