Claims
- 1. A method for strengthening a can end having an annular fringe region and a central panel portion comprising:
- providing a contour tool having a first axis and a first tool surface oriented perpendicularly to the first axis and a counter-contour tool having a second axis, a step and a second tool surface oriented at an acute angle diverging radially outwardly in wedge-type fashion relative to the first form tool surface, wherein the first axis and second axis are coaxial,
- moving at least one of the contour tool and the counter-contour tool thereby squeezing the can end between the first and second tool surfaces in the annular fringe region thereby moving material of the can end in the annular fringe region such that substantially no material is displaced radially inward and substantially all material is displaced radially outward relative to the step whereby the closure end is strengthened in the annular fringe region to prevent bulging of the central panel portion.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 comprising:
- providing an annular device facing in finger-like fashion from the counter contour tool to the contour tool, wherein the can end is punched out of a planar sheet and has an axis and an edge portion, the can end being shaped between form tools thereby forming a circumferential groove in and wherein the contour tool and the counter-contour tool have outer edges and the annular holding-down device is positioned radially outside the outer edges of the contour tool and counter-contour tool so that when the can end is squeezed between the first and second tool surfaces, the annular holding-down device applies pressure in the core groove.
- 3. Method according to claim 1, wherein the can end has a radius of curvature between the annular fringe region and a circumferential groove in an edge portion of the can end.
- 4. Method according to claim 3, wherein material is displaced radially outward through the radius of curvature thereby orienting an inner wall of the circumferential grove more parallel with respect to the first and second tool axes.
- 5. Method according to claim 3, comprising a leveling step for leveling a radially outer portion of the fringe region for further reducing the radius of curvature.
- 6. A method for strengthening a can end having a circumferential groove and an annular fringe region in a central panel portion comprising:
- providing a first tool having a first axis and a first tool surface oriented perpendicularly to the first axis and a second tool having a second axis, and a second tool surface diverging radially outwardly in wedge-type fashion relative to the first tool surface, wherein the first axis and second axis are parallel,
- moving at least one of the first and second tools thereby squeezing the can end between the first and second tool surfaces in the annular fringe region thereby moving material of the can end from the annular fringe region such that substantially all moved material is displaced radially outward towards the circumferential groove whereby the can end is strengthened in the annular fringe region and bulging of the central panel portion is reduced.
