Claims
- 1. A process for selectively polymerizing isobutene in an olefinic C.sub.4 cut comprising isobutene and normal butenes, said process comprising the step of contacting the olefinic C.sub.4 cut with a catalyst consisting essentially of silica-alumina; whereby at least 90% of the isobutene and less than 10% of the normal butenes in the cut are converted.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, wherein the silica content of the silica-alumina polymerization catalyst is from 60 to 95% by weight.
- 3. A process according to claim 2, wherein said silica content is from 70% to 90% by weight.
- 4. A process according to claim 1, wherein the polymerization step is effected at a temperature of from 100.degree. to 180.degree. C., a pressure of from 25 to 60 bars, and a space velocity of from 0.5 to 5 liters of feed per liter of catalyst per hour.
- 5. A process according to claim 1, wherein the isobutene content of the olefinic C.sub.4 cut is up to 35% by weight.
- 6. A process according to claim 1, wherein the olefinic C.sub.4 cut comprises more than about 35% by weight of isobutene, and said cut is diluted with at least one portion of at least one of butane and isobutane, the resultant diluted cut being supplied as the charge to the polymerization zone.
