Claims
- 1. A process for catalytically demetalizing and desulfurizing a hydrocarbon oil containing high metal and sulfur components, which comprises contacting said oil and hydrogen with a catalyst under demetallizing and desulfurizing conditions including a hydrogen pressure of about 500 to 3000 p.s.i.g., a hydrogen circulation rate of about 1000 to 15,000 scf/bbl of feed, a temperature of about 600.degree. to 850.degree. F, and a space velocity of 0.1 to 5.0 LHSV, said catalyst comprising the oxides or sulfides of a Group VIB metal and the oxides or sulfides of an iron group metal composited with a support consisting essentially of an intimate mixture of gamma alumina with an alumina selected from the group consisting of Delta phase alumina, Theta phase alumina, and mixtures thereof, said catalyst having at least 45% of its pore volume in pores 30 to 150A diameter, at least 10% of its pore volume in pores less than 30A diameter, at least 15% of its pore volume in pores greater than 300A diameter, and a surface area of 125 to about 210 m.sup.2 /g.
- 2. The process described in claim 1 where said catalyst is further characterized by a total pore volume of 0.4 to 0.65 cc/gm and has at least about 10% of its pore volume in pores greater than 150A up to 300A diameter.
- 3. The process described in claim 1 including the step of cracking said oil following said demetalation and said desulfurization, said cracking being carried out under the following conditions: 800.degree. to 1500.degree. F temperature, 1 to 5 atmospheres pressure and a space velocity of about 1 to 1000 WHSV.
- 4. The process described in claim 1 including the step of hydrocracking said oil following said demetalation and desulfurization, said hyrocracking being carried out under the following conditions: 400.degree. to 1000.degree. F temperature and 100 to 3500 psig pressure.
- 5. The process described in claim 1 including the step of coking said oil following said demetalation and desulfurization, said coking being carried out under the following conditions: 800.degree. to 1100.degree. F temperature and 1 to 10 atmospheres pressure.
- 6. The process described in claim 2 wherein said hydrocarbon oil is a residual oil, and including the step of cracking said oil following said demetalation and desulfurization step, said cracking being done at the following conditions: a temperature of 800.degree. to 1500.degree. F, a pressure of 1 to 5 atmospheres absolute, and a space velocity of about 1 to 1000 WHSV.
