Claims
- 1. A method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure comprising the steps:
- (a) providing a continuous strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive and being of a predetermined width,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) supporting each said cut strip in the processor across less than its entire width,
- (e) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives, and
- (f) feeding the next cut strip into the processor after the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the continuous strip of material defined in step (a) comprises a pre-creased, prefolded s strip of material.
- 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of applying liens of adhesive to the folded strip.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the processor pushes the cut strips into a strip stacker such that each next strip is superimposed over the previous strip.
- 5. The method of claim 3, wherein the processor discharges the processed and cut strips onto a conveyor.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the strip feeding rate is continuous, and the cutter is synchronized to the feed rate of the continuous strip of material.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the accelerator for the cut strips is spaced form the cutter such that the accelerator engages and tends to accelerate the strip substantially at the time or after the time that it is severed from the continuous strip.
- 8. A process of fabricating a material adapted to be formed into an expandable honeycomb structure comprising the steps of: `(a) feeding at least first and second webs of material in a downstream direction,
- (b) feeding between the first and second webs a plurality of side-by-side strips of material,
- (c) applying lines of adhesive to the webs or the strips,
- (d) bringing the first and second webs and strips into juxtaposition and alignment such that a pair of spaced line of adhesive are aligned with each strip with each line of the pair being exposed to a different side of each strip,
- (e) applying pressure or heat to cause the adhesive lines to adhere the individual strips to both the first and second webs,
- (f) collecting the structure resulting rom step (e).
- 9. In the process of claim 8 wherein said strips are elongated and are fed longitudinally in a downstream direction between the first and second webs of material.
- 10. The process of claim 8, wherein the lines of adhesive applied in step (c) are applied to the first and second webs.
- 11. The process of claim 8, wherein the first and second webs are optically or air transparent, and the strips are optically or air opaque.
- 12. The process of claim 8, wherein the strips of step (b) are formed by slitting a third web of material.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein the lines of adhesive applied in step (c) are applied to the third web before carrying out step (c).
- 14. The process of claim 12, wherein the lines of adhesive applied in step (c) are applied to the strips after carrying out the slitting step.
- 15. The process of claim 8, wherein step (f) is carried out by winding the resulting structure onto a roll.
- 16. A process for fabricating material adapted to be formed into a honeycomb structure comprising the steps of:
- (a) feeding at least first and second webs of a predetermined width of material in a downstream direction with the width of the webs extending transversely to said downstream direction,
- (b) feeding between the first and second webs a plurality of spaced apart strips of material,
- (c) applying lines of adhesive to the webs or the strips,
- (d) bringing the first and second webs and strips into juxtaposition and alignment such that a pair of spaced lines of adhesive are aligned with each strip with each line of the pair being exposed to a different side of each strips,
- (e) applying pressure or heat to cause the adhesive lines to adhere the individual strips to both the first and second webs, and
- (f) collecting the structure resulting from step (e).
- 17. The process of claim 16 wherein the strips are elongated with a predetermined width and are fed longitudinally between the first and second webs in a downstream direction and wherein the combined width of the strips is substantially equal to one-half of the width of a web.
- 18. The process of claim 16, wherein the first and second webs are air opaque and the strips are air opaque.
- 19. The process of claim 16, wherein the resultant structure is opened up to form a honeycomb of open-ended cells, and to opposite ends of the honeycomb cells is laminated a sheet.
- 20. A process for fabricating material material adapted to be formed into a honeycomb structure comprising the steps of:
- (a) feeding at least first and second webs of a predetermined width of material in a downstream direction with the width o the webs extending transversely to said downstream direction,
- (b) feeding between the first and second webs a plurality of spaced apart strips of material,
- (c) applying liens of adhesive to the webs or the strips,
- (d) bringing the first and second webs and strips not juxtaposition,
- (e) applying pressure or heat to cause the adhesive lines to adhere the individual strips to both the first and second webs,
- (f) collecting the structure resulting from step (e), and
- (g) opening the resultant structure to form a honeycomb of open-ended cells and to opposite ends o the honeycomb cells laminating a sheet.
- 21. A method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing only one continuous folded strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives so that said cut strip is bonded to the previously cut strip, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip not the processor water the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 22. A single adhesive applying strip method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing only one continuous elongated strip of material and in a single stp applying with a glue applicator a longitudinal one of adhesive to the material,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in eh processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives so that said cut strip is bonded to the previously cut strip, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip into the processor after the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 23. A method in accordance with claim 22 wherein the provided continuous strip of material is elongated and is pre-folded along its length.
- 24. A method in accordance with claim 23 wherein said strip is pre-folded along two longitudinally extending lines.
- 25. A single bonding step method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing only one continuous strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips and simultaneously bonding said cut strip to the previously cut strip before the next cut strip arrives so that each strip used in fabricating the honeycomb structure is processed thorough only one bonding step, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip into the processor after the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 26. A method in accordance with claim 25 wherein the provided continuous strip of material is elongated and is pre-folded along its length.
- 27. A single cutting step method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure form only one continuous strip of material comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing only one continuous strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip only one time into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives so that said cut strip bonds to the previously cut strip, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip into the processor after the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 28. A method in accordance with claim 23 wherein the provided continuous strip of material is elongated and is pre-folded along its length.
- 29. A method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure from elongated strip of material wherein the structure includes a plurality of adjacent elongated cores extending in the longitudinal direction of said strips comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing only one continuous strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive extending along its length,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives so that said cut strip bonds to the previously cut strip, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip into the processor after the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 30. A method in accordance with claim 29 wherein the provided continuous strip of material is elongated and is pre-folded along its length.
- 31. A method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure from elongated strips of folded material wherein the structure includes a plurality of adjacent elongated cores expending the longitudinal direction of said trips comprising the steps of:
- () providing only one continuous folded strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive extending along its length,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip only one time into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives and simultaneously bonding the cut strip to the previously cut strip so that each strip used in fabricating the honeycomb structure is processed through only one bonding step, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip into the processor after the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 32. A method of fabricating an expandable honeycomb structure comprised of a single row of adjacent elongated cells comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing only one continuous strip of material containing at least one line of adhesive,
- (b) feeding said strip through a cutter for cutting said continuous strip into predetermined lengths,
- (c) thereafter accelerating each cut strip downstream to a processor for forming the honeycomb structure,
- (d) processing said cut strip in the processor by stacking the strip with similarly cut strips before the next cut strip arrives so that said cut strip is bonded to the previously cut strip, and
- (e) feeding the next cut strip into the processor water the previous cut strip has been processed.
- 33. A method in accordance with claim 32 wherein the provided continuous strip of material is elongated and is pre-folded along its length.
