Claims
- 1. A press for manufacturing a random polyester copolymer comprising:

- contacting an alkyl diester of a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid with a second alkyl diol and a suitable transesterification catalyst under transesterification conditions to form a bis(hydroxyalkylnaphthalate) product and subsequently deactivating the transesterification catalyst;
- contacting the bis(hydroxyalkylnaphthalate) and a suitable polycondensation catalyst under polycondensation conditions to form a low molecular weight naphthalate-based polymer product, wherein the naphthalate-based polymer product has a degree of polymerization of from about 20 to about 100; and
- adding the naphthalate-based polymer product and a suitable polycondensation catalyst to the phthalate-based oligomer product under polycondensation conditions to form a random polyester copolymer product;
- wherein the random polyester copolymer contains a major proportion of phthalate-based units and a minor proportion of naphthalate-based units, based upon total moles of carboxylate units.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the first alkyl diol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol, and mixtures thereof, and the second alkyl diol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol, and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the first alkyl diol and the second alkyl diol are the same.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein the alkyl diester of naphthalene dicarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of alkyl diesters of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the first glycol and the second glycol are ethylene glycol.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the phthalic acid is selected from the group consisting of orthophthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein the alkyl diester of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid is dimethyl-2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylate.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the phthalic acid is terephthalic acid.
- 9. The process of claim 7 wherein the random polyester copolymer product contains from about 90 mole percent to about 98 mole percent phthalate-based units and from about 2 mole percent to about 10 mole percent naphthalate-based units, based upon total moles of carboxylate units.
- 10. The process of claim 7 wherein the naphthalate-based polymer product is converted to solid form prior to combination with the phthalate-based oligomer product.
- 11. A process for manufacturing a random polyethylene terephthalate/naphthalate copolymer comprising:
- contacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol under esterification conditions to form a polyethylene terephthalate oligomer product, wherein the polyethylene terephthalate oligomer product has a number average molecular weight of from about 300 to about 2000;
- contacting dimethyl-2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylate, ethylene glycol, and a suitable transesterification catalyst under transesterification conditions to form a bis(hydroxyethyl-2,6-naphthalate), and subsequently deactivating the transesterification catalyst;
- contacting the bis(hydroxyethyl-2,6-naphthalate) and a suitable polycondensation catalyst under polycondensation conditions to form a low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate polymer product, wherein the polyethylene naphthalate polymer product has a number average molecular weight of from about 4800 to about 24,200; and
- adding the low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate polymer product and a suitable polycondensation catalyst to the polyethylene terephthalate oligomer product under polycondensation conditions to form a random polyethylene terephthalate/naphthalate copolymer product;
- wherein the low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate polymer product is combined with the polyethylene terephthalate oligomer product in proportions that provide a random copolymer product which contains from about 90 percent to about 98 percent moles of terephthalate-based units and from about 10 percent to about 2 percent moles of naphthalate-based-units, based upon total moles of carboxylate units.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein the low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate polymer product is converted to solid form prior to addition to the polyethylene terephthalate oligomer product.
