Claims
- 1. A process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, comprising:
- a first frame;
- a second frame engageable with said first frame;
- an electrophotographic photosensitive member;
- process means operable on said electrophotographic photosensitive member;
- an elastic seal disposed between said first frame and said second frame to prevent leakage of toner between said first frame and said second frame;
- a projection formed on a connecting surface of one of said first frame and said second frame; and
- a recess formed in a connecting surface of the other of said first frame and said second frame, wherein when said second frame is engaged with said first frame, said projection is faced to said recess with said elastic seal disposed therebetween to locally increase pressure applied to said elastic seal.
- 2. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said projection is formed on said first frame.
- 3. A process cartridge according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said projection is a triangular rib.
- 4. A process cartridge according to claim 3, wherein said second frame is provided with said recess at a position corresponding to said projection when said first frame and said second frame are engaged.
- 5. A process cartridge according to claim 4, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 6. A process cartridge according to claim 5, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 7. A process cartridge according to claim 4, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 8. A process cartridge according to claim 4, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said electrophotographic photosensitive member is a drum, and said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said drum, and a charging member for charging said drum, and wherein said top frame supports said drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said bottom frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, such that when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 9. A process cartridge according to claim 8, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable.
- 10. A process cartridge according to claim 9, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable by a hook-and-opening engagement.
- 11. A process cartridge according to claim 8, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 12. A process cartridge according to claim 11, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 13. A process cartridge according to claim 8, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 14. A process cartridge according to claim 3, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 15. A process cartridge according to claim 14, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 16. A process cartridge according to claim 3, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 17. A process cartridge according to claim 3, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said electrophotographic photosensitive member is a drum, and said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said drum, and a charging member for charging said drum, and wherein said top frame supports said drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said bottom frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, such that when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 18. A process cartridge according to claim 17, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable.
- 19. A process cartridge according to claim 18, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable by a hook-and-opening engagement.
- 20. A process cartridge according to claim 17, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 21. A process cartridge according to claim 20, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 22. A process cartridge according to claim 17, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 23. A process cartridge according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said recess comprises a groove disposed at a position corresponding to said projection when said first frame and said second frame are engaged.
- 24. A process cartridge according to claim 23, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 25. A process cartridge according to claim 24, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 26. A process cartridge according to claim 23, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 27. A process cartridge according to claim 23, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said electrophotographic photosensitive member is a drum, and said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said drum, and a charging member for charging said drum, and wherein said top frame supports said drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said bottom frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, such that when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 28. A process cartridge according to claim 27, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable.
- 29. A process cartridge according to claim 28, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable by a hook-and-opening engagement.
- 30. A process cartridge according to claim 27, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 31. A process cartridge according to claim 30, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 32. A process cartridge according to claim 27, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 33. A process cartridge according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 34. A process cartridge according to claim 33, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 35. A process cartridge according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 36. A process cartridge according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said electrophotographic photosensitive member is a drum, and said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said drum, and a charging member for charging said drum, and wherein said top frame supports said drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said bottom frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, such that when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 37. A process cartridge according to claim 36, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable.
- 38. A process cartridge according to claim 37, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably engageable by a hook-and-opening engagement.
- 39. A process cartridge according to claim 36, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 40. A process cartridge according to claim 39, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 41. A process cartridge according to claim 36, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 42. A process cartridge according to claim 10, further comprising mounting means for mounting said process cartridge, said process cartridge integrally further comprising process means including at least one of charging means, developing means and cleaning means, and an image bearing member including said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 43. A process cartridge according to claim 1, further comprising mounting means for mounting said process cartridge, said process cartridge integrally further comprising process means including at least one of charging means, developing means and cleaning means, and an image bearing member including said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 44. A process cartridge according to claim 1, further comprising mounting means for mounting said process cartridge, said process cartridge integrally further comprising at least one of process means including developing means, and an image bearing member including said electrophotographic photosensitive member.
- 45. A process cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said elastic seal is provided on the connecting surface in which said recess is formed so as to cover said recess.
- 46. A process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, comprising:
- a first frame;
- a second frame separably coupled with said first frame;
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum;
- process means operable on said photosensitive drum;
- an elastic seal disposed on said second frame, between said first frame and said second frame, to prevent leakage of toner between said first frame and said second frame when said first frame and said second frame are coupled;
- a projection, formed on a connecting surface of said first frame; and
- a recess formed in a connecting surface of said second frame, wherein when said first frame and said second frame are coupled, said projection is faced to said recess with said elastic seal disposed therebetween to locally increase pressure applied to said elastic seal.
- 47. A process cartridge according to claim 46, wherein said projection is a triangular rib.
- 48. A process cartridge according to claim 46 or 47, wherein said recess comprises a groove disposed at a position corresponding to said projection when said first frame and said second frame are coupled.
- 49. A process cartridge according to claim 48, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 50. A process cartridge according to claim 49, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said photosensitive drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said photosensitive drum, and a charging member for charging said photosensitive drum, wherein said top frame supports said photosensitive drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said second frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, and wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 51. A process cartridge according to claim 50, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 52. A process cartridge according to claim 50, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 53. A process cartridge according to claim 52, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 54. A process cartridge according to claim 50, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 55. A process cartridge according to claim 48, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 56. A process cartridge according to claim 48, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said photosensitive drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said photosensitive drum, and a charging member for charging said photosensitive drum, wherein said top frame supports said photosensitive drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said second frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, and wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 57. A process cartridge according to claim 56, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 58. A process cartridge according to claim 56, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 59. A process cartridge according to claim 58, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 60. A process cartridge according to claim 56, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 61. A process cartridge according to claim 46 or 47, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 62. A process cartridge according to claim 61, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said photosensitive drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said photosensitive drum, and a charging member for charging said photosensitive drum, wherein said top frame supports said photosensitive drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said second frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, and wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 63. A process cartridge according to claim 62, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 64. A process cartridge according to claim 62, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 65. A process cartridge according to claim 64, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 66. A process cartridge according to claim 62, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 67. A process cartridge according to claim 46 or 47, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 68. A process cartridge according to claim 46 or 47, wherein said first frame is a bottom frame, said second frame is a top frame, said process means includes developing means for developing a latent image formed on said photosensitive drum, cleaning means for removing residual toner from said photosensitive drum, and a charging member for charging said photosensitive drum, wherein said top frame supports said photosensitive drum, said developing means and said cleaning means, and said second frame supports said charging member and a toner container for containing toner to be used by said developing means, and wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 69. A process cartridge according to claim 68, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 70. A process cartridge according to claim 68, wherein said charging member includes a charging roller, and said cleaning means includes a cleaning blade.
- 71. A process cartridge according to claim 70, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 72. A process cartridge according to claim 68, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning means, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 73. A process cartridge according to claim 46, wherein said elastic seal is provided on the connecting surface of said second frame in which said recess is formed so as to cover said recess.
- 74. A process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus comprising:
- a bottom frame;
- a top frame separably coupled with said bottom frame;
- an electrophotographic photosensitive drum in said bottom frame;
- a developing roller, disposed in said bottom frame, supplying toner to said photosensitive drum by rotation thereof to develop a latent image on said photosensitive drum;
- a cleaning blade, disposed in said bottom frame, contacting said photosensitive drum to remove residual toner from said photosensitive drum;
- a charging roller, disposed in said top frame, contacting said photosensitive drum to charge said photosensitive drum;
- a triangular rib formed on a surface of said bottom frame for connection with said top frame;
- a recess formed in a surface of said top frame for connection with said bottom frame; and
- an elastic seal, disposed on said top frame between said bottom frame and said top frame so as to cover said recess, to prevent leakage of toner between said bottom frame and said top frame when said bottom frame and said top frame are coupled,
- wherein when said top frame is engaged with said bottom frame, said triangular rib is faced to said recess with said elastic seal disposed therebetween to locally increase pressure applied to said elastic seal, and wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 75. A process cartridge according to claim 74, wherein said recess comprises a groove disposed at a position corresponding to said triangular rib when said bottom frame and said top frame are coupled.
- 76. A process cartridge according to claim 74 or 75, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a material which becomes elastomeric after solidification.
- 77. A process cartridge according to claim 74 or 75, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 78. A process cartridge according to claim 77, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning blades, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 79. A process cartridge according to claim 74 or 75, wherein said elastic seal is formed of a foamed polyurethane resin material.
- 80. A process cartridge according to claim 79, wherein said top frame and said bottom frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 81. A process cartridge according to claim 80, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning blade, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 82. A process cartridge according to claim 74, further comprising a residual toner container for containing residual toner removed from said drum by said cleaning blade, wherein said elastic seal is provided between said top frame and said bottom frame at said residual toner container.
- 83. An image forming apparatus for forming an image on a recording material, wherein a process cartridge is detachably mountable to said image forming apparatus, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting the process cartridge, the process cartridge including a first frame, a second frame separably engaged with the first frame, an electrophotographic photosensitive drum, process means operable on the photosensitive drum, an elastic seal disposed between the first frame and the second frame to prevent leakage of toner from between the first frame and the second frame, a projection formed on a connecting surface of one of the first frame and the second frame, and a recess formed in a connecting surface of the other of the first frame and the second frame, wherein when the first frame and the second frame are engaged, the projection is faced to the recess with the elastic seal disposed therebetween to locally increase pressure applied to the elastic seal; and
- feeding means for feeding the recording material.
- 84. An image forming apparatus for forming an image on a recording material, wherein a process cartridge is detachably mountable to said image forming apparatus, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting the process cartridge, the process cartridge including a first frame, a second frame separably coupled with the first frame, an electrophotographic photosensitive drum, process means operable on the photosensitive drum, an elastic seal disposed on the second frame between the first frame and the second frame to prevent leakage of toner between the first frame and the second frame when the first frame and the second frame are coupled, a projection, formed on a connecting surface of the first frame, and a recess formed in a connecting surface of the second frame, wherein when the first frame and the second frame are coupled, the projection is faced to the recess with the elastic seal disposed therebetween to locally increase pressure applied to the elastic seal; and
- feeding means for feeding the recording material.
- 85. An image forming apparatus for forming an image on a recording material, wherein a process cartridge is detachably mountable to said image forming apparatus, said image forming apparatus comprising:
- mounting means for mounting said process cartridge, the process cartridge including a bottom frame and a top frame separably coupled with said bottom frame, an electrophotographic photosensitive drum disposed in said bottom frame, a developing roller, disposed in said bottom frame, for supplying toner to said photosensitive drum by rotation thereof for developing a latent image on said photosensitive drum, a cleaning blade, disposed in said bottom frame, contacting said photosensitive drum for removing residual toner from said photosensitive drum, a charging roller, disposed in said top frame, contacting said photosensitive drum for charging said photosensitive drum, a triangular rib formed on a surface of said bottom frame for connection with said top frame, a recess formed in a surface of said top frame for connection with said bottom frame, and an elastic seal, disposed on said top frame between said bottom frame and said top frame so as to cover said recess, to prevent leakage of toner between said bottom frame and said top frame when said bottom frame and said top frame are coupled, wherein when said top frame is engaged with said bottom frame said triangular rib is faced to said recess with said elastic seal disposed therebetween to locally increase pressure applied to said elastic seal; and
- feeding means for feeding the recording material, wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to said image forming apparatus, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
- 86. An apparatus according to claim 83, 84 or 85, wherein said image forming apparatus is an electrophotographic copying machine.
- 87. An image forming apparatus according to claim 83, 84 or 85, wherein said image forming apparatus is a laser beam printer.
- 88. An image forming apparatus according to claim 83, 84 or 85, wherein said image forming apparatus is a facsimile machine.
- 89. A method of assembling a process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a first frame;
- providing a second frame separably couplable with said first frame;
- providing an electrophotographic photosensitive drum in said first frame or said second frame;
- providing process means operable on said photosensitive drum;
- disposing an elastic seal on said second frame between said first frame and said second frame, to prevent leakage of toner between said first frame and said second frame when said first frame and said second frame are coupled;
- providing a projection on a connecting surface of said first frame;
- providing a recess in a connecting surface of the second frame; and
- locally increasing a pressure applied to the elastic seal between said first frame and said second frame when said first frame and said second frame are coupled by facing the projection to the recess with the elastic seal disposed therebetween.
- 90. A method according to claim 89, wherein said first frame and said second frame are separably couplable by hook-and-opening engagement.
- 91. A method of assembling a process cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a bottom frame;
- providing a top frame separably coupled with said bottom frame;
- providing an electrophotographic photosensitive drum in said bottom frame;
- providing a developing roller in said bottom frame for supplying toner to said photosensitive drum by rotation thereof to develop a latent image on said photosensitive drum;
- providing a cleaning blade in said bottom frame for contacting said photosensitive drum to remove residual toner from said photosensitive drum;
- providing a charging roller in said top frame for contacting said photosensitive drum to charge said photosensitive drum;
- providing a triangular rib on a surface of said bottom frame for connection with said top frame;
- providing a recess in a surface of said top frame for connection with said bottom frame;
- providing an elastic seal on said top frame between said bottom frame and said top frame so as to cover said recess, to prevent leakage of toner between said bottom frame and said top frame when said bottom frame and said top frame are coupled; and
- locally increasing pressure applied to said elastic seal between said top frame and said bottom frame when said top frame and said bottom frame are coupled by facing the triangular rib to the recess with the elastic seal disposed therebetween,
- wherein when said process cartridge is mounted to the main assembly, said bottom frame is at a lower position, and said top frame is at a higher position.
