Claims
- 1. A process for the continuous crystallization of at least one crystallizable material from a solution using a series of crystallization tanks, the process including the steps of
- (a) feeding a feed solution containing at least one crystallizable material to a first crystallization tank in the series;
- (b) initiating a partial crystallization of said feed solution in said first crystallization tank to form a suspension;
- (c) classifying the suspension in said first tank to obtain a suspension fraction containing finer crystals and a suspension fraction containing a mixture of both finer and coarser crystals;
- (d) passing said suspension fraction containing finer crystals to at least one additional crystallization tank in the series;
- (e) initiating a further crystallization of said crystallizable material in the suspension in each of said additional crystallization tanks;
- (f) classifying the suspension in each of said additional crystallization tanks to obtain a suspension fraction containing finer crystals and a suspension fraction containing a mixture of both finer and coarser crystals;
- (g) recirculating the suspension fraction containing a mixture of both finer and coarser crystals from each of said additional crystallization tanks to the previous crystallization tank;
- (h) passing the suspension fraction containing finer crystals from each additional crystallization tank but the last crystallization tank to a subsequent crystallization tank in the series;
- (i) Passing said suspension fraction containing finer crystals from the last crystallization tank to a separator to obtain a mother liquor fraction as discharge and a recovered, concentrated fraction;
- (j) returning said recovered, concentrated fraction to the last tank in the series;
- (k) passing descending coarse crystals isolated by settling out from said suspension fraction containing a mixture of both finer and coarser crystals in said first crystallization tank in countercurrent to a liquid solution arriving from a separator system wherein coarse crystals are separated from a suspension to form product crystals leaving a residual solution which is mixed with at least a portion of the feed solution containing at least one crystallizable material to form said liquid solution and for recirculation to the separator system.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said separator system of step (k) includes a liquid distributor and a filter, and the coarse crystals pass from the first crystallization tank through said liquid distributor to said filter wherein the coarse crystals are separated from the liquid in which they were suspended.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein an adjustable portion of said feed solution is fed directly to said liquid distributor.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein an adjustable portion of said suspension fraction containing coarser crystals passing from said liquid distributor to said filter is passed to said first crystallization tank.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein an elutriation column is connected between said first crystallization tank and said separator system and wherein coarse crystals from the first crystallization tank sink countercurrent to solution rising from the liquid distributor.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein an adjustable portion of the suspension fraction containing finer crystals passing from one crystallization tank in the series to the next crystallization tank in the series except for the last crystallization tank is recirculated to the crystallization tank from which it came.
- 7. The process of claim 6 including adjusting the flow of suspension fraction containing finer crystals passing from one crystallization tank in the series to the next one.
