Claims
- 1. A method for injection molding articles, which comprises the steps of:feeding at least one molten material from an injection nozzle via at least one nozzle outlet to a mold cavity space of an injection mold through a mold gate substantially in line with said at least one nozzle outlet; and eliminating waste of said molten material during molding by positioning a thin, movable valve gating means with an orifice therein between the mold gate and said at least one nozzle outlet, and moving said valve gating means between a first position wherein said orifice communicates with said at least one nozzle outlet and mold gate and permits the flow of molten material from said at least one outlet to said mold gate, and a second position blocking flow from said at least one nozzle outlet to said mold gate without said molten material being transferred by said thin, valve gating means, during movement of said valve gating means between said first and second positions.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein said positioning step comprises providing a valve blade having an orifice and said moving step comprises laterally sliding said valve blade.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the step of positioning comprises positioning a valve blade having a thickness of from 0.01 to 2 mm.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, including defining the thickness Tmin of said valve gating means by the equation:Tmin=4Vmin/(πD2) (1) where Tmin=minimal thickness;Vmin=minimal volume of orifice; and D=diameter of the orifice.
- 5. A method according to claim 2, including laterally sliding said blade in a direction substantially perpendicular to the mold gate.
- 6. A method according to claim 1, whereby plastic articles are formed with substantially no crystallinity in the area of the mold gate.
- 7. A method according to claim 1, whereby plastic articles are formed in said mold cavity space with a portion of said articles contacting said valve gating means, wherein the portion of said articles in contact with said valve gating means is substantially flat and substantially no knit lines are formed in said articles.
- 8. A method according to claim 2, including the step of moving said blade by actuation means located on at least one side of said blade.
- 9. A method according to claim 1, including the step of providing a limited clearance between the injection nozzle and mold which permits the valve gating means to move without leakage of plastic.
- 10. A method according to claim 1, including the step of lining each valve gating means orifice with a material which is different from the material of the valve gating means.
- 11. A method according to claim 1, including the step of providing a divider in the valve gating means orifice to provide a split orifice.
- 12. A method according to claim 2, including the step of carrying a plurality of blades by a frame.
- 13. A method according to claim 1 wherein said positioning step comprises providing a disk having at least one orifice between said nozzle outlet and said mold gate and said moving step comprising rotating said disc between said first and second positions.
- 14. A method according to claim 1 further comprising:said injection nozzle having a plurality of outlets; said positioning step comprising providing a rotatable member having a number of orifices equal to the number of said outlets; and said moving step comprising rotating said rotatable member between said first and second positions.
- 15. A method according to claim 1 further comprising:providing an injection nozzle having a plurality of passageways for accommodating different materials to be molded, each passageway terminating in a nozzle outlet; said positioning step comprising positioning a thin, laterally movable valve blade having a single orifice between the mold gate and said nozzle outlets; and sequentially feeding said different materials to said mold gate by moving said blade between positions where said orifice is sequentially aligned with different ones of said outlets.
- 16. A method according to claim 1 further comprising:providing an injection nozzle having a plurality of passageways for accommodating different materials to be molded, each passageway terminating in a nozzle outlet; said positioning step comprising positioning a thin, laterally movable valve blade having a plurality of orifices between the mold gate and said nozzle outlets; and sequentially feeding said different materials to said mold gate by moving said blade between positions where one of said orifices is sequentially aligned with different ones of said outlets.
- 17. A method according to claim 16 further comprising:simultaneously feeding different materials to said mold gate by moving said blade to a position where multiple ones of said orifices are aligned with multiple ones of said outlets.
