Claims
- 1. In a process for making a surface functionalized macroporous styrene polymer wherein styrene monomer units are polymerized in the presence of a divinyl cross linking agent and a surfactant in a water in-monomer microemulsion, the improvement comprising admixing with the microemulsion as a functionalizing agent a bisphosphonic acid derivative having the formula: ##STR3## wherein each one of the groups R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are together --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are together --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --;
- X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl and COOH;
- Y is selected from the group consisting of an optionally unsaturated alkylene group (CH.sub.2).sub.n --where n has the value 0 to 12, --OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O, --OCH.sub.2 C*H(OH)CH.sub.2 --, wherein the carbon atom marked with * is chiral and is in a form selected from the group consisting of the R-form, S form, and a racemate; and
- Ph is a phenyl group which carries the vinyl group in metaor para position to the methylene group; and,
- reacting the mixture to form a macroporous styrene polymer functionally modified with the bisphosphonic acid derivative.
- 2. The process of claim 1 further comprising, in a subsequent step, forming the functionally modified macroporous polymer into a metal salt or a metal complex.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the metal salt or metal complex is formed by an ion-exchange reaction.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the bisphosphonic acid derivative is first formed into a metal salt or a metal complex form and then admixed with the microemulsion.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein each one of the groups R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 of the bisphosphonic acid derivative admixed with the microemulsion is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are together --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are together --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- and wherein the functionally modified macroporous styrene polymer formed from the reaction is subjected to a hydrolysis reaction to convert at least one of the groups R.sub.1 -R.sub.4 to hydrogen.
- 6. The process of claim 5 further comprising, in a subsequent step, forming the hydrolyzed and functionally modified polymer into a metal salt or a metal complex.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein the metal salt or metal complex is formed by an ion-exchange reaction.
- 8. The process of claim 2 wherein the metal is a transition metal.
- 9. The process of claim 4 wherein the metal is a transition metal.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein the bisphosphonic acid derivative is 1-(3-vinylphenylpropane) 2,2-bisphosphonic acid.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein the bisphosphonic acid derivative is admixed in amount of up to 20 percent by weight of the total amount of monomer in the mixture.
- 12. The process of claim 1 wherein the surfactant is sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate.
- 13. The process of claim 1 wherein the cross-linking agent is a compound having the formula:
- CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--Ph--(CH.sub.2 O).sub.m --(CH.sub.2).sub.m ' --(O--CH.sub.2).sub.m --Ph--CH.dbd.Ch.sub.2
- wherein m is 0 or 1, and when m is 0, m' is 1-12, and when m is 1, m' is 2-12, the vinyl groups on the phenyl groups of the compound being in a meta or a para position on the phenyl groups with respect to the methylene groups bonded to the phenyl groups.
- 14. The process of claim 1 wherein the cross-linking agent is a compound having the formula:
- CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--Ph--CH.sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m' --O--CH.sub.2 --Ph--CH.dbd.CH.sub.2
- wherein m' is 2-12 and the vinyl groups on the phenyl groups of the compound are in a meta or a para position on the phenyl groups with respect to the methylene groups bonded to the phenyl groups.
- 15. The process of claim 1 wherein the cross-linking agent is divinyl benzene.
- 16. The process of claim 13 wherein the cross linking agent is 1,2 bis(vinyl phenyl) ethane.

No, 5,200,554, the disclosure of which is expressly incorporated herein by reference, and this is a continuation-in-part of Applicants' U.S. patent application for Novel Cross-Linking Agents And Their Use which is being filed concurrently on the same date, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
