Claims
- 1. A process for the partial hydrogenation of a dinitrile to an aminonitrile, comprising the step of contacting the dinitrile with a hydrogen-containing fluid in the presence of (a) a solvent comprising liquid ammonia, an alcohol, or both; (b) a hydrogenation catalyst; and (c) an additive for improving the yield of and/or selectivity to the aminonitrile, wherein the dinitrile has the general formula R(CN)2, wherein R is an alkylene group, and wherein the additive comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of;carbon monoxide; a multi-centered metal carbonyl cluster containing (i) at least two metal atoms within the cluster, (ii) at least three bridges between the metal atoms within the cluster, and (iii) at least one carbonyl group bonded to a metal atom; and an organic isonitrile.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the dinitrile is selected from the group consisting of adiponitrile, methylglutaronitrile and alpha,omega-dodecanedinitrile.
- 3. The process of claim 1, wherein the solvent is liquid ammonia.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein the hydrogenation catalyst comprises a transition metal selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, rhodium and combinations thereof.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein the hydrogenation catalyst is in sponge metal form.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein the catalytic metal is supported on an inorganic support.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein the hydrogenation catalyst is precontacted with the additive.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein the additive is carbon monoxide.
- 9. The process of claim 8, wherein the ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogenation catalyst is in the range of from about 0.001:1 to about 10:1 mmoles CO/g catalyst.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein the additive is a multi-centered metal carbonyl cluster.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein the weight ratio of additive to hydrogenation catalyst is in the range of from about 0.001:1 to about 0.5:1.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein the multi-centered metal carbonyl cluster is selected from the group consisting of Fe2(CO)9, Co4(CO)12, Ru3(CO)12, Rh6(CO)16, Os3(CO)12 and Ir4(CO)12, and combinations of two or more thereof.
- 13. The process of claim 1, wherein the additive is an organic isonitrile.
- 14. The process of claim 13, wherein the weight ratio of additive to hydrogenation catalyst is in the range of from about 0.001:1 to about 2:1.
- 15. The process of claim 13, wherein the organic isonitrile has the general formula R′—N═C:, where R′ is a hydrocarbyl group containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 16. The process of claim 1, wherein the metal of the multi-centered metal carbonyl cluster is a Group VIII metal.
- 17. The process of claim 10, wherein the metal of the multi-centered metal carbonyl cluster is a Group VIII metal.
