Claims
- 1. A process for separating fluidized cracking catalyst solids from hydrocarbon vapors comprising:
- (a) feeding a mixture of fluidized cracking catalyst solids and hydrocarbon vapors from a riser reactor into a separator having at least one semi-circular separating area;
- (b) deflecting the mixture off of a deflecting means in the separator into said at least one semi-circular separating area;
- (c) separating said mixture by inertial separation in said at least one semi-circular separating area into a hydrocarbon vapor product stream and a fluidized cracking catalyst stream;
- (d) withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product stream from said at least one semi-circular separating area through a horizontally upwardly disposed opening on the side of a horizontally disposed gas outlet which extends through said at least one separating area and parallel to said deflector in said at least one semi-circular separating area; and
- (e) withdrawing the fluidized cracking catalyst from said at least one semi-circular separating area.
- 2. A process as defined in claim 1 wherein step (d) comprises withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of said horizontally disposed gas outlet wherein said opening is oriented towards the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 135.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between -30.degree. and 75.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet.
- 3. A process as defined in claim 2 wherein step (d) comprises withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of said horizontally disposed gas outlet wherein said opening is oriented towards the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 90.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between 0.degree. and 30.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet.
- 4. A process as defined in claim 1 wherein step (d) comprises withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of said horizontally disposed gas outlet wherein said opening is oriented away from the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 135.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between -30.degree. and 75.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet.
- 5. A process as defined in claim 4 wherein step (d) comprises withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of said horizontally disposed gas outlet wherein said opening is oriented away from the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 90.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between 0.degree. and 30.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet.
- 6. A process as defined in claim 1 wherein the residence time of the hydrocarbon vapor in the separator is about 0.1 to about 0.2 sec.
- 7. A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said separating process removes from about 90% to about 99% of the fluidized cracking catalyst solids from the mixture of fluidized cracking catalyst solids and hydrocarbon vapors.
- 8. A process as defined in claim 7 wherein said separating process removes from about 95% to about 99% of the fluidized cracking catalyst solids from the mixture of fluidized cracking catalyst solids and hydrocarbon vapors.
- 9. A process for separating fluidized cracking catalyst solids from hydrocarbon vapors comprising:
- (a) feeding a mixture of fluidized cracking catalyst solids and hydrocarbon vapors from a riser reactor into a separator having at least one semi-circular separating area;
- (b) deflecting the mixture off of a deflecting means in the separator into said at least one semi-circular separating area;
- (c) separating said mixture by inertial separation in said at least one semi-circular separating area into a hydrocarbon vapor product stream and a fluidized cracking catalyst stream;
- (d) withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product stream from said at least one semi-circular separating area through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of a horizontally disposed gas outlet which extends through said at least one separating area and parallel to said deflector in said at least one semicircular separating area, wherein said opening is oriented towards the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 135.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between -30.degree. and 75.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet; and
- (e) removing the fluidized cracking catalyst from said at least one semi-circular separating area.
- 10. A process as defined in claim 9 wherein step (d) comprises withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product through horizontally disposed opening on the side of a horizontally disposed gas outlet wherein said opening is oriented towards the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 90.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between 0.degree. and 30.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet.
- 11. A process for separating fluidized cracking catalyst solids from hydrocarbon vapors comprising:
- (a) feeding a mixture of fluidized cracking catalyst solids and hydrocarbon vapors from a riser reactor into a separator having at least one semi-circular separating area;
- (b) deflecting the mixture off of a deflecting means in the separator into said at least one semi-circular separating area;
- (c) separating said mixture by inertial separation in said at least one semi-circular separating area into a hydrocarbon vapor product stream and a fluidized cracking catalyst stream;
- (d) withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product stream from said at least one semi-circular separating area through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of a horizontally disposed gas outlet which extends through said at least one separating area and parallel to said deflector in said at least one semicircular separating area, wherein said opening is oriented away from the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 135.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between -30.degree. and 75.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet; and
- (e) removing the fluidized cracking catalyst from said at least one semi-circular separating area.
- 12. A process as defined in claim 11 wherein step (d) comprises withdrawing said hydrocarbon vapor product through a horizontally disposed opening on the side of a horizontally disposed gas outlet wherein said opening is oriented away from the riser reactor with the lower edge of the opening at an angle between 30.degree. and 90.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet and the upper edge of the opening at an angle between 0.degree. and 30.degree. to the vertical center line of the outlet.
- 13. A process for separating fluidized cracking catalyst solids from a mixture of hydrocarbon vapors and fluidized cracking catalyst solids comprising utilizing a separator comprising (a) an upwardly directed gas-solids separator inlet; (b) a separator housing; (c) a means at the top of the separator housing for deflecting the mixture to substantially separate the fluidized cracking catalyst solids from the hydrocarbon vapors; (d) a solids outlet from the separator housing; and (e) a horizontally disposed vapor outlet means extending through the separator housing parallel to the means for deflecting the mixture having at least one horizontally upwardly disposed opening on the side of the gas outlet means.
