Claims
- 1. A process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, said process cartridge comprising:
- an electrophotographic photosensitive member;
- charging means for charging said electrophotographic photosensitive member;
- developing means for developing a latent image formed on said electrophotographic photosensitive member;
- a developing bias contact for applying a developing bias voltage to said developing means;
- a grounding contact for electrically grounding said electrophotographic photosensitive member; and
- a charging bias contact for applying a charging bias to said charging means,
- wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed adjacent a same end of said electrophotographic photosensitive member in a longitudinal direction thereof,
- wherein said developing bias contact and said grounding contact are disposed adjacent a side of said electrophotographic photosensitive member diametrically opposite, in a radial direction of said electrophotographic photosensitive member, from another side of said electrophotographic photosensitive member which said charging bias contact is disposed adjacent to, and
- wherein said process cartridge is inserted into the image forming apparatus in a direction such that said developing means trails said electrophotographic photosensitive member in a direction of peripheral movement of said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 2. A process cartridge according to claim 1, said process cartridge further comprising cleaning means, wherein said charging bias contact is disposed adjacent said cleaning means, relative to said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 3. A process cartridge according to claim 2, further comprising a drive transmitting portion for transmitting a rotational driving force to said electrophotographic photosensitive member, said drive transmitting portion being disposed adjacent to an opposite end of said electrophotographic photosensitive member, in a longitudinal direction thereof, that said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed adjacent to.
- 4. A process cartridge according to claim 3, wherein said drive transmitting portion includes a helical gear.
- 5. A process cartridge according to claim 2, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, are deviated relative to one another and relative to a plane perpendicular to the axial direction of said electrophotographic photosensitive member along a movement direction of said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 6. A process cartridge according to claim 1, further comprising a drive transmitting portion for transmitting a rotational driving force to said electrophotographic photosensitive member, said drive transmitting portion being disposed adjacent to an opposite end of said electrophotographic photosensitive member, in an axial direction thereof, that said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed adjacent to.
- 7. A process cartridge according to claim 6, wherein said drive transmitting portion includes a helical gear.
- 8. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, are deviated relative to one another and relative to a plane perpendicular to the axial direction of said electrophotographic photosensitive member along a movement direction of said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 9. A process cartridge according to claim 1, said process cartridge further comprising cleaning means, wherein said process cartridge is mounted in the main assembly of the image forming apparatus such that said cleaning means is disposed toward a front portion of the main assembly and said developing means is disposed toward a rear portion of the main assembly.
- 10. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, are not overlapped in a direction of insertion of said process cartridge into the main assembly of the image forming apparatus.
- 11. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said developing bias contact is spaced further from said electrophotographic photosensitive member than is said grounding contact.
- 12. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein an exposed area of said grounding contact is larger than an exposed area of said developing bias contact.
- 13. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein a configuration of said developing bias contact comprises a semi-spherical portion on a rectangular portion.
- 14. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein a configuration of said grounding contact is shaped like a boot.
- 15. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said grounding contact extends from a position overlapping a position of said electrophotographic photosensitive member in the axial direction thereof to a position beyond an overlapping position.
- 16. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said charging bias contact has a bent configuration.
- 17. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said developing bias contact and said grounding contact face a region of said electrophotographic photosensitive member having a photosensitive material applied thereon.
- 18. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed on a side of said process cartridge being a bottom surface when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly.
- 19. A process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus having a main assembly developing bias pin, a main assembly grounding pin, and a main assembly charging bias pin, said process cartridge comprising:
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum for forming a latent image thereon and a flange gear, disposed at one longitudinal end of said photosensitive drum, for receiving driving force from the main assembly to rotate said photosensitive drum when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly;
- a charging roller contactable to said photosensitive drum for charging said photosensitive drum;
- a developing sleeve for developing the latent image formed on said photosensitive drum;
- a cleaning blade for cleaning residual toner from said photosensitive drum;
- a developing bias contact having a substantially semi-circular shape projecting from a rectangular-parallelepiped-shaped portion for applying a developing bias voltage to said developing sleeve, said developing bias contact being disposed adjacent to said developing sleeve adjacent a first side of said photosensitive drum in a radial direction thereof and adjacent to another longitudinal end of said photosensitive drum opposite the one longitudinal end so as to be exposed at a bottom surface of said process cartridge, said developing bias contact being spaced from said photosensitive drum by a first spacing distance in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum toward said developing sleeve, wherein a line extending in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum from said developing bias contact to said photosensitive drum intersects a surface of said photosensitive drum at a position spaced a first overlapping distance from the another longitudinal end of said photosensitive drum;
- a grounding contact being substantially boot-shaped and being electrically connected to an inner circumferential surface of said photosensitive drum for electrically grounding said photosensitive drum, said grounding contact being disposed adjacent the first side of said photosensitive drum and adjacent the another longitudinal end of said photosensitive drum such that the boot shape curves away from said photosensitive drum and so as to be exposed at the bottom surface of said process cartridge, said grounding contact being spaced from said photosensitive drum by a second spacing distance, which is less than the first spacing distance, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum toward said developing sleeve, wherein a line extending in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum from said grounding contact to said photosensitive drum intersects a surface of said photosensitive drum at a position spaced a second overlapping distance, which is greater than the first overlapping distance, from the another longitudinal end of said photosensitive drum, and wherein an area of said grounding contact is greater than an area of said developing bias contact; and
- a charging bias contact, having a bent portion, for applying a charging bias voltage to said charging roller, said charging bias contact being disposed adjacent said cleaning blade, adjacent to a second side of said photosensitive drum substantially opposite the first side in the radial direction of said photosensitive drum and adjacent to the another longitudinal end of said photosensitive drum so as to be exposed at the bottom surface of said process cartridge,
- wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are spaced from a plane perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said photosensitive drum by respectively different distances,
- wherein, in the process of mounting said process cartridge to the main assembly, said developing device trails said photosensitive drum in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum, said grounding contact does not interfere with the main assembly developing bias pin, and said charging bias contact does not interfere with the main assembly grounding pin, and
- wherein, when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact respectively contact the main assembly developing bias pin, the main assembly grounding pin, and the main assembly charging bias pin.
- 20. A process cartridge which is arranged to be inserted into a main assembly of an electrophotographic image forming apparatus in an insertion direction and to be detachably mounted therein, said process cartridge comprising:
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum;
- charging means for charging said drum;
- developing means for developing a latent image formed on said drum, said developing means being disposed behind said drum relative to the insertion direction;
- a developing bias contact configured for application of a developing bias voltage to said developing means when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly;
- a grounding contact for electrically grounding said drum when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly; and
- a charging bias contact configured for application of a charging bias voltage to charging means when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly;
- wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed adjacent one end of said drum,
- wherein said developing bias contact and grounding contact are disposed on substantially a diametrically opposite side of a drum axis of said drum to said charging bias contact, and
- wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed so as to be faced downward, and said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly in a direction crossing with a longitudinal direction of said drum.
- 21. A cartridge according to claim 20, wherein said developing means comprises a developing roller, and wherein said developing bias contact and said grounding contact are disposed at a same side of said drum as, and adjacent, said developing roller.
- 22. A cartridge according to claim 21, further comprising a cleaning blade for cleaning toner from said drum.
- 23. A cartridge according to claim 22, wherein said cleaning blade is disposed at an opposite side of said drum to said developing roller.
- 24. A cartridge according to claim 23, wherein said charging bias contact is disposed at a same side of said drum as, and adjacent, said cleaning blade.
- 25. A cartridge according to claim 24, further comprising a drive transmitting portion for receiving, when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, driving force for rotating said drum from the main assembly, said drive transmitting portion being disposed adjacent an opposite end of said drum to said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact.
- 26. A cartridge according to claim 25, wherein said drive transmitting portion includes a helical gear and a spur gear, juxtaposed therewith, for transmitting, to a transfer roller in the main assembly, driving force for rotating the transfer roller.
- 27. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said developing bias contact is disposed further away from said drum than said grounding contact.
- 28. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said grounding contact is larger than said developing bias contact.
- 29. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said developing bias contact has a semi-spherical portion on a rectangular portion.
- 30. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said grounding contact is L-shaped.
- 31. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said grounding contact has a portion extending alongside said drum and a portion extending beyond a length of said drum.
- 32. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein said charging bias contact is bent.
- 33. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are electrically connected with a main assembly developing bias contact, a main assembly grounding contact, and a main assembly charging bias contact, respectively, which are provided faced upward in the main assembly.
- 34. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, are not aligned in the insertion direction.
- 35. A cartridge according to claim 26, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, do not overlap in the insertion direction.
- 36. A cartridge according to claim 20, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, are not aligned in the insertion direction.
- 37. A cartridge according to claim 20, wherein a contact position at which said developing bias contact is contacted to a developing bias contact of the main assembly, a contact position at which said grounding contact is contacted to a grounding contact of the main assembly, and a contact position at which said charging bias contact is contacted to a charging bias contact of the main assembly, do not overlap in the insertion direction.
- 38. A cartridge according to claim 20, wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed on a side of said process cartridge being a bottom surface when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly.
- 39. An image forming apparatus, for forming an image on a recording material, to which a process cartridge is detachably mountable, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting a process cartridge including an electrophotographic photosensitive member; charging means for charging the electrophotographic photosensitive member; developing means for developing a latent image formed on the electrophotographic photosensitive member; a developing bias contact for applying a developing bias voltage to the developing means; a grounding contact for electrically grounding the electrophotographic photosensitive member; and a charging bias contact for applying a charging bias to the charging means, wherein the developing bias contact, the grounding contact, and the charging bias contact are disposed adjacent a same end of the electrophotographic photosensitive member in a longitudinal direction thereof, and wherein the developing bias contact and the grounding contact are disposed adjacent a side of the electrophotographic photosensitive member diametrically opposite, in a radial direction of the electrophotographic photosensitive member, from another side of the electrophotographic photosensitive member which the charging bias contact is disposed adjacent to;
- a main assembly developing bias contact member contactable with the developing bias contact of the process cartridge;
- a main assembly grounding contact member contactable with the grounding contact of the process cartridge; and
- a main assembly charging bias contact member contactable with the charging bias contact of the process cartridge,
- wherein the process cartridge is inserted into said image forming apparatus in a direction such that the developing means trails the electrophotographic photosensitive member in a direction of peripheral movement of the electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 40. An image forming apparatus according to claim 39, wherein said image forming apparatus is an electrophotographic copying machine.
- 41. An image forming apparatus according to claim 39, wherein said image forming apparatus is a laser beam printer.
- 42. An image forming apparatus according to claim 39, wherein said image forming apparatus is a facsimile machine.
- 43. An image forming apparatus, for forming an image on a recording material, to which a process cartridge is mountable, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting a process cartridge including an electrophotographic photosensitive drum for forming a latent image thereon and a flange gear, disposed at one longitudinal end of the photosensitive drum, for receiving driving force from a main assembly of said image forming apparatus to rotate the photosensitive drum when the process cartridge is mounted to said main assembly; a charging roller contactable to the photosensitive drum for charging the photosensitive drum; a developing sleeve for developing the latent image formed on the photosensitive drum; a cleaning blade for cleaning residual toner from the photosensitive drum; a developing bias contact having a substantially semi-circular shape projecting from a rectangular-parallelepiped-shaped portion for applying a developing bias voltage to the developing sleeve, the developing bias contact being disposed adjacent to the developing sleeve adjacent a first side of the photosensitive drum in a radial direction thereof and adjacent to another longitudinal end of the photosensitive drum opposite the one longitudinal end so as to be exposed at a bottom surface of the process cartridge, the developing bias contact being spaced from the photosensitive drum by a first spacing distance in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the photosensitive drum toward the developing sleeve, wherein a line extending in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the photosensitive drum from the developing bias contact to the photosensitive drum intersects a surface of the photosensitive drum at a position spaced a first overlapping distance from the another longitudinal end of the photosensitive drum; a grounding contact being substantially boot-shaped and being electrically connected to an inner circumferential surface of the photosensitive drum for electrically grounding the photosensitive drum, the grounding contact being disposed adjacent the first side of the photosensitive drum and adjacent the another longitudinal end of the photosensitive drum such that the boot shape curves away from the photosensitive drum and so as to be exposed at the bottom surface of the process cartridge, the grounding contact being spaced from the photosensitive drum by a second spacing distance, which is less than the first spacing distance, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the photosensitive drum toward the developing sleeve, wherein a line extending in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the photosensitive drum from the grounding contact to the photosensitive drum intersects a surface of the photosensitive drum at a position spaced a second overlapping distance, which is greater than the first overlapping distance, from the another longitudinal end of the photosensitive drum, and wherein an area of the grounding contact is greater than an area of the developing bias contact; and a charging bias contact, having a bent portion, for applying a charging bias voltage to the charging roller, the charging bias contact being disposed adjacent the cleaning blade, adjacent to a second side of the photosensitive drum substantially opposite the first side in the radial direction of the photosensitive drum, and adjacent to the another longitudinal end of the photosensitive drum so as to be exposed at the bottom surface of the process cartridge, wherein the developing bias contact, the grounding contact, and the charging bias contact are spaced from a plane perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the photosensitive drum by respectively different distances;
- a main assembly developing bias pin contactable with the developing bias contact of the process cartridge;
- a main assembly grounding pin contactable with the grounding contact of the process cartridge; and
- a main assembly charging bias pin contactable with the charging bias contact of the process cartridge,
- wherein, in the process of mounting the process cartridge to said main assembly, the developing device trails the photosensitive drum in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the photosensitive drum, the grounding contact does not interfere with said main assembly developing bias pin, and the charging bias contact does not interfere with said main assembly grounding pin, and
- wherein, when the process cartridge is mounted to said main assembly, the developing bias contact, the grounding contact, and the charging bias contact respectively contact said main assembly developing bias pin, said main assembly grounding pin, and said main assembly charging bias pin.
- 44. An image forming apparatus according to claim 43, wherein said image forming apparatus is an electrophotographic copying machine.
- 45. An image forming apparatus according to claim 43, wherein said image forming apparatus is a laser beam printer.
- 46. An image forming apparatus according to claim 43, wherein said image forming apparatus is a facsimile machine.
- 47. An image forming apparatus, for forming an image on a recording material, to which a process cartridge is mountable, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting a process cartridge including an electrophotographic photosensitive drum; charging means for charging the drum; developing means for developing a latent image formed on the drum, the developing means being disposed behind the drum relative to the insertion direction; a developing bias contact configured for application of a developing bias voltage to the developing means when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly; a grounding contact for electrically grounding the drum when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly; a charging bias contact configured for application of a charging bias voltage to the charging means when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed adjacent one end of the drum, wherein said developing bias contact and the grounding contact are disposed on substantially the diametrically opposite side of the drum axis to the charging bias contact, and wherein said developing bias contact, said grounding contact, and said charging bias contact are disposed so as to be faced downward, and said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly in a direction crossing with a longitudinal direction of said photosensitive drum;
- a main assembly developing bias pin contactable with the developing bias contact of the process cartridge;
- a main assembly grounding pin contactable with the grounding contact of the process cartridge; and
- a main assembly charging bias pin contactable with the charging bias contact of the process cartridge, wherein, when the process cartridge is mounted to said main assembly, the developing bias contact, the grounding contact, and the charging bias contact respectively contact said main assembly developing bias pin, said main assembly grounding pin, and said main assembly charging bias pin.
- 48. An apparatus according to claim 47, wherein said apparatus is one of an electrophotographic copying machine, a laser beam printer, and a facsimile machine.
