Claims
- 1. A process for forming an extruded material onto a glazing which comprises:
- placing extrusion die means against an edge of a glazing, wherein said die means includes a calibrated exit orifice and plate means positionable adjacent said exit orifice, said plate means having formed therein first and second die cross-sections which define corresponding profile cross-sections of material extruded through said exit orifice;
- positioning said plate means in a first location adjacent said exit orifice to position a first die cross section downstream from said exit orifice;
- guiding said die means along and against a first portion of an edge of the glazing while delivering a flowable material at a first flow rate to said die means to form a first extruded section of said material having a first profile cross section corresponding to said first die cross section along said first portion;
- positioning said plate means into a second location adjacent said exit orifice to position a second die cross section downstream from said exit orifice; and
- guiding said die means along and against a second portion of the edge of said glazing while delivering said material at a second flow rate to said die means to form a second extruded section of said material along said second portion of the glazing edge, said second extruded section having a profile cross section corresponding to said second die cross section.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said first portion is a circumferential edge portion of said glazing and
- wherein said first section is formed as a continuous extruded section therealong.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein each of said delivery steps includes utilizing dosing means for delivering a regulated quantity of said material corresponding to the die cross section of said movable plate means positioned in front of said exit orifice to said die means.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said dosing means is controlled by a memory-programmable control device.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein said step of guiding said die means along and against said first and second portions includes utilizing a robot to move said die means.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said robot utilizing step includes controlling said robot by a memory programmable control device.
- 7. A process for extruding a material onto a glazing which comprises:
- placing an extrusion die means against an edge of said glazing, wherein said die means includes a calibrated exit orifice and a movable plate having formed therein first and second defined die cross-sections positionable downstream from said exit orifice to define corresponding profile cross-sections of material extruded through said exit orifice;
- positioning said movable plate to position the first die cross section in front of said exit orifice;
- delivering a flowable material to said die means while guiding said die means along a first portion of a path defined by a circumferential edge of said glazing to form on said first portion of said edge a first extruded section of said material having a first profile cross section;
- continuously moving said movable plate from said first die cross section downstream from said exit orifice to the second cross section in front of said exit orifice while guiding said die means along a second portion of said path to form a second extruded section of said material having a second continuously modified profile cross section while the flow rate of said material to said die means is accordingly varied continuously along said path;
- positioning said movable plate to position a second cross section downstream from said orifice;
- guiding said die means along a third portion of said path to form a third extruded section of said material having the second profile cross section while the flow rate of said material to said die means is controlled with the positioning of said movable plate.
- 8. The process according to claim 7, wherein each positioning step is performed at a predetermined point along said path.
- 9. The process according to claim 7, wherein said flow rate of said flowable material is modified according to the position of said die means along said path.
- 10. The process according to claim 7, wherein said flow rate is modified by a programmable controller.
- 11. The process according to claim 7, wherein said guiding steps include using a robot to move said die means along said path.
- 12. A process for forming an extruded material onto a glazing which comprises:
- extruding material in the form of a first profile having a first cross section from a die onto a glazing;
- changing the first profile of the material by extruding material in the form of a second profile having a second cross section from said die onto said glazing, said second cross section being deposited adjacent said first profile and being different from said first cross section;
- delivering said material to said die at a first flow rate to provide sufficient material to form said first profile; and
- delivering said material to said die at a second flow rate to provide sufficient material to form said second profile, wherein said second flow rate is different from said first flow rate and is tailored to correspond to the changing shape of the first material profile to the second material profile.
- 13. The process according to claim 12, which further comprises guiding said extruded material along and against a portion of the edge of said glazing while delivering said material to said die at said first and second flow rates.
- 14. The process according to claim 12, which further comprises positioning movable plate means in first and second locations downstream of said die to correspondingly position said first and second cross sections from said die onto said glazing.
