Claims
- 1. A process for manufacturing a random polyethylene terephthalate/naphthalate copolymer comprising:
- contacting dimethyl-2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylate with ethylene glycol and a suitable transesterification catalyst under transesterification conditions to form a bis(hydroxyethyl-2,6-naphthalate) and subsequently deactivating the transesterification catalyst;
- contacting the bis(hydroxyethyl-2,6-naphthalate) and a suitable polycondensation catalyst under polycondensation conditions to form a low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate polymer product, wherein the polyethylene naphthalate has a number average molecular weight of from about 4800 to about 24,200;
- combining the low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate, terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, under esterification conditions to form a random polyethylene terephthalate/naphthalate copolymer;
- wherein the low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate, terephthalic acid, and ethylene glycol are combined in the presence of a preformed polyethylene terephthalate oligomer having a degree of polymerization of from about 1.4 to about 10; and
- wherein the random copolymer contains from about 95 mole percent to about 98 mole percent terephthalate-based units and from about 5 mole percent to about 2 mole percent of naphthalate-based units, based upon total moles of carboxylate units.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the low molecular weight polyethylene naphthalate is converted to solid form prior to combination with the terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
