Claims
- 1. A process for obtaining lignan comprising:
(a) contacting a lignan containing plant material with an extraction solvent to obtain an extraction solution comprising a lignan containing extract and said extraction solvent; (b) separating plant material solids from said extraction solution; (c) reducing microbial component content in said extraction solution obtained in (b); (d) removing the extraction solvent from said extraction solution obtained in (c), while simultaneously adding an aqueous diluent to said extraction solution; wherein lignan is obtained therefrom.
- 2. The process of claim 1 further comprising adjusting the pH of the lignan to between about 3.0 to about 9.0 prior to drying said lignan.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said pH is between about 7.5 to about 8.0.
- 4. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said extraction solvent is an alcohol.
- 5. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said alcohol is selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol and isopropanol.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein said alcohol is ethanol.
- 7. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said separating step (b) comprises filtration or centrifugation.
- 8. The process according to claim 7, wherein after said separating step (b), plant material solids are further subjected to a screw press to obtain additional extraction solution therefrom.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein said separating step (b) comprises filtration.
- 10. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said extraction solvent is removed by evaporation.
- 11. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said aqueous diluent is water.
- 12. The process according to claim 1 or 2, further comprising removing sugars from the extraction solution obtained in (d).
- 13. The process according to claim 12, wherein said sugars are removed from the extraction solution obtained in (d) by ultrafiltration.
- 14. The process according to claim 13, wherein said ultrafiltration is conducted with a membrane filter having a pore size of 1,000-5,000 MWCO.
- 15. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein:
(i) the extraction solution obtained from step (c) is diluted with an aqueous diluent; and (ii) step (d) is replaced by the step of subjecting the extraction solution obtained from (i) to ultrafiltration.
- 16. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said obtained lignan is dried by evaporation or spray drying.
- 17. The process according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the lignan containing plant material is flax.
- 18. A process for obtaining lignan comprising:
(a) contacting a lignan containing plant material with an extraction solvent to obtain an extraction solution comprising a lignan containing extract and the extraction solvent; (b) separating plant material solids from said extraction solution; (c) reducing microbial component content in said extraction solution obtained from (b); (d) contacting the extraction solution obtained from (e) with an adsorptive resin; (e) washing the adsorbed lignan containing extract with an aqueous diluent; (f) eluting the lignan containing extract; thereby obtaining lignan.
- 19. The process of claim 18 further comprising,
(g) adjusting the pH of the released lignan containing extract prior to a drying step.
- 20. The process of claim 19, wherein the pH is between about 3.0 to about 9.0.
- 21. The process of claim 20, wherein the pH is between about 7.5 to about 8.0.
- 22. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein said extraction solvent is an alcohol.
- 23. The process according to claim 22, wherein said alcohol is selected from methanol, ethanol or isopropanol.
- 24. The process according to claim 23, wherein said alcohol is ethanol.
- 25. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein said separating step (b) comprises filtration or centrifugation.
- 26. The process according to claim 25, wherein after said separating step (b), plant material solids are further subjected to a screw press to obtain additional extraction solution therefrom.
- 27. The process according to claim 25, wherein said separating step (b) comprises filtration.
- 28. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein said adsorptive resin is a polymer or copolymer resin.
- 29. The process according to claim 28, wherein said adsorptive resin is selected from the group consisting of polymethacrylate, ethylvinylbenze-divinylbenzene, styrene-divinylbenzene, polystyrene and phenol formaldehyde.
- 30. The process according to claim 29, wherein said adsorptive resin is a polymethacrylate copolymer.
- 31. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein sugars are removed during elution of the adsorbed lignan containing extract with the aqueous diluent.
- 32. The process according to claim 31, wherein said aqueous diluent is water.
- 33. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein said adsorbed lignan containing extract is released by eluting the adsorptive resin with an aliphatic alcohol.
- 34. The process according to claim 33, wherein said alcohol is added at a concentration from about 20% to 100% by volume.
- 35. The process according to claim 34, wherein said alcohol is applied as a gradient or as a single percentage value.
- 36. The process according to claim 34, wherein said alcohol is added at a temperature of from about 25-85° C.
- 37. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein separation steps (d), (e) and (f) are carried out in a batch or continuous manner.
- 38. The process according to claim 18, wherein said adsorbed lignan containing extract, released in (f), is dried.
- 39. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein said released lignan containing extract is dried by evaporation or spray drying.
- 40. The process according to claim 39, wherein said dried lignan containing extract contains about 20-45% lignan by weight.
- 41. The process according to claim 1, wherein the removal of the extraction solvent and simultaneous addition of an aqueous diluent to the extraction solution results in a concentration of extraction solvent of less than 20% by weight.
- 42. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein after step (c) and before step (d) the extraction solution obtained from step (c) is diluted with an aqueous diluent.
- 43. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein after step (c) and before step (d) the extraction solvent present in the extraction solution obtained in step (c) is removed while simultaneously adding an aqueous diluent to said extraction solution.
- 44. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein after step (c) and before step (d) said process further comprises:
(i) diluting the extraction solution obtained from step (c) with an aqueous diluent; and (ii) removing the extraction solvent present in the extraction solution obtained in (i) while simultaneously adding an aqueous diluent to said extraction solution.
- 45. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein after step (c) and before step (d) the pH of the extraction solution is adjusted to between about 3.0 to about 9.0.
- 46. The process of claim 45, wherein said pH is between about 7.5 to about 8.0.
- 47. The process according to claim 18 or 19, wherein the lignan containing plant source is flax.
- 48. A composition comprising lignan obtained from the process according to claim 1.
- 49. A composition comprising lignan obtained from the process according to claim 18 or 19.
- 50. The composition according to claim 48, comprising a lignan content of at least 10% by weight.
- 51. The composition according to claim 49, comprising a lignan content of at least 10% by weight.
- 52. A method of treating colon cancer, breast cancer or prostate cancer, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 48.
- 53. A method of treating colon cancer, breast cancer or prostate cancer, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 49.
- 54. A method of treating Type I or Type II diabetes, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 48.
- 55. A method of treating hypertension, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 48.
- 56. A method of treating Lupus Nephritis, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 48.
- 57. A method of treating atherosclerosis, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 48.
- 58. A method of treating Type I or Type II diabetes, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 49.
- 59. A method of treating hypertension, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 49.
- 60. A method of treating Lupus Nephritis, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 49.
- 61. A method of treating atherosclerosis, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, the composition according to claim 49.
- 62. A formulation comprising the lignan obtained from the process according to claim 1, comprising:
(a) 15-45 wt. % of lignan; (b) 60-84 wt. % of a filler; (c) 1-25 wt. % of a supplemental nutrient.
- 63. A formulation comprising the lignan obtained from the process according to claim 18 or 19, comprising:
(a) 15-45 wt. % of lignan; (b) 60-84 wt. % of a filler; (c) 1-25 wt. % of a supplemental nutrient.
- 64. The process of claim 2, wherein said pH is between about 3.0 to about 5.0.
- 65. The process of claim 19, wherein said pH is between about 3.0 to about 5.0.
- 66. The process of claim 45, wherein said pH is between about 3.0 to about 5.0.
