Claims
- 1. A process for modifying the production of carotenoids in plants which comprises transforming said plants with a DNA construct that modifies carotenoid biosynthesis, growing said transformed plants or their descendants and selecting plants having modified carotenoid content, said construct comprising a DNA sequence encoding a plant enzyme which catalyzes the formation of phytoene from geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate, preceded by a transcriptional initiation region operative in plants so that the construct can generate mRNA in plant cells, said DNA sequence being one which hybridizes to the plant gene of pTOM5.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 in which the DNA sequence is encoded by the clone pTOM5.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 in which the production of lycopene is modified to produce plants having changed color.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 in which the plant naturally produces lycopene and the construct inhibits the production of lycopene.
- 5. A process according to claim 3 for producing or intensifying a red color in plants in which the construct promotes the production of lycopene.
- 6. A process according to claim 5 in which the construct can generate mRNA which is translated to give said enzyme.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 in which the production of .beta.-carotene is modified.
- 8. A process for modifying the production of carotenoids in plants which comprises transforming said plants with a DNA construct that modifies carotenoid biosynthesis, growing said transformed plants or their descendants and selecting plants having modified carotenoid content, said construct comprising a transcriptional initiation region operative in plants positioned for transcription of a DNA sequence encoding RNA complementary to mRNA encoding a plant enzyme which catalyzes the formation of phytoene from geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate, said DNA sequence being one which hybridizes to the plant gene of pTOM5.
- 9. A process according to claim 8 in which the DNA sequence encodes RNA complementary to mRNA encoding the enzyme produced by the gene of pTOM5.
- 10. A process according to claim 8 in which the production of lycopene is modified to produce plants having changed color.
- 11. A process according to claim 8 in which the production of .beta.-carotene is modified.
- 12. A DNA construct that modifies carotenoid biosynthesis in plants which comprises a DNA sequence encoding a plant enzyme which catalyzes the formation of phytoene from geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate, preceded by a transcriptional initiation region operative in plants so that the construct can generate mRNA in plant cells, said DNA sequence being one which hybridizes to the plant gene of pTOM5.
- 13. A plant containing a DNA construct according to claim 12, said plant having modified carotenoid synthesis due to the presence of said DNA construct.
- 14. A DNA construct that modifies carotenoid biosynthesis in plants which comprises a transcriptional initiation region operative in plants, positioned for transcription of a DNA sequence encoding RNA complementary to mRNA encoding a plant enzyme which catalyzes the formation of phytoene from geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate, said DNA sequence being one which hybridizes to the plant gene of pTOM5.
- 15. A plant containing a DNA construct according to claim 14, said plant having modified carotenoid synthesis due to the presence of said DNA construct.
