Claims
- 1. A process for forming a substantially circular coil of barbed tape, said process comprising the steps of:
- providing a coil of flat metal having first and second side edges;
- forming clusters of barbs at spaced apart locations along said strip of metal, each said cluster defining a pair of oppositely directed barbs along said first side of said strip and a pair of oppositely directed barbs along said second side of said strip;
- offsetting the barbs in each cluster relative to the plane of the strip intermediate said barbs;
- providing a roll forming apparatus with means for differentially controlling the pressure exerted by said apparatus at selected locations thereon;
- continuously moving the tape through said roll forming apparatus; and
- applying differential pressure to the respective first and second sides of said tape such that the first side of said tape receives a pressure a controlled amount greater than the pressure received by said second side of said tape, said differential pressure causing a controlled and substantially uniform reduction in thickness of the first side of said tape relative to the second side and thereby causing said tape to assume a substantially uniform circular coiled configuration with the plane of said tape being generally perpendicular to the axis of the coil.
- 2. A process as in claim 1 further comprising the steps of providing a barb offsetting apparatus for offsetting the barbs relative to the plane of said tape; moving said tape continuously relative to said barb offsetting and from said barb offsetting apparatus to said roll forming apparatus.
- 3. A process as in claim 2 further comprising the step of sensing the presence of said barbs prior to offsetting said barbs.
- 4. A process as in claim 2 wherein the step of offsetting said barbs is initiated a controlled amount of time after the step of sensing the presence of a cluster of barbs.
- 5. A process as in claim 1 wherein the step of offsetting said barbs is carried out by an array of barb offsetting dies, and wherein the process further comprises the step of moving said dies parallel to the direction of movement of the tape during the barb offsetting step.
- 6. A process as in claim 5 wherein the step of offsetting the barbs is carried out by a plurality of arrays of barb offsetting dies each of which is operative to move with the tape during the barb offsetting step, adjacent arrays of dies in said plurality of arrays being operative to offset adjacent clusters of barbs along said tape.
- 7. A process as in claim 1 further comprising the steps of:
- sensing the radius of curvature of the barbed tape moving from said roll forming apparatus;
- comparing the sensed radius of curvature to a specified radius of curvature; and
- adjusting the differential pressure exerted by said roll forming apparatus in response to differences between said sensed radius of curvature and said specified radius of curvature.
- 8. A process as in claim 7 further comprising the steps of:
- providing a storage cassette for the coil of barbed tape; and
- depositing the coil of barbed tape in said storage cassette such that the plane of the tape is substantially horizontal.
