Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing a body of optical material having a gradient of refractive index across its thickness, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing at least four different optical materials, wherein each optical material has a density and a substantially uniform composition that is different from other of said optical materials;
- (b) providing at least four glass melter dispensers and one mold;
- (c) melting said different optical materials to form a set of molten optical materials, wherein each molten optical material is contained in and dispensed from a different said glass melter dispenser;
- (d) configuring said glass melter dispensers so that each can successively dispense into said mold a predetermined amount, by volume or by weight, of one of said molten optical materials, said glass melter dispensers being arranged so that molten optical materials having higher densities are dispensed first into said mold, followed by optical materials of lower densities, in order of decreasing density; and
- (e) successively dispensing, in order of decreasing density, measured amounts of said molten optical materials into a mold, such that all subsequent layers after dispensing a first layer are dispensed onto a molten surface of a previously-dispensed layer to create a series of layers of said molten optical materials in which the density of said molten optical materials decreases from the bottom toward the top of the mold.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the density of each optical material is different from that in an adjacent layer by at least 0.1 g/cc.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of glass melters is arranged above a conveyor which carries a plurality of said molds so that each mold is filled in succession with the plurality of optical materials.
- 4. A method of manufacturing a body of optical material having a gradient of refractive index across its thickness, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing at least four different optical materials, wherein each optical material has a density and a substantially uniform composition that is different from other of said optical materials;
- (b) melting said different optical materials to form a set of molten optical materials, wherein each molten optical material is contained in and dispensed from a different dispenser;
- (c) successively dispensing, in order of decreasing density, measured amounts of said molten optical materials into a mold, such that all subsequent layers after dispensing a first layer are dispensed onto a molten surface of a previously-dispensed layer, to create a stack comprising a series of layers of said molten optical materials in which the density of said molten optical materials decreases from the bottom toward the top of the mold; and
- (d) heating said stack at a temperature sufficient to fuse said layers together, by diffusion across their interfaces, to define a contiguous body of optical material having a gradient in its refractive index across its thickness.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein following step (d), said stack is cooled to define a solid, contiguous body of optical material.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the density of each optical material is different from that in an adjacent layer by at least 0.1 g/cc.
- 7. The method of claim 4 wherein at least four glass melter dispensers are configured so that each can successively dispense into the mold in step (c) a predetermined amount, by volume or by weight, of one of said molten optical materials, the melters being arranged so that the molten optical materials having higher densities are dispensed first into the mold, followed by optical materials of lower density, in order of decreasing density.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the glass melter dispensers is arranged above a conveyor which carries a plurality of said molds so that each mold is filled in succession with the plurality of optical materials.
