Claims
- 1. A process for manufacturing toluidine blue O (“TBO”), comprising the steps of:(a) oxidizing N,N′-dimethyl-ρ-phenylenediamine in a first reaction mixture; (b) intoducing a source of thiosulfate ions into said first reaction mixture, while maintaining the temperature of said first reaction mixture at a temperature not higher than about 10° C., to form a first intermediate, 2-amino-5-dimethylamino thiosulfonic acid; (c) further oxidizing and condensing said first intermediate with O-toluidine, to form a second intermediate, indamine thiosulfonic acid; (d) further oxidizing said second intermediate to close the indamine ring thereof, for form a TBO-containing reaction product in a third reaction mixture; (e) introducing a TBO-complexing agent into a reaction mixture before said third reaction mixture is formed; and (f) separating the TBO-containing reaction product from said third reaction mixture.
