Claims
- 1. A method for decreasing the corrosivity of a naphthenic acid-containing, corrosive crude, comprising: contacting a starting naphthenic acid-containing corrosive crude oil with an effective amount of a Group IIA metal naphthenate salt to produce a treated crude oil having decreased naphthenic acid corrosivity.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the effective amount of naphthenate salt is from 0.025:1 to less than 0.5:1 moles based on acid content of starting oil.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the effective amount of naphthenate salt is from 1:1 to 5:1 moles based on acid content of starting oil.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the crude oil is an acid-containing, corrosive whole crude.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the crude oil is an acid-containing, corrosive crude fraction.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the crude oil is a crude fraction having a boiling point of 650+° F. (343+° C.).
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the crude oil is a crude fraction having a boiling point of 105030 ° F. (565+° C.).
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the crude oil is a vacuum gas oil.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the crude oil is a topped crude.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the acid-containing crude oil is a naphthenic acid-containing, corrosive crude oil.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the acid-containing, corrosive crude oil has a neutralization number of from 0.2 to 10 mg KOH/g.
- 12. A method for decreasing the corrosivity of a naphthenic acid-containing, corrosive crude, comprising: blending a starting naphthenic acid-containing corrosive crude with an effective amount of a second metal naphthenate-containing crude wherein the metal naphthenates are selected from Group IA and IIA to produce a final, treated crude oil having a decreased naphthenic acid corrosivity.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the metal naphthenate is selected from calcium and magnesium naphthenates.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein the metal naphthenate is from greater than zero to 10:1 moles of metal based on acid content of the starting, acid-containing crude oil.
- 15. The method of claim 12 wherein the metal naphthenate is from 0.025 to 1:1 moles of metal based on acid content of the starting, acid-containing crude oil.
- 16. The method of claim 12 wherein the metal naphthenate is from 0.25 to 1:1 moles of metal based on acid content of starting, acid-containing crude oil.
- 17. The method of claim 12 wherein the starting crude oil and second crude are whole crudes.
- 18. The method of claim 12 wherein the starting crude oil and second crude are crude fractions having a boiling point of 650+° F. (343+° C.).
- 19. The method of claim 12 wherein the starting crude oil and second crude are crude fractions having a boiling point of 1050+° F. (565+° C.).
- 20. The method of claim 12 wherein starting crude oil and second crude are topped crudes.
- 21. The method of claim 12 wherein the acid-containing crude oil is a naphthenic acid-containing, corrosive crude oil.
- 22. The method of claim 12 wherein the starting acid-containing, corrosive crude oil has a neutralization number of from 0.2 to 10 mg KOH/g.
- 23. The method of claim 1 or 12 wherein the metal naphthenate is a full or half salt.
