Claims
- 1. A process for manufacturing a fiber, comprising fiber melt-spinning a polymer blend which comprises:
- (a) from about 70 to about 99.85% by weight of a polyamide;
- (b) from about 1 to about 5% by weight of a copolymer miscible with the polyamide derived from hexamethylenediamine, isophthalic acid (I), and terephthalic acid (T); and
- (c) from about 10 to about 25% by weight of an amorphous poly(phenylene oxide) polymer immiscible with the polyamide.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the amount of amorphous polymer (b) is about 2 wt. % or less.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the polyamide (a) is at least one nylon selected from the group consisting of nylon 6 and nylon 6,6.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein said isophthalic acid (I) and said terephthalic acid (T) are each present in an amount to provide a ratio (I):(T) of from 0.5:1 to 2:1.
- 5. The process of claim 1, wherein said poly(phenylene oxide) is modified by with an a,13-unsaturated compound.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein said .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compound is at least one selected from the group consisting of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated aliphatic mono-and dicarboxylic acids, .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated aliphatic mono-and dicarboxylic esters, .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated aliphatic mono-and dicarboxylic amides, .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated aliphatic mono-and dicarboxylic imides, and aromatic vinyl monomers.
- 7. The process of claim 1, comprising melting said polymer blend to form a polymer melt and extruding the polymer melt through a spinnerette to form a fiber.
- 8. The process of claim 7, further comprising drawing and texturing the fiber to form a bulk continuous fiber.
