Claims
- 1. A process for making a fiber consisting essentially of para-aramid and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) [PVP] comprising the steps of:
- (A) agitating an anisotropic mixture of:
- i) solvent acid;
- ii) para-aramid having an inherent viscosity of at least 4 in an amount which is at least 16 percent, by weight, of the mixture; and
- iii) PVP having a molecular weight of 10,000 to 360,000 [at least 1000] in an amount which is from 3 to 30 [at least 3] percent, by weight, of the para-aramid;
- (b) heating the mixture with continued agitation to a temperature above the melting point of the mixture to form a uniform solution;
- (c) extruding the solution through a spinneret;
- (d) drawing the extruded solution through a non-coagulating fluid layer 0.5 to 2.5 centimeter thick and stretching the extruded solution 3 to 10 times its original length in the non-coagulating layer;
- (e) passing the stretched solution into and through an aqueous coagulating bath having a temperature of -5.degree. to 25.degree. C. to form filaments; and
- (f) washing the filaments with water or dilute aqueous alkali.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the para-aramid is PPD-T.
