Claims
- 1. A process for imparting soil resistance to polyester-fiber-containing textile materials containing at least 40 percent polyester by weight wherein the flame retarding characteristics of such materials are not substantially adversely affected, which comprises applying an effective minor amount of a substantially oil and water repellent fluoropolymer to the surface of the textile material by means of an engraved roll thereby covering the fibers on and near the surface of the textile material while avoiding substantial penetration of said fluoropolymer into the sections of said material that are neither at or near the surface of said material, drying and curing the resulting fluoropolymer modified textile material.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the amount of fluoropolymer applied is sufficient to form a discrete, discontinuous fluoropolymer coating on the stratum of fibers in and near the surface of the fabric.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the amount of fluoropolymer applied is less than about 0.25 percent by weight on a solids add-on basis.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein said textile material is treated with an aqueous acid solution to lower the pH of the textile material to a pH of less than about 7 prior to applying the substantially oil and water repellent fluoropolymer to the textile material.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein said pH is adjusted to from about 4 to about 6.5.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein the back surface of the textile material is backcoated with a flame retarding material after application of the fluoropolymer to same.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein said flame retardant is selected from polyvinyl chloride, antimony oxide, aluminum silicate, organic phosphonates, vinylidene chloride, and decobromodiphenyloxide.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein said textile material is 100 percent polyester.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein said textile material is a polyester nylon blend.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein said fluoropolymer is applied in association with a fluorocarbon extender, selected from ethoxylated fatty derivatives and polyethylene-containing compositions.
