Claims
- 1. A process for manufacturing a cam shaft constituted by a shaft member and at least one cam, the process comprising the steps of:
- forming on the outer periphery of said shaft member a copper plating layer;
- pressing metallic powder to form a plurality of cams;
- putting said plurality of cams one upon another with copper plates containing a release agent sandwiched between adjacent cams to form an assembly;
- heating said assembly in a furnace to sinter and harden the cams of said plurality of cams simultaneously and to impregnate said cams with copper;
- mounting at least one cam from among said plurality of cams on said shaft member in a desired position; and
- heating said at least one cam by a laser to melt the impregnated copper and said copper plating layer to join said at least one cam to said shaft member.
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mounting step comprises mounting a plurality of cams from among said plurality of cams, and said heating step comprises heating said plurality of cams by lasers.
- 3. A process as claimed in claim 1 in which said cam shaft is further constituted by a gear, and said process further comprising the steps of forming at least one gear by pressing metallic powder to form the gear and heating the thus formed gear for sintering and hardening said gear and at the same time impregnating it with copper, mounting said gear at a desired position on the cam shaft, and heating the gear with a laser to melt the impregnated copper and the copper plating on the cam shaft to join said gear to said shaft member.
