Claims
- 1. A process for making a terpolymer of vinyl amine, N-vinyl formamide and amidine which comprises:
- (a) polymerizing N-vinylformamide, and
- (b) hydrolyzing the poly(N-vinylformamide) formed in step (a) by heating at a temperature above 90.degree. C. but below 175.degree. C. in an aqueous medium which contains less than 50 weight percent ammonia or alkylamine as the sole hydrolysis promoting agent.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said terpolymer has the structural formula: ##STR3## wherein x+y+z equal a sum,
- x is 15 to 90 percent of said sum,
- y is 5 to 60 percent of said sum, and
- z is 5 to 60 percent of said sum.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein hydrolysis is carried out at a temperature in the range of 100.degree. to 160.degree. C. in an aqueous medium containing 0.5 to 35 weight percent ammonia and in said formula x is 30 to 90 percent, y is 5 to 50 percent and z is 5 to 30 percent.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said temperature is in the range of 140.degree. to 160.degree. C.
- 5. A process for making a terpolymer of vinylamine, N-vinylformamide and amidine which comprises subjecting a homopolymer of N-vinylformamide to aqueous hydrolysis at a temperature in the range of 90.degree. to 175.degree. C. under neutral or mildly basic conditions which can include not over 50 weight percent ammonia or alkylamine as the sole hydrolysis agent.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said hydrolysis is carried out in the absence of any hydrolysis agent.
- 7. The process of claim 5 wherein said hydrolysis conditions include a temperature in the range of 100.degree. to 160.degree. C. and the presence of ammonia at a concentration of 0.5 to 35 weight percent.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein said hydrolysis conditions include a temperature in the range of 140.degree. to 160.degree. C.
