Claims
- 1. A water-insoluble, thermoplastic, grafted particle of lignite, said lignite having at least 2 alkylaromatic molecules and at least one grafted sidechain such that each sidechain has at least one repeat unit, M', formed by polymerizing at least one hydrophobic ethene monomer, M, wherein the at least one ethene monomer has a dipole moment of less than 1.2 or a water solubility of less than 5 g/100 g water at 30.degree. C. and the at least one ethene monomer, M, is polymerized by free radical polymerization wherein the substituents on the monomer or monomers are hydrophobic.
- 2. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein the substituents are further substituted with one or more groups.
- 3. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein ' is represented by (M').sub.m with M' being (1-phenylethylene): ##STR14## and m varies from 1 to 300,000.
- 4. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein M' is represented by (M').sub.m with M' being a polymerized 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol: ##STR15## and m varies from 1 to 300,000, p varies from 0 to 300,000, and where the term (3*p+3) indicates the structural position number of the terminal hydroxyl group on the ethoxylated ester chain.
- 5. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein M' is represented by (M').sub.m with M' being 1-methyl-1-(1-oxo-2-oxypropyl)ethylene: ##STR16## and m varies from 1 to 300,000.
- 6. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein said substituted ethene polymerizable by free radical polymerization is selected from 1-chloroethene; 1,1-dichloroethene; 1,2-dichloroethene; 1,1,2-trichloroethene; 1-fluoroethene; 1,1-difluoroethene; 1,2-difluoroethene; 1,1,2-trifluoroethene; 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethene; 1-bromoethene; 1,1-dibromoethene; 1,2-dibromoethene; 1,1,2-tribromoethene; 1-phenylethene; 1-( n-halophenyl )ethene where n is 2, 3, or 4 and the halide substituent is fluorine, chlorine, or bromine; 1, n-diethenylbenzene, where n=2, 3, or 4; 1,3-butadiene; 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene; 1-methyl-1-phenylethene; 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene; 2-oxo-3-oxypent-4-ene; a 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol and p varies from 0 to 300,000; 2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; 4-methyl-2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; propene; or ethene.
- 7. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein M consists of first and second monomers, M.sub.1 and M.sub.2, and M.sub.1 has substituents selected from the group of alkanes, alkenes, alkoxides, aromatics, cycloalkanes, esters, and halogens and another ethene monomer, M.sub.2, is 1-phenylethene.
- 8. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 7, wherein M.sub.1 is selected from the group of 1-chloroethene; 1,1-dichloroethene; 1,2-dichloroethene; 1,1,2-trichloroethene; 1-fluoroethene; 1,1-difluoroethene; 1,2-difluoroethene; 1,1,2-trifluoroethene; 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethene; 1-bromoethene; 1,1-dibromoethene; 1,2-dibromoethene; 1,1,2-tribromoethene; 1-phenylethene; 1-(n-halophenyl)ethene where n is 2, 3, or 4 and the halide substituent is fluorine, chlorine, or bromine; 1,n-diethenylbenzene, where n=2, 3, or 4; 1,3-butadiene; 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene; 1-methyl-1-phenylethene; 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene; 2-oxo-3-oxypent-4-ene; a 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol and p varies from 0 to 300,000; 2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; 4-methyl-2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; propene; or ethene.
- 9. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein M consists of first and second monomers, M.sub.1 and M.sub.2, and M.sub.1 has substituents selected from the group of alkanes, alkenes, alkoxides, aromatics, cycloalkanes, esters, and halogens and another ethene monomer, M.sub.2, is a 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol such that p varies from 0 to 300,000.
- 10. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 9, wherein M.sub.1 is selected from the group of 1-chloroethene; 1,1-dichloroethene; 1,2-dichloroethene; 1,1,2-trichloroethene; 1-fluoroethene; 1,1-difluoroethene; 1,2-difluoroethene; 1,1,2-trifluoroethene; 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethene; 1-bromoethene; 1,1-dibromoethene; 1,2-dibromoethene; 1,1,2-tribromoethene; 1-phenylethene; 1-(n-halophenyl)ethene where n is 2, 3, or 4 and the halide substituent is fluorine, chlorine, or bromine; 1, n-diethenylbenzene, where n=2, 3, or 4; 1,3-butadiene; 3-methyl-1,3-butadiene; 1-methyl-1-phenylethene; 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene; 2-oxo-3-oxypent-4-ene; a 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy- (3*p+3)-ol and p varies from 0 to 300,000; 2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; 4-methyl-2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; propene; or ethene.
- 11. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1, wherein M consists of first and second monomers, M.sub.1 and M.sub.2, and M.sub.1 has substituents selected from the group of alkanes, alkenes, alkoxides, aromatics, cycloalkanes, esters, and halogens and another ethene monomer, M.sub.2, is a 1-methyl-1-(1-oxo-2-oxypropyl)ethylene.
- 12. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 11, wherein M.sub.1 is selected from the group of 1-chloroethene; 1,1-dichloroethene; 1,2-dichloroethene; 1,1,2-trichloroethene; 1-fluoroethene; 1,1-difluoroethene; 1,2-difluoroethene; 1,1,2-trifluoroethene; 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethene; 1-bromoethene; 1,1-dibromoethene; 1,2-dibromoethene; 1,1,2-tribromoethene; 1-phenylethene; 1-(n-halophenyl)ethene where n is 2, 3, or 4 and the halide substituent is fluorine, chlorine, or bromine; 1,n-diethenylbenzene, where n=2, 3, or 4; 1,3-butadiene; 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene; 1-methyl-1-phenylethene; 1-chloro-1,3-butadiene; 2-oxo-3-oxypent-4-ene; a 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol and p varies from 0 to 300,000; 2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; 4-methyl-2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; propene; or ethene.
- 13. A grafted particle of lignite according to claim 1 wherein lignite has between 2 and 1024.sup.24 alkylaromatic molecules, each molecule having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to 1,500,000, and a number of grafted sidechains, x, such that x is between 1 and 500 and each sidechain, -(M').sub.m -, has a least the repeat unit M', formed from the at least one ethene monomer, M, selected from the group of 1-chloroethene; 1,1-dichloroethene; 1,2-dichloroethene; 1,1,2-trichloroethene; 1-fluoroethene; 1,1-difluoroethene; 1,2-difluoroethene; 1,1,2-trifluoroethene; 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethene; 1-bromoethene; 1,1-dibromoethene; 1,2-dibromoethene; 1,1,2-tribromoethene; 1-phenylethene; 1-(n-halophenyl)ethene where n is 2, 3, or 4 and the halide substituent is fluorine, chlorine, or bromine; 1,n-diethenylbenzene, where n=2, 3, or 4; 1,3-butadiene; 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene; 1-methyl-1-phenylethene; 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene; 2-oxo-3-oxypent-4-ene; a 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol and p varies from 0 to 300,000; 2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; 4-methyl-2-oxy-3-oxopent-4-ene; propene; or ethene such that the total number of repeating units in a grafted sidechain, m, is in the range of 1 to 300,000 units.

This is a continuation-in-part application of co-pending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 07/787,264 filed on Nov. 1, 1991 and now abandoned which is a continuation-in-part of then co-pending application No. 07/479,839 filed on Feb. 14, 1990 and issued as U.S. Pat.
