Claims
- 1. A hydrogenation catalyst composition consisting essentially of metallic ruthenium and a composite catalyst support material consisting essentially of a first oxidic material having a surface area greater than about 50 m.sup.2 /g which is at least partially surrounded by a second oxidic material having a surface area less than about 10 m.sup.2 /g.
- 2. The hydrogenation catalyst of claim 1 where the first oxidic material is selected from silica, alumina, and silica-alumina.
- 3. The hydrogenation catalyst of claim 1 where the second oxidic material is selected from the group consisting of metal oxides, semimetal oxides, and materials of the formula:
- x(LaONO.sub.3)+y (La.sub.2 O.sub.3)+z (La(NO.sub.3).sub.3)
- where x<1, z<1 and x+y+z=1.
- 4. The hydrogenation catalyst of claim 2 where the second oxidic material is a material of the formula:
- x(LaONO.sub.3)+y(La.sub.2 O.sub.3)+z(La(NO.sub.3).sub.3)
- where x<1, z<1 and x+y+z=.
- 5. The hydrogenation catalyst of claim 4 where the ruthenium in the hydrogenation catalyst is introduced onto the catalyst support material by a heat soaked acidic RuCl.sub.3 solution.
- 6. A hydrogenation catalyst composition consisting essentially of metallic ruthenium and a composite catalyst support material consisting essentially of a first oxidic material having a surface area greater than about 50 m.sup.2 /g which is selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, and silica-alumina and which is at least partially surrounded by a second oxidic material having a surface area less than about 10 m.sup.2 /g of a material of the formula:
- x (LaONO.sub.3)+y (La.sub.2 O.sub.3)+z (La(NO.sub.3).sub.3)
- where x<1, z<1 and x+y+z=1.
- 7. The hydrogenation catalyst of claim 6 where the first oxidic material is silica.
- 8. The hydrogenation catalyst of claim 7 where the ruthenium in the hydrogenation catalyst is introduced onto the catalyst support material by a heat soaked acidic RuCl.sub.3 solution.
